Dog owners allowing their dog to approach mine while mine is on the lead.

When my dog was a pup, she was attacked by a dog off lead. She is now extremely anxious and we are working on this with a behaviourist. She is much better now but I still prefer to keep our distance at the moment.

I try to walk her during quieter times and always keep her on the lead but I am so fed up of dogs bounding up to us with the owner calling “it’s ok they are fine” while half attempting to call their dog back. I usually tell them that my dog is not ok with dogs and often the owner will apologise and/or call their dog back.

My AIBU is from today. A man let his dog run up to mine. I just called “my dog is not good with other dogs” and he started shouting at me saying “well you should bloody muzzle it then”. He didn’t even attempt to call his dog back.

My dog has never been aggressive to another dog and as far as I am concerned I have my dog under control.

AIBU to think that you should not let your dog approach random dogs even if they are fine?

My mum has a deaf dog who is on lead all the time. The vet suggested a ultrasonic deterrent device to use on other dogs that run up to her and her dog This was after her dog was bitten by another dog.

It definitely works. The dog it's pointed at always runs away. I'm just not sure how I feel about it though. If other owners actually cared for their dogs and trained them it would not be necessary.

YANBU!
My two are retired greyhounds and they are somewhat prone to chasing small furry things, given their training, so if something small and furry darts towards them they like to follow, they do like to play and are very friendly once they realise the dog isn't something to chase but the initial running up always makes me very edgy! It doesn't matter if their dog is friendly or not, it would make life easier if it didn't happen. Butter I always keep them on lead because I can't trust them to not to chase a rabbit/squirrel/deer/cat/fox. They lose all sense of danger when they chase as their prey drive is too high, so if you think it's kinder just to allow them to break their hips falling into a ditch or for them to kill someone's pet or a wild animal, then fair enough, but I don't. It's not cruel or awful of me to not let them off, believe me when I say their life with me is much preferable to a life in kennels.

I get you op. I think people can be quite arrogant assuming your dog is going to be ok. My dog is the same. Gets quite anxious sometimes.
Some dogs have had a difficult backgrounds, in which case they won't be sociable like dogs who have been trained from puppies. People need to be more aware.
