To think DS may be having some kind of seizures

He's always been very shaky since he was born, he'll just at random times start shaking throughout his whole body but he's still very alert and doesn't seem at all affected by it. It's never worried me and I just took it as an unexplained little quirk he had. However recently the shaking has changed. He'll be laid on the floor one minute and then start shaking mainly in the arms and legs, his head arches back and his eyes kind of roll back however it only lasts around 3 to 4 seconds. I mentioned to my mum and sister that I was taking him to the GP and they basically said I was being silly, it's nothing (they've never seen it happen) my sister also mentioned that if it was serious it would last longer. AIBU to take him to the doctors? Could it be seizures? If not does anyone have any experience and know what it is? Thanks in advance x

I think that sounds very much like seizures. I may not be, but it’s definitely worth a trip to the GP. If you can catch one on video that would be ideal.

HollowTalk · 03/04/2018 22:51

Look at it this way - what harm could it do to see the doctor? If you can, I'd try to film him when he's like that, to show the doctor, but otherwise I would definitely ask for a quick appointment. I hope everything's OK. You sound like a lovely mum Flowers

HairyMaclary · 03/04/2018 22:51

Take a video of the ‘seizures’, ideally more than one and take them with you to the GP. It is worth a visit to the Dr though.

DancingLedge · 03/04/2018 22:53

Yes, take him to the Dr.
Take a video , and show it to Dr.

I've no idea whether this is a seizure, but it would be a very good idea to get it checked out.

HateTheDF · 03/04/2018 22:53

My DM is epileptic, she has different seizures and some of them really do last as little as 3-4 seconds. I'd get him checked out if I were you, it can't do any harm and will put your mind at ease.

ElspethTascioni · 03/04/2018 22:54

I wouldn’t go to the GP, i’d take a video next time it happens and go to A&E. Google “infantile spasms” and watch some videos. You are right to take this seriously.

Puffycat · 03/04/2018 22:55

Sounds like petit mals. Definitely take him to doctor

JamForBrains · 03/04/2018 22:56

Not all seizures last a long time. Some can last a couple of seconds others a few minutes. The stiffening and posturing do make it sound like a seizure so it is definitely worth a trip to the doctor. Try and video it if possible.

Agree with Jam, it's worth a visit x

Fishbiscuits · 03/04/2018 23:09

Agree with those saying video him. Dd1 had epilepsy (she seems to have grown out of it now) and her consultant said it was really useful to see the video dh had taken of one of her fits, as it can help with diagnosis.

Thanks everyone. We didn’t get the chance to take him to the GP as coincidentally he had a pretty obvious seizure last night that lasted over a minute. He’s just been discharged from hospital and is getting the care he needs. Thanks again everyone xx

Yes I know @zzzzz they observed him and took his bloods and everything’s normal and he’s back to himself so they didn’t think there was a reason to keep him in but I’m very nervous and on edge. He has a follow up on 2 weeks and a brain scan in 6 as epilepsy on both sides of the family x

Petit mals is not a term used any more, but it doesn't sound like what you mean anyway, that relates to an absence seizure.
There are at least 40 types of seizures, and you do need to see a dr, asap.

nalalama · 04/04/2018 23:44

@zzzzz 2 that I'm confident were seizures

You don't need an ambulance if you have a diagnosis of epilepsy for a seizure of 3 mins.

Labradoodliedoodoo · 04/04/2018 23:58

Try and film it for gp. But yes take him. They are seizures.

Labradoodliedoodoo · 04/04/2018 23:59

What do you mean who told me that? It's the truth. Why would you need an ambulance? What for?

I'm a HCP with 2 children with epilepsy. I have midazolam at home (which you wouldn't use until past 5 mins at least) and no need for oxygen for a 3 min seizure.
There is no need to call the ambulance for a child who already has a diagnosis, for a 3 min seizure. The ambulance can't do anything you can't do, the hospital won't do anything you can't do at home.

If you don't have a proper diagnosis, or if you have a particular reason to need an ambulance then obviously this doesn't hold. But as a standard, its true.
