To hope / expect for a contribution towards damaged items...?

I look after a friends dog, probably for a total of about 3-5 weeks a year with the off few days here and there and the occasional week if my friend goes on holiday.

He's a lovely dog, but she warned me that he can be destructive. The first times we had him we were very careful about leaving things he might chew lying around (eg shoes) but he has been fine. We have been having him stay for close on two years now and there have never been any incidents so we gradually became more laid back about leaving things out.

However... I came back in last week (we had him for 10 days) and the bugger had eaten my slipper and chewed a hole in my dogs bed. I was both shocked and pissed off as he has never shown any inkling to be like this since we have been having him, and it's not like it's a recent arrangement. The dog bed was reasonably old and worn but my slippers were £79 and about a year old (I try and buy things to last me as long as possible, and generally they do!)

My friend isn't unreasonable or thoughtless so hopefully this is all hypothetical but would you think it reasonable of me to want to have some kind of contribution towards getting some replacement slippers at the very least...? I know she warned me about the chewing but it's surely understandable that this appeared less of a risk the more he stayed with no issues - or is it my fault for not continuing to hide things away?

I’ve got Ugg slippers - they were about £80, but so worth it. Best slippers I’ve ever had. I don’t see what’s wrong with paying for quality.

AmazingGrace16 · 05/04/2018 19:22

How do mahabis fit? I have quite wide feet so wondering if I need to size up?

MimpiDreams · 05/04/2018 19:22

I just googled those slippers. Sorry but I think the dog did you a favour.

secretsciurusvulgaris · 05/04/2018 19:23

Nothing so exciting. I just meant ordering different soles to mix and match!

gamerchick · 05/04/2018 19:24

£79??? My last pair cost £7:99 and are still going strong five years later.

Do you float?

Scaramoose · 05/04/2018 19:25

ItsGood my sentiments exactly!

I've got Mahabis too and I love them! Ridiculous amount for slippers but DH gave them for my birthday Wink I'd be gutted if the dog ate them. I think you can obviously complain that he's destroyed your best pair and hope your friend offers to pay but other wise it's either accept she won't (and never have the dog again) or lose the friend (and never have the dog again)
We had a friends dog to stay once. It beat the crap out of ours and it cost £700 in the vet for GA and stitches. Dog did recover but so called friend never offered to pay a penny! We've never had a dog to stay again!!

TainBri that’s shocking! I’d have been mortified if that was my dog!

AmazingGrace my feet are really narrow so, sorry, can’t help

Tainbri · 05/04/2018 19:28

Amazing- I've got feet like Donald Duck and they have "moulded" to my feet.

AmazingGrace16 · 05/04/2018 19:28

Thank you :)

myusernamewastakenbyme · 05/04/2018 19:29

Sorry op but those slippers are hideous....

PuppyMonkey · 05/04/2018 19:30

Mine must have not only moulded but shrank into my feet then. Honestly, they were a waste of £££s

Did nobody see my fantastic picture?Sad

Scaramoose · 05/04/2018 19:33

No, no pic but I’m looking on my phone while sorting laundry (as I’m very glamorous)

That’s weird, I can see the pic on my post from 19.19.

Showergel1 · 05/04/2018 19:35

My first thought hearing that he'd chewed a dog bed and slippers would be 'thank god it wasn't anything expensive' so I'd need it spelling out to me that they were expensive. Then I'd offer to pay.

However I wouldn't let you have my dog for free anyway.

penguinsandpanda · 05/04/2018 19:38

I would mention it and see what she says. I would certainly pay but I would also assume say £40 for a dog bed and £20 for slippers. That's still a lot cheaper than kennels.

Tinkobell · 05/04/2018 19:39

Lovely slippers...can see why you'd be put out a tad. Good advice saying they're 'shoes' though .....might help with the £££

Scaramoose · 05/04/2018 19:41

Tinko I wouldn’t say they were shoes as that’s technically fibbing to get more cash, which I certainly don’t want to do! Her partner collected the dog and knows about the slippers, and remarked on knowing what they cost so I don’t need to spell it out further thankfully

TheOnlyAletheia · 05/04/2018 19:42

I’m surprised that the owner doesn’t pay and if I were her I would have no compunction in shelling out for whatever was damaged. Definitely ask,

Scaramoose · 05/04/2018 19:43

Penguins the dog bed was inherited from my mums old dog and only the cover was ruined (which is a relief as it’s a bean bag one so they’d have been EVERYWHERE!)

buttercup54321 · 05/04/2018 19:43

Your were in charge of him so you are to blame. How long did you leave him for? Perhaps he was bored.

Scaramoose · 05/04/2018 19:43

Puppy i’ll look properly later on my laptop

OP posts:
Scaramoose · 05/04/2018 19:44

I had him for ten days. He’d had a two hour walk beforehand, he wasn’t bored!
