To think he will never stop??

Having bottles to go to bed with.

To make my life easier (single mum, no help), I started giving my DS a bottle to go to bed with. Now, he screams if he doesn't get one, so as you can imagine, he now gets one every time.

He has one for his nap morning, afternoon and then when he goes to bed.

He will NOT go to sleep without one. How do I even start to stop this?? Have I messed up??

I've made a rod for my own back haven't I Sad

How old is he?

SecretBum · 04/04/2018 22:48

How old is he? And he will go to sleep without one, it will just be a few shitt y nights before he gives in.

lattewith3shotsplease · 04/04/2018 22:48

OP,
Whatever makes your life easier.
I'm sure he wont be going to school with a bottle, so don't worry too much. Smile

bionicnemonic · 04/04/2018 22:49

Is it water? If not try water to begin with to break the habit and if he doesn't sleep then he doesn't sleep - three days to break a habit my mum used to say - she may have made it up but when you believe it you just keep going and hold on for day three!

FickleHuman · 04/04/2018 22:51

Sorry! Totally forgot to put age.

He's just turned 1

I thought this too but he’s 20 now and he doesn’t still take one to bed Wink

ObiJuanKenobi · 04/04/2018 22:52

My two year old twins do this I'm trying to wean them off them now.
How old is yours OP? I wouldn't worry if little but if he's 16 it may be a little too late.. Wink

FickleHuman · 04/04/2018 22:52

He has a bottle of milk for morning and afternoon nap and bedtime nap and then has juice if he wakes up crying through the night.

FickleHuman · 04/04/2018 22:54

However, he is forever going through his nappies so if waking up because he's cold, wet and uncomfortable and then wants another bottle to get back to sleep with.

He's a stubborn child. Stayed up whinging/crying the other night for 2 hours out of protest from being put to bed.

I took a bottle to bed until I was about 6 😬

Then someone made a comment, mum stopped it. I was the youngest of 9, she did baby me and gave into my demands.

I went onto suck my thumb and didn't stop sucking that until I was about 14

Muddlingalongalone · 04/04/2018 22:57

Still tiny - I would go with the anything for an easy life theory generally, just be a bit careful about tooth brushing.
Dd1 had bottles at bedtime only, until we went on holiday when she was 2.5 and I "forgot" them.

ObiJuanKenobi · 04/04/2018 22:57

Sounds pretty normal to me Grin I wouldn't give juice in the middle of the night though, normally just watered down milk (half milk half hot water)

Walkerbean16 · 04/04/2018 22:59

he is still a baby! he will be fine.

i wouldn't give him juice in the middle of the night though, it will rot his teeth.

Aquamarine1029 · 04/04/2018 22:59

Go cold turkey. No more bottle for sleeping. You'll a few shitty days, but then it will be over.

FickleHuman · 04/04/2018 22:59

My ds has started sucking his thumb if I take his dummy off him when he doesn't need it.

I know I can't fool proof anything but I can't be letting a 6 yr old take a bottle to bed with them.

He's welcome to have a drink taken in a cup as I do get up some nights for a drink so it's only fair however! He will NOT accept a cup, he screams & throws it. He will only have a bottle with a teat.

Pinkvoid · 04/04/2018 22:59

That sounds really normal to me. I was still BFing at one and they always had a night time feed so don’t see why a bottle should be any different? It’s just nice and comforting for them.

JoanOfNarc · 04/04/2018 22:59

Please stop the juice. His teeth will rot.

NapQueen · 04/04/2018 23:00

Swap to water for night times. Dont worry about the naptime bottles as theyll go as he drops his naps. Eventually start offering 1oz less milk at bedtime for a while and just gradually reduce over time.

Juice in the middle of the night is bonkers though!

ny20005 · 04/04/2018 23:00

I gave mine bottles till they were nearly 2 & then started watering down the milk. They soon went off asking for it

Schnauzermum2 · 04/04/2018 23:01

dS dropped his night bottle at 2.5. At one it wouldn’t even cross my mind to drop it. He’s fine, you’re doing fine. One day he’ll just decide he doesn’t want it anymore

OwlinaTree · 04/04/2018 23:02

If you really want to stop it, try getting rid of nap ones first. Can you change nap routine slightly maybe? Will he sleep in the car/pushchair without one? You could do that for naps for a few days till he breaks the daytime habit.

My 20 month old still has a bottle of milk before bed and when she gets up, she breast feeds before bed too at night but not for naps. I'm going to give up the breast feed soon, but I'm not in too much of a rush with the bottles.

FickleHuman · 04/04/2018 23:02

The "juice" is hugely watered down but il change it to something else from now on.

I do brush his teeth or at least he chews the toothbrush!

I'm wondering whether to bin the bottles and give him his milk out of cups and no more fluids for bed.

He only seems to drink all his milk if he has it when he goes to sleep. Otherwise he grazes and doesn't have it all

OP posts:
FickleHuman · 04/04/2018 23:03

What if I change it and he screams because he wants his juice??

OP posts:
Lulu2106 · 04/04/2018 23:03

My DS used to be like this. I started to decrease the amount of milk I put in the bottle each time and when it finished that was it. Eventually it wasn't worth it to him to wake up for a tiny sip of milk so gave up altogether. You could try this process slowly??

Muddlingalongalone · 04/04/2018 23:03

Missed the juice bit - I'd switch that to water. If he's thirsty he'll drink it.
