Who have had a hip replacement.

It just seems a bit - I know most on the NHS don’t get chemo over 80 and my dad had to fight a bit for a joint replacement at 82.

I don’t mean to sound mean but I dunno maybe IABU as he probably fucked his hip on all those walkabouts - and obvs a fraction of the wedding.

I am not anti Royal I just was a bit perplexed.

My dad is 96 and has dementia, I doubt they would operate on him as the anaesthetic would make him worse. He doesn't use a stick and doesn't have a stair lift and his hips are fine. Age is but a number.
I doubt Prince Philip has dementia though!

frasier · 05/04/2018 21:33

Those that don’t think it was a hip replacement, what do you think it was?

stoneagemum · 05/04/2018 21:34

The Queen Mother, ok she was 95 not 96 but close enough

UpOver · 05/04/2018 21:34

My friends Mum is 95 and is getting a hip replacement soon. Apart from her hip she is very fit. Her hip causes her pain and as she might be alive a good few more years then it seems reasonable to have those years pain free.

YourWanMajella · 05/04/2018 21:36

If he didn’t have it done on the NHS then who paid for it smile

He paid for it. You do understand that they are independently wealthy outside of any taxpayer support?

PerfectlyDone · 05/04/2018 21:36

Was it not announces/confirmed that he did indeed have a hip replacement? Confused

Ted27 · 05/04/2018 21:36

I would imagine he claimed on his BUPA plan

MrsMaxwell · 05/04/2018 21:38

He paid for it. You do understand that they are independently wealthy outside of any taxpayer support

He was penniless when he married the Queen.

Not that I do not think he has earnt his dues.

Toodlepip14 · 05/04/2018 21:40

@MrsMaxwell ok the Queen paid for it then...

Shinycantle · 05/04/2018 21:40

I'm quite cheered by this thread reading about 90+ year olds having hip ops on the NHS!

YourWanMajella · 05/04/2018 21:41

He was penniless when he married the Queen

And she was very rich. Married couples share money? so he is independently wealthy.

Toodlepip14 · 05/04/2018 21:42

Not that I do not think he has earnt his dues

So everybody who marries somebody wealthier than them should keep themselves separate from their spouses money? If I didn't work, should my husband not pay for my private healthcare if he could afford to?

LarkDescending · 05/04/2018 21:42

My stepfather is 95 and has had both hips replaced in the last 3 years or so, in separate operations.

tarheelbaby · 05/04/2018 21:43
  • yes, it takes some mighty big britches (breeches/cojones) to be the duke's surgeon.
  • anesthesiologist consultant friend was debating with FB friends how best to get the job done. they reckoned spinal but that wouldn't slow his gob and they didn't fancy a running commentary.
-DH's grandma had keyhole hysterectomy in late 80s and lived to 96.
diddl · 05/04/2018 21:44

Was HM rich when they married?

hatgirl · 05/04/2018 21:45

Lots and lots of people in their 90s have elective hip replacements on the NHS if they meet the appropriate criteria. Don't worry he isn't getting unfair/special treatment

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 05/04/2018 21:45

Chronological age isn’t guaranteed outcome measure
He keeps good health, good nutrition, numerous protective factors so in fact A good prognosis

MrsMaxwell · 05/04/2018 21:46

The Queen Mother left large debts which the Queen struggled to pay.

I do not think they are independently wealthy - how does that work?

Live off the tax payer but independently wealthy.

That wasn’t the point of my thread anyway and am also heartened to see all the over 90s getting joints on the NHS Grin

OP posts:
BusyBeez99 · 05/04/2018 21:47

He's paid for it himself. What's your problem OP?

BusyBeez99 · 05/04/2018 21:49

OP this is one of those occasions when if you can't say anything nice then don't say anything at all.

However I shall stoop low like you and ask why don't you try and fry those massive chips on your shoulder!

Bluelady · 05/04/2018 21:50

My dad fell and broke his hip when he was 99. They repaired it. They don't do it with a general anaesthetic, it's done under sedation with an epidural. I suspect the DoE fell and broke his hip, I don't imagine for a moment it was elective.

Saracen · 05/04/2018 21:50

I'm a complete nonspecialist, but I once happened to attend a conference on the outcomes of hip replacements. I was interested to learn that a joint replacement is a better bet for an older person than a younger one. There is less wear and tear on it, and therefore a good chance that it will last them for many years. A younger person tends to go haring about and will need a repeat op sooner.

YourWanMajella · 05/04/2018 21:51

Was HM rich when they married?

Yes, of course. She has a private investment portfolio and personally owns Sandringham and Balmoral. She inherited a lot of money from her father.

Nobody imagines that the taxpayer is actually paying for the Royals. do they? You do understand that they are net contributers to the public purse due to the crown estates and the duchies and that the Sovereign Grant Act 2011 removed even the relatively small parliamentary annuities from almost everyone?

mishfish · 05/04/2018 21:51

Poor surgeon and anaesthetist must have had quite sweaty brows
