How old was your previous car? Dont forget that if your new car is valued more than the previous one this will make a big difference.

RJnomore1 · 05/04/2018 18:40

I've just bought a brand new car and it's only costing me £2 a month more to insure than my 11 year old Astra. I had to go back to the price comparison websites though. My own insurer wanted to go from £21 to £34 a month.

Have you checked elsewhere?

firstworldproblems2018 · 05/04/2018 18:49

Go on a comparison site like go compare and have a look. I saved a fortune by doing that. You may not find cheaper, but worth a try.

PandaPieForTea · 05/04/2018 18:49

I found it cheaper to end my existing insurance and shop around for a new policy when changed car.

reddington · 05/04/2018 18:51

Not really, doesn’t work like that.

mercurymaze · 05/04/2018 19:37

I will shop around then it's so much a jump in price!

x2boys · 05/04/2018 19:39

Have you moved? The cost can jump up because of post Coad, where you live etc?

x2boys · 05/04/2018 19:39

Code*

mercurymaze · 05/04/2018 19:43

No haven't moved other car was 2013 focus

It's actually the other way re value of car. Worked for an insurance company and the higher value the car, the more likely they see you to take care of it, therefore insurance is less. Lesser value cars are, apparently, not as well looked after and will be dinged and scraped more.

Imustbemad00 · 05/04/2018 20:22

Just to add an irrelevant point, my 12 year old car cost me £150 pm to insure, plus an initial £400 deposit. This year it went down to £100 pm and I thought I was lucky!

RedHelenB · 05/04/2018 20:27

My car is 11 years newer and more than 8 times the value but only went up byour £30 for the remaining time with my current insurers.

lampygirl · 05/04/2018 20:34

Fiesta potentially involved in more accidents than focus as more likely to be a first car for people. This makes a difference. I went from a 2007 BMW estate to a 2014 Merc Estate slightly more powerful but nothing drastically difference and insurance went up £20 a year. Presumably as largely identical cars driven by the same driver profile.

FairfaxAikman · 05/04/2018 20:41

What car did you drive before?
If it was something other than a Fiesta that might account for it - it certainly used to be the case that Fiestas were amongst the most stolen cars in the UK. They are also a favourite with boy racers so may statistically be more likely to be in a crash.

strawberrysparkle · 05/04/2018 20:46

Mines £130 a month so yes very normal

Bluelady · 05/04/2018 20:50

I got a new car last year and mine went down. You're going to hate me, mine's £220 a year, some aspects of getting older are really awesome! I always check out the price comparison websites.

nocake · 05/04/2018 20:54

Car insurance is all about data. Your insurance company have data that shows that people who drive cars like your new one have more accidents than people who drive cars like your old one. It's as simple as that.

Shop around as another insurance company might have different data.

DragonflyInn · 05/04/2018 20:55

I just got a new car. It was going to put my insurance up from around £400/year to well over £500. Shopped around and I got equal cover, plus lower excess, for £300. So was very grateful for the push to look elsewhere!

MinesABabyGuiness · 05/04/2018 20:59

I've just bought a new car and my insurance has gone down by £5 a month.

I can't believe some of you are paying £150 per month, that is ridiculous! DH and I are both insured to drive eachother cars (I have business use too) and it's £30 a month.

Hereshopingforimprovement · 05/04/2018 21:02

DP and I are both named drivers on each other's policies and have business insurance too. We are both less than £250 per year. That sounds very expensive.

HighwayDragon1 · 05/04/2018 21:04

I pay nearly £40pm for a vectra, but that has all the add ons! Tesco wanted £75pm, they could jog on and I got a meerkat toy for switching

nokidshere · 05/04/2018 21:09

Our 3yr old ford mondeo fully comp, DH driver me named, inc commuting, legal cover, protected no claims and replacement car if necessary is only £21.50 a month

£150 a month is more than my 18 ye old son pays 😧😮

nokidshere · 05/04/2018 21:12

My 18yr old has a Ford Fiesta, it's his first car and he started driving last August and his is only £88

Topsyloulou · 05/04/2018 21:14

Insurance is calculated on the risk of you being involved in an incident and the cost of damage if you do.

By changing car you are less familiar with that vehicle than your old one so there is a higher risk of you being involved in an incident. As your car is also newer there is likely to be an increased cost to repair any damage to it, things like parking sensors, reversing cameras, heated front windscreen, metallic bumpers etc not necessarily performance affecting improvements. Cost of repairs are increasing all the time. Diesel cars and automatics also cost more to insure. There is also the propensity for theft to factor in and the potential damage that the car could do to any pedestrians. If the car is completely written off it will cost the insurer more than if your old car was written off too.

Topsyloulou · 05/04/2018 21:16

Just to add, always shop around on price comparison sites, a lot of companies will charge more for a mid term change than they would for a new policy. Only takes a couple of minutes to check but could save you £100s.
