Their national anthem is mightily long. However, ours is just awful imo

Scottish and love our national anthem, flower of Scotland. My dd sang it with her class mates at a school assembly and there wasn't a dry eye in the room.

I hate GSTQ and as a republican, I don't sing it. But I detest FoS in equal measure (I'm Scottish) it's a wailing, anti-English, wha's- like - us dirge.

I agree we should change from GSTQ and just keep that for royal occasions. There's no reason why we couldn't slightly modify the words of Land of Hope and Glory to represent modern Britain though.

It's a bit of a dirge. I used to like Flower of Scotland until it was hijacked by the nationalists. La Marseillaise is the best one.

Billy Connolly said that the Archers Theme should be the UK anthem and I think I agree with him.

My friends who are not British think it’s weird that the Ebgland football team sings ‘god save the Queen’ ad it’s the UK anthem and England should have their own anthem.

At the last Commonwealth Games the English team used Jerusalem.

I wouldn't really care about the anti Scottish verse in GSTQ if it was just the English anthem but it's not, its the British anthem which is why it's a problem.
(Although I don't know many Scots who would sing it anyway!)

Love flower of scotland. The only time I’m ever British is during the Olympics. That’s the only time I’m ever happy to hear it.

The bit in God Save the Queen which is anti-Scottish is definitely there, but the very last verse which is never sung:

"Lord grant that Marshal Wade
May by thy mighty aid
Victory bring
May he sedition hush
And like a torrent rush
Rebellious Scots to crush
God save the Queen"

Marshall Wade was (I think) sent to Scotland after Bonnie Prince Charlie was defeated to keep the Scots in order. Given that GSTQ was written in 1745, that reference was much more relevant at that time than now.

As for Flower of Scotland, the whole song is about sending the English "home to think again". But they're harking back even further - to 1314 and Bannockburn. It's all a bit pathetic.

We need something a bit more 21st century. Just don't let Simon Cowell get involved.

We should start a petition to change it to LOHAG after the queen shuffles off. I think that would be an appropriate time to change it!

The current one is so dreary. I would infinitely prefer Jerusalem (despite slightly bonkers lyrics) or Land of Hope and Glory.

The only time you really hear national anthems is at sporting events and tbh I've never heard one from any country that doesn't sound dreary.
