My 18yr old has a Ford Fiesta, it's his first car and he started driving last August and his is only £88

£88 a year or a month? Either way that's unbelievably cheap for an 18 year old, do you know which insurer it is?

I never stay with the same company for more than a year. I always go to a comparison site and see who has the best deal as the current company is rarely the best deal. Just switch, its easy and they pretty much expect it now.

When we replaced our car a couple of months ago (keep in mind I am old, and one of the advantages of being old is your are cheaper to insure) they wanted a ridiculous amount to change the details. I went to price comparison sites, cancelled the old policy and took out a new one. Saved a bomb.
When I asked them why the ridiculous rise, they too tried to say it was about the fact it was a new car to me, taking no account that I was, at the time already driving 3 different cars each week, and have driven dozens and dozens over the years. Ridiculous argument.

£88 per month and it's with Hastings direct. I went via one of the comparison sites though.

Just him as driver, can't remember if I added dh as named driver, fully comp, legal cover, replacement car if necessary.

Sorry I meant to say also that he does not have a black box either which many teenage insurers insist on

Thing is, all sorts of things affect your insurance. Your postcode is pretty crucial, plus lesser things like where it is parked, both overnight and in the day; the number of miles you do; who else is a named driver; your profession ; all sorts of things. Anyone of us can say "mine is this" but amounts don't really help.
The best advice, always, is to set aside a few hours to do some serious shopping around.
