Razor left on side of the bath

My dp has just had a massive go at me for leaving a razor (with its cover on) on the side of the bath. Because his dd may pick it up. She’s 10! I feel this is a bit OTT. She’s not a bloody toddler! AIBU?

...or move them himself

Google '10 year old girl' and look at the pics that come up.

These girls should NOT be shaving!

I don't need to google to know what ten year old girls look like. Confused I actually was one, and guess what? I had fellow ten year old girls as friends. Some of us went into puberty later than ten, and some were fortunate enough to develop blonde leg hair. The remainder though started shaving or waxing. If we'd had the internet, they would not have posted pictures of themselves with visible legs without shaving first. I suspect the same goes for today's ten year olds. You won't get many stock images of tween girls with visible body hair- it really, really doesn't mean they don't grow it.

Scabetty · 08/04/2018 14:34

Dd used to swim with a county squad and the differences in body development was vast.

I am blessed with olive skin, thick hair and have no wrinkles yet. The downsides are spots and thick hair on my arms, legs, lip, pits, even my nipples ffs. I was shaving at 10 and that was over 30 years ago. It isn't a new thing.

10 years old! YDNBU. I think I was shaving my own legs by then (very dark haired!). If she's not safe around a razor with a cover on within arms reach at age 10 then you have way bigger worries.

BoristheBat · 08/04/2018 15:09

YANBU - it had the cover on, she knows what it is, not to touch it, unless she has MH issues I can't see the cause for concern.

Even with MH issues, maybe it was naivety, but I didn't realise till my 20's what the plastic guard was covering.

10 year olds shouldn't be shaving??!

Surely that's up to the 10 year old in question and what they feel comfortable with?

At primary school there were a mix of girls who were and weren't shaving, some that weren't had no hair any way. I didn't shave, however on starting secondary school I was publicly ridiculed for my hairy legs by a group of boys 3 years older. So yes, from that day forward I started shaving. And not just 'playing with dad's razor' it was like a military operation to be sure I had got every last hair.

Peer pressure is a bastard and kids are mean.

PasstheStarmix · 09/04/2018 09:25

I feel sorry for 10 year olds whose parents don’t let them shave. I remember a girl i in my school who used to get bullied and became an outcast because her parents sent her to school in a skirt with prominent dark hairy legs

MrsJackHackett · 13/04/2018 02:06

I totally agree maybe now at 10 girls need to shave. It wasn't a thing when I was young, but I am ancient.

I remember being on a bouncy castle at maybe 14, with a girl a year older who had impressive under arm hair growth, I did use the rubbishy razors back then to deal with that. I asked why didn't she shave, she said her Mum said she didn't need too. Which I guess is true.

It's just by that time at school lots of girls were shaving, I remember one girl at 15/16 dry shaving before gym in a panic. Ouch.

Graphista · 13/04/2018 02:24

Oh please don't start the "only children are spoiled" crap!

Ridiculous that she's being so infantilised and I do actually think that's abusive. It's stunting her emotional growth and development.

You say you could write pages and menstruation already been mentioned, I'll bet they've not talked to her about any of that either have they?

Really not surprised you're extracting yourself but it's a shame for her.

My dd started shaving at 11 when she started getting armpit hair. I'm almost 46 and fair and was shaving from around 11/12

TheOriginalEmu · 13/04/2018 03:03

my eldest dd was having periods, was wearing a D cup bra and had more armpit hair than I do at 10. my second dd is 10 and has no visible body hair, and not a hint of puberty. It's almost as if not every 10 year old is the same......shocking i know!

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 13/04/2018 06:41

At 10 she's old enough to need one herself!

LizzyBennett · 13/04/2018 07:01

I'm surprised that the school haven't said anything about it.

I babied DC1 (unintentionally) and at the first parents' evening I attended I was told that their scissor grip was poor. Teacher asked me how often did he use the scissors at home and I told her that I did the cutting when we did crafty stuff & I was told, in a nice way, to get a grip and let go a bit Blush

DC1 was 4 at the time, not 10!

TitaniasCloset · 13/04/2018 22:32

I now want to read your other threads op. No yanbu, he is. I feel sorry for this child. Food cut up at 10? Doesn't bode well.

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 13/04/2018 23:09

Kinnell, I was shaving my legs when I was nine thanks to the genetic inheritance of thick black hairs and early puberty. With Bic razors, soap & a shaving brush (remember those?).

Mammyloveswine · 13/04/2018 23:42

Erm its quite hard to cause much damage with a safety razor (aside from a nasty nic). I keep my razor out of the way of my two year old but wouldn't think twice about any sort of child-proofing with a ten year old tbh!
