To think that there are more affairs in the police force

I have a friend who is a police officer. The stories she tells me about work colleagues having affairs behind their husbands/wife's backs seems to be a new one every week.
I have known her for years and some of the details of these stories maybe exaggerated but I have no reason to think she is lying.
The thing is these affairs are all happening during work hours, mainly on night shifts. Quite often the people involved end up leaving their partners and family's but then a few years down the line they have another affair with another colleague Confused
Not just uniformed officers but support staff (phone) too.
Now I haven't been living under a rock and I realise affairs happen but it seems rife in the police force.
Not only that but should they not actually be policing rather than shagging it is that just me ?

I’ve heard affairs are rife in the police but very much doubt they are shagging on the job they are stretched enough as it is.

piercinggelo · 04/04/2018 15:31

People are having affairs in all professions

NapQueen · 04/04/2018 15:32

I dont think its solely the pf. I worked in a hotel and not only was it rife there, but same across the other sister hotels and amongst the regular business guests.

I think generally cheating/affairs are more prevalent than expected.

everafteragain · 04/04/2018 15:33

Yeah that's what I thought. You hear loads of stories about how stretched they are don't you. Maybe it's on breaks and things then I don't know but it's deffo during night shifts so that their partners don't find out.

You hear loads of stories about how stretched they are don't you.

That's because they don't t have enough manpower, not because the staff they do have are mid orgie Hmm

everafteragain · 04/04/2018 15:40

Yes I realise that of course they are and obviously my friend has told me about all the crap they have to put up with too.

TheShapeofYou · 04/04/2018 15:42

I've worked for them for a few years and you're right. I think the divorce rate for coppers is super high too?

Maybe it's because they deal with such horrible situations that they feel life is too short, or need some escape and light relief (pun intended).

everafteragain · 04/04/2018 15:45

Yes it can't be easy having to deal with the things they do especially on the front line Sad
It seems to go on with the civilian police too tho (the ones who are working on computers not directly dealing with the crime) I just wonder if it's more accepted in that profession ?
I work in retail and despite it being a large chain not much happens.
Maybe it's the night shifts

My friend is a policewomen and she says there is a lot of affairs, at work, all the time.

musicposy · 04/04/2018 15:53

I think it can be like it not just in the police. DH works at an airport and at one point I thought he must be the only one not having an affair (I hope!). They're all leaving their partners for other people they work with and stories are rife of people shagging in the few places they don't have CCTV.

The DDs work at a fast food place, it's a running joke that everyone there has had sex with everyone else there, usually in the stock cupboard. DD says she could never date anyone who works there as she knows exactly where they've been! There is also that they're being paid to work, not have dalliances in the stock room...

Yes some of it may be exaggerated but I think it's rife in lots of places.

musicposy · 04/04/2018 15:54

Both of the above have night shifts so you could be right on that.

everafteragain · 04/04/2018 15:55

Musicposy I think I lead a sheltered life Wink

OP posts:
piercinggelo · 04/04/2018 15:55

Why do people think it's only night shifts where people have affairs? How bizarre.

everafteragain · 04/04/2018 15:56

I'm sure the night shifts can't help

OP posts:
everafteragain · 04/04/2018 15:57

No I don't think it's only night shifts but most of these affairs that my friend tells me about happen on the night shifts

My DP is police and yeah lots of stories of affairs.

But it’s the same in my profession (doctor).

I think professions where you go through a unique and often stressful/traumatic experiences together that other people might not understand probably have a higher rate because people feel that the other half ‘doesn’t get it/them’. Maybe?

workshyfop · 04/04/2018 16:03

It’s common. And conducting an affair while on duty certainly does happen. Reported it, senior officers don’t care.

everafteragain · 04/04/2018 16:03

Yeah I can see that they might think that. But then they have another affair even though they have left wife/husband for someone who understands. Obviously there are some people who are married for years and work in the police force so it's not everyone. However out of all my friends she is the one who seems to see this the most

OP posts:
everafteragain · 04/04/2018 16:04

Workshy senior officers probably at it too 🙈

The police are well known for it. Possibly a combination of emotional bonding due to sharing difficult experiences, the shifts making it easier to cover up your movements and the type of people who choose the role tend to be more likely to take risks and enjoy greater variety in life than your average office worker.

dimots · 04/04/2018 16:09

Also I've noticed that once an 'affair culture' takes hold in a particular workplace it becomes normalised and people who otherwise might not have considered an affair can get drawn in.

Icequeen01 · 04/04/2018 16:09

My dad was 30 years in the police, my DH was 30 years in the police and I worked as a civilian in the police for 5 years.

The divorce rate is quite high in the police (my dad left my mum after 26 years of marriage for a police civilian worker). I think the relationships between police officers can be pretty intense and full on. Both CID and uniform can spend a great deal of time with their colleagues and I guess inevitably relationships form, especially if you have a partner at home who doesn't "get" the shifts and long hours and can appear to be less than sympathetic.

My DH was lucky with me I think as I was used to the police life because of my dad. Both my dad and DH worked on Major Crime Units so could be gone for long periods of time if there was a murder or major incident. I had a friend who married a police officer who had no experience of the police life and it nearly broke up their marriage and her sanity! She expected him home on time each night, which was never going to happen.

Having said all that I also worked in the city in the financial sector for 25 years and the amount of affairs going on when "abroad in business" was staggering so it's not just happening in the police force.

Coulddowithanap · 04/04/2018 16:10

Don't know about those mentioned in the op but there is no way DP would have time for an affair even on night shift (also police) they are so stretched. He has mentioned a couple of affairs (not in his team but another local one) but I'm sure that's any more that in any other line of work surely?

everafteragain · 04/04/2018 16:13

Icequeen that is really interesting thank you. They must have seen some awful things in their time.

OP posts:
everafteragain · 04/04/2018 16:14

Coulddowithanap you would be surprised what they have time for Blush
