When I was a young child (early 80s) I had a story book that I long to read again with my children. I have tried googling the storyline but no joy.

The basic storyline was a character who I think may have been called old king cole (or something like that) and they were in a castle but then they had to go away on an adventure and ended up in a sweet land. The trees were lollipops. I think there was a jester in it as well.

I know it's not a lot to go on. But can anyone help?

Your description rings such a bell, it's driving me crazy now! Was it a book with a collection of stories? I immediately thought of The Land of Nod, it was a story in a book that I remember along with other illustrated rhymes like Three Little Kittens and something about Gingham Cats, they tore each other to shreads! I've just Googled Land of Nod poem and it fits with my recollection but it was elaborated on in the book I had with lots of children going there with a lovely man/ king driving the boat to an amazing place with lollipops and sweets. They saw a queen of the land (I think) and then they went home to wake up?

samewitches you might be on to something there. I can't remember if it was one whole book. I just remember this one part of the sweet land.

I've been in a Googling frenzy but I can't find it! I remember the illustrations of the 'Land of Nod' story so well, giant lolllipops and the children all blissfully playing and licking giant candycanes. The book I'm thinking of 100% had the 3 little kittens who lost their mittens in, I can recite it! And the bloody gingham cats who fought to the death Hunger Games style, other ornaments looked on. I'm furious at you for reminding me of this when I can't find it!!Grin

Ahh, I've found it! The poems were by Eugene Field and it's the Sugar Plum Tree I'm thinking of. Combined with Wynken, Blynken and Nod. The Gingham dog and Calico cat! The poems I remember clearly now and I think it was the illustrations in the particular book I had that made me think of a king taking them in a boat. Anyway, sorry to derail! I hope you find it, I know how crazy it can drive you!

It's not part of the Wizard of Oz series?
There was a whole series after the main one - and what you said reminds me of one of the lands that had to be travelled to?

Any memorable phrases / snippets of dialogue to help narrow it down?

I had this book as a kid and I am also trying to find it. My Dad has fond memories of Plonker the Conker. Did you ever find it?

Sadly no. Many years of googling and nope.
