To think DS may be having some kind of seizures

He's always been very shaky since he was born, he'll just at random times start shaking throughout his whole body but he's still very alert and doesn't seem at all affected by it. It's never worried me and I just took it as an unexplained little quirk he had. However recently the shaking has changed. He'll be laid on the floor one minute and then start shaking mainly in the arms and legs, his head arches back and his eyes kind of roll back however it only lasts around 3 to 4 seconds. I mentioned to my mum and sister that I was taking him to the GP and they basically said I was being silly, it's nothing (they've never seen it happen) my sister also mentioned that if it was serious it would last longer. AIBU to take him to the doctors? Could it be seizures? If not does anyone have any experience and know what it is? Thanks in advance x

I stay conscious during my seizures - there are 40 different types so they most definitely could be seizures. And they do sound to me like seizures, sorry. The GP may not even recognise it (I was diagnosed with anxiety and vertigo for a long time until I was referred) as some GPs I saw had very limited understanding of my seizure type. I’d call Epilepsy Action, I can’t rate their helpline highly enough, they’ve helped me so much. Good luck Flowers

Sorry, I have just seen your update. I hope he is ok and that you are ok.

You DO need to call an ambulance for a seizure of over FIVE minutes because of epilepticus status.

We are having my daughter investigated for something similar. Sometimes she will go a couple of weeks with no episodes but then have several in a day.. ranging from 5 seconds to over a minute. She has an EEG which came back clear but having follow up soon. They took it seriously when I described it to them

We were told over three minutes get an ambulance. But that is because my DC pretty much always finished the seizure within a minute, two at the most. So three minutes would be unusually long for them, and that is I think why the advice varies. If a child routinely fits for three minutes then comes round by themselves then no need to call an ambulance if they are a known epileptic. If not, and it is a much longer fit than usual then call an ambulance.

Dd goes straight through to resus and I am very very sure it couldn’t be “managed at home”. Long seizures can cause life changing damage

Long seizures yes. Not 3 mins. I have managed at least 500 seizures at home over the last decade so please don't speak to my experience, only your own.

Jesus that’s sounds worrying op but hopefully he will get sorted now.

Best of luck Flowers

I was told five minutes by my daughter’s consultant. We were never given any rescue medication as they said they would only prescribe it if she had a fit lasting longer than five minutes, which she never did.

YourWanMajella · 05/04/2018 16:10

Stop telling people that every seizure needs an ambulance! All you are doing is making sure that when you really need one there won't be any available.

I was told 5 minutes is when you call for help too

migusta · 07/04/2018 11:32

Thanks for the advice everyone we were told 4 minutes so somewhere in-between we've been keeping close eye but he's been fine since. He's having an EEG so hopefully will get some answers
