To wonder what appliances save the most time?

I’m trying to get my house on track and am improving everyday (after a lifetime of not doing much if any housework).

I’ve been thinking two of the things that take the most bother are laundry and washing up. Those relentless things that never seem to be done.

I was thinking if I had a dryer laundry would take less time as I would not have clothes hanging around for ages? I only have so many radiators and seem to spend half my life rotating the clothes on the radiators so everything dries.

And secondly, I spend so much time doing washing up! Especially as I have a bottle fed baby. For those with a dishwasher, how much time does it actually save? Because you still have to load and unload and put away; does it actually make much of a difference.

Lastly, unrelated to these, I was thinking one of those automatic hoover robot things. Everything seems tidier when the floor is clean! Do they only work on carpet though? We have lino stuff in the kitchen.

I’ve already got a Crockpot and am hoping that this will help reduce time spent making meals.

Basically I want a clean home and home-cooked meals with the least effort! I’m doing other things (KonMari-ing and trying to work out a routine for tidying) but trying to work out every way that will help me!

So aibu to ask for your best labour saving devices???

I have both (and very fortunate to always have) I would never, EVER not have one.

In my adult life, there has only been a 3month period of not having a dishwasher due to house move, it was hell, I hated it, I wanted to cry..

NEVER again. They save masses of time, and as mentioned, you can out stuff in throughout the day and makes the kitchen heaps tidier.

Dishwasher absolutely top of the list.

Like a pp I have cutlery drawer and crockery all within a foot or so of the d/w, and that means I can honestly unpack the dishwasher in about 3 minutes although I am very noisy crashing everything around and throwing it in drawers and cupboards! You can never get anything as clean washing up by hand.

I have a tumble dryer but rarely use it, don't really agree with having it as something to use when the sun is shining or the radiators are on. A waste of electricity. However.... I do have a big walk in airing cupboard so I just hang everything in there and it dries overnight. The tumble dryer is when the heating isn't on, it's pouring with rain and I need something dried quickly.

I despise our dishwasher so it only get used if we run out of washing up liquid or we’ve made a big meal for family.

Couldn’t live without the tumble drier though!

WeAllHaveWings · 08/04/2018 15:40

I only use my tumbler dryer for our towels, dogs towels, bedding and ds's school shirts (wash and dry on easy iron settings and I don't need to iron them). I don't use for our clothes as it ruins them, but did for the basic vests, bibs etc when ds was a baby as they are cheap and don't get used for long anyway.

So tumbler dryer is a must for towels and being. Dishwasher also a must as it keeps the kitchen tidy and is easy to just unload. I'm insanely jealous of people who have two dishwashers.

Automatic hoover I'd say is a luxury after the other two (and I say that as constantly shedding labrador owner!!)

Robot vacuum would be top of my list. I’ve one and I’d replace it in an instant if it broke.

Yes it may take longer but it does all the work, all you have to do is press a button then put your feet up.

Dishwasher still needs filling and reloading so not really any time saving IME but I’d rather have one than not, just to hide the dirty stuff away.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 08/04/2018 16:27

Dishwasher.
Tumble dryer and Lakeland heated airer for the stuff that can't be tumble dried.
It's not an appliance, but switching to grocery deliveries has saved a heck of a lot of time and faff.
I also have an automatic garden watering system. Saves me hours and my plants all survive the summer.

PerditaNitt · 08/04/2018 16:28

Dishwasher is worth it if you can situate it in the right place; I have mine next to the sink and the cupboard where all the dishes go, so that it is really easy to load and unload. I previously lived somewhere where the dishwasher wasn’t so well located and it was hardly used.

Love my tumble dryer for towels, sheets, shirts, etc but still hang up some things. It does keep the house looking cleaner to not constantly have my washing out. I have a clothes horse which I put up right next to a tall radiator so the clothes which can’t go in the tumble dryer, dry relatively quickly.

Cordless vacuum is well worth my money. Having one means I hoover the main living areas once a day and it takes 5 minutes max. I do a thorough hoover once a week, but by topping up the main areas, my house always looks presentable.

I’d rather give up my dishwasher than my tumble drier, without a doubt.

witherwings · 08/04/2018 16:39

Without doubt a dishwasher is the best thing ever. I didn’t have one when kids were small and felt like washing up was never ending. I’ve now had one for 3 years and still love it.

Floralnomad · 08/04/2018 16:41

The tumble dryer is the one item that I would insist on a replacement the day it broke . The dishwasher does save a heap of time as does the halogen oven . I have also found that since I’ve been cooking more in recent months that I’m using my microwave a lot more especially for making sauces , so much easier and a lot less mess than using the hob . We have cordless vacuums upstairs and downstairs which saves time .

InterstellarSleepingElla · 08/04/2018 17:35

I have a dryer and could not be without it - we have a small house and I hate when I have wet clothes hanging about. Also, I don't currently have a dishwasher (used to) and i miss it - my husband does nearly all the washing up but he spends so much time at the sink!

bananafish81 · 08/04/2018 18:17

I would marry our tumble dryer

Would give up the dishwasher before giving up a dryer

AwkwardPaws27 · 08/04/2018 18:40

I've had a dishwasher since July, I love it. There's only me and DP at the moment, but we use it regularly - everything goes straight in as its used, so no cluttered sides by the sink. I put it on in the evening after we finish dinner, and unload it in the morning while the kettle is boiling/ waiting for toaster. I don't feel like I spend time loading or unloading it IYSWIM, as we put it straight in and I unload in otherwise "dead" time.
I'm thinking about a tumble-dryer in future, but there is no room in the kitchen at present so will have to wait until we move the bathroom upstairs. I'd definitely use it for sheets, towels etc but worry about shrinking clothes...

Onlyjoinedforthisthread · 08/04/2018 20:06

Got rid of our dishwasher, waste of space and didn't save much if any time, we have never missed it or wished we still had it

Lovelyusername · 08/04/2018 20:09

Robot hoovers are the best! Our Roomba has been going strong for years now, multiple times a day. Def get one.

Also laundry- we have Shelia maid at the top of the house and this drys the clothes quick plus you don’t have to look at them. Have a google.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 12/04/2018 11:03

Several years ago I bought a Lakeland heated airer for dds who were in a house with no space for a tumble drier and nowhere to dry anything in winter.
It would dry even jeans overnight. Several, years on and dd1 is in her own house with 2 very little ones, and still uses it all the time - it uses less electricity than a tumble drier. It doesn't save ironing but then she never irons anything anyway.
She'd never be without her dishwasher either, though.

Ofthread · 12/04/2018 11:20

I think you can get a robot mop thing too. My plan one day is to have a robot hoover set up and when it finishes the mop comes out.
