To wonder what appliances save the most time?

I’m trying to get my house on track and am improving everyday (after a lifetime of not doing much if any housework).

I’ve been thinking two of the things that take the most bother are laundry and washing up. Those relentless things that never seem to be done.

I was thinking if I had a dryer laundry would take less time as I would not have clothes hanging around for ages? I only have so many radiators and seem to spend half my life rotating the clothes on the radiators so everything dries.

And secondly, I spend so much time doing washing up! Especially as I have a bottle fed baby. For those with a dishwasher, how much time does it actually save? Because you still have to load and unload and put away; does it actually make much of a difference.

Lastly, unrelated to these, I was thinking one of those automatic hoover robot things. Everything seems tidier when the floor is clean! Do they only work on carpet though? We have lino stuff in the kitchen.

I’ve already got a Crockpot and am hoping that this will help reduce time spent making meals.

Basically I want a clean home and home-cooked meals with the least effort! I’m doing other things (KonMari-ing and trying to work out a routine for tidying) but trying to work out every way that will help me!

So aibu to ask for your best labour saving devices???

Get a dishwasher, they save masses of time. You still need to put everything away after washing up. Unloading doesn’t take more time than that. It also keeps the kitchen tidy because all the dirty dishes go straight in it.

nokidshere · 08/04/2018 10:33

Definitely the tumble dryer. No wet clothes hanging about and no ironing needed.

PeanutButterSquash · 08/04/2018 10:35

Robotic hoover (mine does my wood floors ok but is better on carpet).
Dishwasher
Dryer
In that order. Grin
I barely vacuum anymore, only once or twice a month. Mop the hard floors once a week. I stack the dishwasher throughout the day, turn on before I go to bed, wake up, unload and repeat.
Its life changing Grin Blush

We got a new kitchen and I purposefully made the dish drawer directly opposite the dishwasher, so I don't have to move when unloading. Just move my body left and right lol.

Iseesheep · 08/04/2018 10:38

Dishwasher and tumble dryer definitely time saving. I have a vileda automatic duster thingy for all the wooden floors. Love it!

himalayansalt · 08/04/2018 10:39

I would start with a dishwasher. Can you get a clothes horse so that you don't have to put clothes directly on radiators? I have a tumble drier but barely use it, it literally only goes on if it has been raining for weeks or there's no heating on in the house.

notsohippychick · 08/04/2018 10:41

Dishwasher and tumble dryer are a godsend for me. We invested in a Miele dryer and it’s brilliant!!

MsGameandWatching · 08/04/2018 10:43

Dish washer
Tumble dryer
The absolute best hoover you can afford.

Everything got easier once I got those.

HisBetterHalf · 08/04/2018 10:44

Couldnt manage without a dryer. Hate clothes on radiattors or waiting for decent weather to put clothes on line

Rikalaily · 08/04/2018 10:45

I think a dishwasher depends on how many people are in the house and what your washing up routine is. If there are 3 or less people and you wash up right after eating then it's probably not worth it, but if you leave all dishes until the end of the day or more people than that, then it definately is worth it. We have 7 in the house (soon to be 8) and I refuse to not have a dishwasher, ours broke and I bought another one straight away, the few days waiting for it were awful.

Same with a dryer, if there's only a few people then not worth the expense usually. I managed mostly without using ours until there were 6 of us (I used a huge clothes horse on the landing), now I use it every day apart from the summer months, I have two washing lines so use them whenever I can.

I would love a robot hoover but it wouldn't be able to cope with the amount of pet hair, even hoovering daily. We have a large dog who sheds ALOT and three cats, it's disgusting how much hair the vac has in it every day, I can't believe our pets arn't bald with the amount they shed.

Adversecamber22 · 08/04/2018 10:46

Dishwasher first.

As well as actually doing the dishes you can put them in the dishwasher throughout the day so you don't have to have dirty stuff on the counter.

scaredofthecity · 08/04/2018 10:49

Getting a dishwasher literally changed my life Grin
I went from feeling like I was spending my evenings washing up after DS was in bed to being able to have a bit of time to myself.... amazing!

happytobemrsg · 08/04/2018 10:49

My dishwasher has literally changed my life

happytobemrsg · 08/04/2018 10:50

Haha cross post scaredofthecity

PurpleDaisies · 08/04/2018 10:52

There’s only two of us in our household. Dishwasher still saves masses of time and effort.

thecatsthecats · 08/04/2018 10:52

People at work look at me like I'm eating gold frosties for breakfast when I say I use the tumble dryer every time, but I would just, JUST put it ahead of the dishwasher.

I don't like the look of drying clothes everywhere.
Because I'm busy and short on time, I'd either a) not do laundry because I couldn't face the hanging out or b) leave it lying around longer.

Getting a tumble dryer turned me from a person with 2.5 permanently overflowing laundry baskets to one with one about half empty most of the time.

When the dishwasher broke and the landlord didn't fix it for 3 months, it was just a bit annoying.

LauraLorelei · 08/04/2018 10:52

Can I ask everyone who uses a tumble dryer if you put everything in regardless of what it says on the label or if you shop carefully to make sure you buy only tumble dryerable clothes?

I hate having clothes horses around but when I got a tumble dryer I realised I could only dry about a third of our stuff like that and I still need three clothes horses!

SarahSiddons · 08/04/2018 10:53

Yes dishwasher. Ours broke and it emphasised to me how long it takes to do all the washing up by hand. If you’re bottle feeding be aware that most dishwashers don’t clean hot enough to replace sterilising.

We have a tumble dryer but don’t use it much. If you’ve got space for a drying rack that would be better than radiators.

FancyNewBeesly · 08/04/2018 11:00

Dishwasher absolutely - bottle fed twins here and it’s been a life saver.

We have a washer dryer but the dryer is shit, takes forever and ruins clothes so I still hang everything up unless it’s urgent.

Really want a cordless vacuum again - had a crappy one but it was so handy.

SnookieSnooks · 08/04/2018 11:03

Dishwasher, robot vacuuum.

We don’t have a tumble dryer. We dry most washing for the majority of the year outside - although we have invested in a washing machine with the highest possible rev spin cycle.

Soph88 · 08/04/2018 11:03

I love my dishwasher wouldn't be without one. It was broken for a few days a couple of weeks ago and it was horrible having to do the washing up.
I'm not keen on tumblr dryers they cost a lot electricity wise and it'll be summer soon so will be able to hang clothes outside anyway.

SnookieSnooks · 08/04/2018 11:04

Oh and well-trained teenage DCs!Smile

Soph88 · 08/04/2018 11:04

If you can afford it and want to be really lazy, we have a cleaner every other week. I haven't hoovered or mopped in years!

Elendon · 08/04/2018 11:20

I need a tumble dryer, but would rather not use it much. For emergencies only.

But my dishwasher is an absolute, like the washing machine. It's part of my life now. I do have to load it though in a special way that enables me to swiftly empty it.

I went without a dishwasher for three months after moving. I hate, HATE, washing up.

DelphiniumBlue · 08/04/2018 11:27

Dishwasher, then tumble dryer.
Although we have a washer/ dryer as short on space, and I only use the dryer for socks and sheets. It only has 2 dryer settings, and I worry about shrinkage and electricity waste. I try to be aware of ecological issues, but really hate pegging out socks ( which would be 70 socks a week).
