Does anyone else's DH always get ill on holiday?

BigSandyBalls2015 · 31/03/2018 11:12

I'm trying my best to be sympathetic I really am. It's a cold, can't be flu as he wouldnt have been walking around all day complaining. I get it's possibly quite a nasty cold but ......... still a cold.

FFS every time we go away .... colds, the shits, nausea .... doesn't sleep well due to 'different' bed.

I feel like a bitch but also feel like I'm on holiday with my grandad, not my DH in his 40s!!

The teens take the piss "dad you really shouldn't go further than the Isle of Wight, that's overseas enough for you'.

I feel it's all about him and he has no awareness that this also spoils our holiday.

Yes, but it doesn't interfere with our holidays as lucky for him us he just gets on with life.

To be fair I always think the reason he gets ill is because he works so hard long weeks and weekends that once he stops his body react's to not having to be doing stuff.

sarahC40 · 31/03/2018 11:38

Is he a teacher? Standard reaction to end of term is to spend at least a couple of days ill as a reaction to stopping, I think.

GreenTulips · 31/03/2018 11:39

Yep mine too.

notapizzaeater · 31/03/2018 11:44

Yes but he doesn't do it on purpose ..... last time I checked you can't decide to have a chest infection / cold etc ...

zomlingsattack · 31/03/2018 11:45

I had a week off recently, am usually busy with work and 4 year old. I had really bad chest infection on antibiotics felt dreadful. My Dr says it's quite common for people to get ill at the beginning of a holiday as they suddenly stop the manic rushing and relax

SpringNowPlease2018 · 31/03/2018 11:45

I am the one who gets ill
Ive given up on foreign holidays but not really fussed as I did a lot of stuff in one trip in my 20s

It's always Europe where I'm ill, America fine. Never been to Asia or Africa so don't know.

I have a friend with the same issues, her DH and DC just go without her and she gets party time Grin

PuppyMonkey · 31/03/2018 11:49

I think it’s quite common for people to get ill when they wind down from a busy period of work. Dose him up with Paracetamol and try to carry on as normal.

Willthisdoo · 31/03/2018 11:53

Yup, mine too. I wouldn’t mind so much if he didn’t make such a goddam fuss about it.

mimibunz · 31/03/2018 11:56

My feet and his stomach. What a pair we are.

pandarific · 31/03/2018 11:57

Honestly, ignore him. Go and do something fun with the kids and tell him you'll see him later.

Can't stand whininess from grown adults!

Aprilmightmemynewname · 31/03/2018 11:57

Exh always suffered from twatitis on holiday!! Ignore and leave him be is my advice.

pandarific · 31/03/2018 11:59

If you want to be really nice to him, get the GOOD cold stuff from the pharmacy while you're out - nurofen cold and flu max should cheer him up.

LexieLulu · 31/03/2018 12:00

My DH always gets holiday tummy. So will often say he doesn't want to do XYZ today as he wants to stay near-ish to a toilet.

I now secretly pack diarrhoea tablets as I know he wouldn't even if reminding "I'll be fine". So I end up making him take the tablets. I'll give him a day off to chill (especially if it's a 2 week him) then tell him to STFU 😂

UpstartCrow · 31/03/2018 12:00

It can be a sign that he's under a lot of stress to hold it together when he's working.

giveitfive · 31/03/2018 12:02

For about the last 20 years my DH appears to have been either just getting over or just coming down with something that could be nasty and is therefore a Good excuse for just about anything. Always worse and competitive if I have something. I once lied about having the shits and within 3 hours he had a worse dose..... I just ignore it now.

There are worse things he could be than a mild hypochondriac....

JaneEyre70 · 31/03/2018 12:02

DH usually gets a cold or sleeps for the 1st few days. He runs his own business though and I never complain as his body is just adjusting to the change of pace. Going abroad is usually a nightmare so we mainly holiday in the UK so I can take the dog and I've got company for the 1st few days Grin

LavenderDoll · 31/03/2018 12:08

Yes mine does
But as others have said he works very long hours so I always thinks its his body adjusting

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 31/03/2018 12:08

I almost always got ill when I took a break from work, especially if we changed climate. Even now I quite often get ill just after Christmas, or before Christmas if we're not hosting. I think it's something to do with my body having a sudden release from stress.

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 31/03/2018 12:08

DH had a stinking cold when we went away at Christmas - he spent the best part of a week leaving snotty tissues in every pocket, and sitting with his hand over his forehead. I finally cracked and told him he was allowed to be ill, but not to make such a bloody performance out of it, as he was pissing everyone else off.

I felt a bit smug that the cough I had at the same time (which didn't stop me going out and about with the DC) was diagnosed as mild pneumonia when we got back Grin.

I do understand that he gets ill on holiday as he'll have been working ridiculous hours beforehand (own business), but it's the performance of being ill I can't stand.

ReanimatedSGB · 31/03/2018 12:12

It's definitely true that people get ill on holiday because they have hit a point where their bodies go: enough.
However, it's also true that men in general expect to be pampered and indulged, while women, especially wives&mothers, are expected to stop whining and just get on with it.

JustHereForThePooStories · 31/03/2018 12:16

I always get ill on holiday. I work very long hours in a very stressful job, so I think it’s just my body crashing.

I really can’t help it, and I do just get on with it or try and suggest we do something a little quieter when I’m not feeling well so we’re still out and about.

Funnily enough, I find it really difficult to wake up when I’m on holiday too. Normally, my alarm goes off at 06.50 and I’m up and in the shower for 07.10. If I don’t have to be up, I constantly sleep through alarms.

BrazzleDazzleDay · 31/03/2018 12:16

My back goes nearly everytime we go away, its a wonder dh doesnt just leave me at home

Lizzie48 · 31/03/2018 12:19

Oh yes, man flu! My DH always used to get so miserable when he had a cold, he was a nightmare to be around. In fairness to him, he does have asthma, so that does make colds worse. His health has vastly improved since he started to have more exercise; he goes for a lunchtime walk virtually every day he's at work.

Maybe your DH should make lifestyle changes like that?

jedenfalls · 31/03/2018 12:25

I ALWAYS get ill on holiday

My finest hour was getting hospitalised with gallstones the day before our long haul flight.

But it’s always something.

smithsinarazz · 31/03/2018 12:27

I've had a couple of Christmas colds (get to Xmas, body and mind crashes) and DH is only EVER ill under those circumstances.
