When I was a young child (early 80s) I had a story book that I long to read again with my children. I have tried googling the storyline but no joy.

The basic storyline was a character who I think may have been called old king cole (or something like that) and they were in a castle but then they had to go away on an adventure and ended up in a sweet land. The trees were lollipops. I think there was a jester in it as well.

I know it's not a lot to go on. But can anyone help?

This rings a bell for me.

Couldn’t be Enid Blyton’s Faraway Tree could it?

Pengggwn · 02/04/2018 20:24

Noggin the Nog?
King Rollo?

Fruitcorner123 · 02/04/2018 20:24

Sorry i am same generation but can't recognise the book so thought i would give you a bump.

Callmecordelia · 02/04/2018 20:25

King Rollo was my first thought.

Rubyslippers7780 · 02/04/2018 20:25

There are a series of books about King Rollo..very 70's.. he has a magician who helps him ?

divadee · 02/04/2018 20:25

autumn no I still have the faraway tree and it's not that one. I have searched for this book for years with no success. I'm beginning to wonder if I made it up Blush

I remember we read it in school though and I loved it so much my mum bought it for me.

Sorry cross post

divadee · 02/04/2018 20:26

Nope. I'm sure it's not King Rollo. I remember watching that on tv. Oh I'm showing my age.

kiwielite · 02/04/2018 20:26

I was going to suggest The Faraway Tree too, there was a land of goodies...

divadee · 02/04/2018 20:31

I have just remembered they got to the land of sweets on a boat or something like that. I can clearly in my head the illustrations from the book.

OP posts:
divadee · 02/04/2018 20:31

*see the illustrations.

ScreamingValenta · 02/04/2018 20:33

Was it an adaptation of The Nutcracker?

Clankboing · 02/04/2018 20:33

Is it one of the stories from The Wishing Chair by Enid Blyton?

Oddcat · 02/04/2018 20:34

Would this site be any help www.oldchildrensbooks.com/looking-for-a-book?page=2

divadee · 02/04/2018 20:34

screaming I don't think I was ever as cultured enough to have the nutcracker 😂😂

clank nope as I still have my childhood copy of that as well and it's not the wishing chair.

SquatBetty · 02/04/2018 20:35

The Nutcracker (ballet) has a land of sweets in it. Could it have been a story version of that?

SquatBetty · 02/04/2018 20:41

Oops cross post

ScreamingValenta · 02/04/2018 20:42

divadee Grin

According to the Goodreads site, there are currently 48 children's storybook versions of the Nutcracker, so it must be fairly popular!

divadee · 02/04/2018 20:51

screaming I just don't think it was the nutcracker. I know the story and it doesn't ring a bell!!! Is there also a queen in the nutcracker? I remember a big fat king and he had a queen and definitely a jester and I think some kids all in the same boat.

ScreamingValenta · 02/04/2018 20:55

Hmm, I can't think of any other ideas Sad. Was it a picture book, or more like an illustrated novel?

Callamia · 02/04/2018 20:57

It sounds like Enid Blyton. I hoped it would be a Book of Brownies, but I don’t think it is.

CrystallStarr · 02/04/2018 21:00

Well you know how you can remember the illustrations? And you know how Mumsnet loves a diagram?....

raindropsandsunshine · 02/04/2018 21:01

That sounds familiar, it wasn't one of those thin ones with the gold binding was it? With a train of characters on the back?

Em308 · 02/04/2018 21:01

I can't help I'm afraid but I share your frustration. I had a couple of childhood books that I still search for to read to my son (although he may be too old now...). One was about a conker called Prickle that wanted to escape his tree and the boss conker called Plonker the conkerer, this book simply doesn't exist anymore. And the other was The house that Beebo built, a really beautiful book that is very rare and costs hundreds if you can ever find a copy. I hope you find your book.

divadee · 02/04/2018 21:19

raindrops I remember it was a hardback book and I thought it was a yellow cover. It it could of been gold.
