Some are stabbing each other. Some are killing themselves. Some can’t escape social media bullying. The nihilism, hopelessness, anger and hate is rising. Its like many of them see no real future. It feels like we’re entering a dystopian age. It scares me. Our country is sick and the youth are displaying the most painful symptoms.

I agree a little self-criticism and self-improvement. Unfortunately my experience in the church growing up was a whole lot of ‘mea culpa’, self-chastising and shaming people for any failings rather than positive and constructive reactions, and this is not an unusual experience for people in Christianity. I believe all religions have pitfalls and for me, Marcus Aurelius’ teachings have a lot of the same ideas of striving to be better without some of the overtones that I found unhelpful in Christianity, for example. But most importantly of course I stopped believing in God, which meant it was then illogical for me to follow the religion. I think stringent moral philosophy can help guide ethical behaviour, and is more feasible than reconverting everyone to religion. However of course if I believed in god I would probably feel that proselytism was the way to go.
