To hope / expect for a contribution towards damaged items...?

I look after a friends dog, probably for a total of about 3-5 weeks a year with the off few days here and there and the occasional week if my friend goes on holiday.

He's a lovely dog, but she warned me that he can be destructive. The first times we had him we were very careful about leaving things he might chew lying around (eg shoes) but he has been fine. We have been having him stay for close on two years now and there have never been any incidents so we gradually became more laid back about leaving things out.

However... I came back in last week (we had him for 10 days) and the bugger had eaten my slipper and chewed a hole in my dogs bed. I was both shocked and pissed off as he has never shown any inkling to be like this since we have been having him, and it's not like it's a recent arrangement. The dog bed was reasonably old and worn but my slippers were £79 and about a year old (I try and buy things to last me as long as possible, and generally they do!)

My friend isn't unreasonable or thoughtless so hopefully this is all hypothetical but would you think it reasonable of me to want to have some kind of contribution towards getting some replacement slippers at the very least...? I know she warned me about the chewing but it's surely understandable that this appeared less of a risk the more he stayed with no issues - or is it my fault for not continuing to hide things away?

I still wondering why nobody can see the picture of my crap Mahabis.Confused

I honestly have no idea where I went wrong with mine, I just wear them round the house and they are all threadworn and holey on the side.

Juells · 05/04/2018 20:55

I saw it, nae bother.

penguinsandpanda · 05/04/2018 20:56

I saw it too but if you have a puppy and a monkey in the house what did you expect. 😉

Scaramoose · 05/04/2018 20:57

Puppy I’m looking now...

Yay Grin

Scaramoose · 05/04/2018 21:01

Puppy I see what you mean! They look threadbare. I wore mine all the time, working from home as well as the other factors I mentioned, plus I washed them multiple times (without soles) in the machine and they were fine. Weird that yours are not!
I think that the more you pay, the better something should be (within reason) but that clearly hasn’t happened with your experience

I wouldn’t ask her for the money, but I might say that you cannot afford to keep having the dog as you can’t afford to replace what he destroys.

Those slippers aren’t worth it though TBF, DH had some and the soft part disintegrated within weeks. It’s a good idea, poorly executed.

These are the slippers you need Bobs

Did someone mention Elton Johns slippers.

I'm no expert but i think these would be more than £80 Grin

For all those looking to buy these £80 slippers I think you should check out the amazon reviews first. Lets just say its not good!

AlphaApple · 05/04/2018 21:18

Lovely slippers.

I have Nordikas which are £55 but I fucking love them.

hibbledibble · 05/04/2018 21:19

Op I don't think it would be unreasonable to ask for a contribution.

Perhaps mention the damage and how much it's cost you, and see what she says?

If it was my dog I would be paying!

Pinkvoid · 05/04/2018 21:21

Those slippers are rank, the dog did you a favour Grin.

In all seriousness, you were warned and didn’t listen. Even the most reformed dogs have their moments, they are animals after all...

OlennasWimple · 05/04/2018 21:25

DH bought me some Mahabis but they were too big, and the faff of sending them back was so bad that I didn't order any replacements in the end

Mivery · 05/04/2018 21:35

I do think YABU. She warned you. You chose to trust her dog despite the warning and it (excuse the pun) came back to bite you. Personally, I think that's on you for leaving out your £80 slippers where he could get them, not her.

stellarfox · 05/04/2018 21:45

I would tell the friend what happened and see if she offers, she might do! She also might have insurance for the dog that covers things like this.

lattewith3shotsplease · 05/04/2018 21:54

OP,
Sorry but I think it's your own fault.

If I was the dogs owner I might offer to pay half price. if I was well off and not poor

BlueEyedBengal · 05/04/2018 22:10

I paid around that for a pair of emu slippers they were the best and lasted ages Smile

makingmiracles · 05/04/2018 22:49

I think yabu thinking about asking her for a contribution, you were already warned that he has destructive tendencies and choose to leave items made with sheeps wool within his reach! Recipe for disaster!

In your shoes I’d probably decline any further requests to have the dog and if questioned, mention the slippers, she may then offer to replace them as presumably you save her a lot of money in kennel fees.

BlondeB83 · 05/04/2018 23:25

Mahabis are amazing! I love mine although I was a bit Hmm at first over the price my DH paid. YANBU but I think convincing your friend to pay that much might be difficult.
