Helmet for 10month old

GloveandSpecialsauce · 11/05/2007 09:26

Ok. My dd is determined to stand and tries to hold herself into anything. She sometimes misses and bangs her head on the floor (oak floor).

DH wants to buy a helmet. He is very serious about it. I think it is a bit extreme and utterly OTT.

Any thougts?

I'm sure he is a loving, caring father.

But he's still barking.

Babies don't need this level of wrapping in cotton wool. They need to be able to find things out (including the fact that banging your head hurts) without being restricted by over-cautious daddies.

Dh was a bit like that when we first had dd; he always likes to think that he's fixing things and finding solutions to problems - but sometimes things don't need fixing, and sometimes there really isn't a problem at all.

Awwwwww, sweet! Well, it is... Completely and totally OTT mind you - DS learned how to walk on laminate and he can now take a tumble like a pro!

MrMariella · 11/05/2007 19:41

laminate - bet you polished it and smeared it with oils. "It's character-building!"

lyrabelacqua · 11/05/2007 19:50

Actually i don't think he's mad. My DP also wanted to do this when ds1 was learning to walk (he was only 9 months so very wobbly). he went through a phase of about 2 weeks where he was constantly falling over and cracking his head on our hard wooden floors and not learning from it so we made a little crash hat for him out of a sun hat with some little packets of tissues taped around the outside.
it might sound mad but it saved a lot of tears when he was going through this particularly wobbly phase. Once he was a bit steadier we ditched the hat.

"we made a little crash hat for him out of a sun hat with some little packets of tissues taped around the outside. "

ROFL!

Snort!

lyrabelacqua · 11/05/2007 19:54

It was cute!!!
(he never wore it outside though).

GloveandSpecialsauce · 11/05/2007 19:59

lyra,
hubby is reading your post and grateful for your experience. He realises he's OTT but likes the padded hat compromise.

Thanks to everyone!

They sell these helmets in all the baby shops in France, have often just looked at them and thought What! Why on earth would anyone want one of these for their babies.

CorrieDale · 11/05/2007 20:04

Do you have any photos????? Please say you do! And post them!

Chirpygirl · 11/05/2007 20:10

He's being OTT, it's aleanring curve

BTW, they have ears!

GloveandSpecialsauce · 11/05/2007 20:34

That Thudguard seems a bit unnecessary imo. Our little crash helmet was just a very short-term solution, he certainly wasn't wearing it when he was 2+.

noonar · 11/05/2007 20:37

cylon, HE'S the one who needs to be put in a padded room, lol!

NappiesGalore · 11/05/2007 21:04

id be right there with all the 'hes barking' crowd - if it werent for ds3 and the amazing number of times he bangs his head! he also started walking pretty early (10m) and his head and face were so covered in bruises and scratches and lumps and bumps for a while... he even fell down a couple of stairs and gave it an audible whack once... and rather than risk taking him to A&E and have him put on the atrisk register, i kept him at home and 'observed' him closely. now, im pretty sure i wasnt risking his life... but i would have probably taken him in if he hadnt looked like such a battered waif!!

having said all that, i still didnt buy him a helmet!

lyrabelacqua · 11/05/2007 21:09

Have found pics of DS1 in crash helmet!
I'll add them to my profile when I've scanned them.

lyrabelacqua · 11/05/2007 21:43

Can't get pics thing to work.

NappiesGalore · 11/05/2007 21:58

oh do persevere...

CantSleepWontSleep · 11/05/2007 22:18

This company also make a type of helmet, which doesn't look quite as ridiculous as the one mentioned earlier (although we did still laugh when we saw them at the babyshow). Unfortunately their site is still under construction, but I'm sure that if your dh e-mailed them then they would send you a picture.

I do agree that it's totally ott though.

lyrabelacqua · 11/05/2007 22:25

Pics now on my profile.

feetheart · 11/05/2007 22:30

Nappiesgalore - IKWYM DS walked at 10 mths and bounced around the house like a pinball for about a month - no sense, no fear! Friends would count the bruises on this forehead

gess · 11/05/2007 22:36

one cute baby lyra- but pmsl at that hat!

NappiesGalore · 11/05/2007 22:41

lyrabelacqua · 11/05/2007 22:50
