Does anyone else's DH always get ill on holiday?

I'm trying my best to be sympathetic I really am. It's a cold, can't be flu as he wouldnt have been walking around all day complaining. I get it's possibly quite a nasty cold but ......... still a cold.

FFS every time we go away .... colds, the shits, nausea .... doesn't sleep well due to 'different' bed.

I feel like a bitch but also feel like I'm on holiday with my grandad, not my DH in his 40s!!

The teens take the piss "dad you really shouldn't go further than the Isle of Wight, that's overseas enough for you'.

I feel it's all about him and he has no awareness that this also spoils our holiday.

I always got ill the first few days of the school holidays when I worked in schools. DH is the same, especially when he's working away for a long period. Our greatest moment was when we got 5 days away together without the kids - I was ill the first 3 days and he was ill the last 3. I think when you let your body relax you get hit with it.

Mine has migraines, they are stress migraines so once he is off he relaxes and here comes a migraine to tarnish any plans. It's annoying but I feel for him.

I tend to get unwell on holiday. It’s either a cold that I pick up (I’m guessing from the aeroplane and the recycled air) and/or a dose of the shits on day 4 of the holiday (I think my body takes time to adjust to different water - not drinking out of the tap but things are cooked it local water, ice cubes in drinks etc)

It’s not fun but I do expect it when I travel and pack the right medicine to see me through.

I had a colleague who was always ill on holiday; she'd return to work full of stories of how ill she'd been. I decided that was her way of destressing, and maybe that's your dh's way too. It's fair enough if it doesn't ruin everyone else's experience.

I'd tell him straight what effect he's having.

mrswarthog · 31/03/2018 14:05

I'm currently on holiday and am ill. It happens pretty much every time we go away and I think it's as PP have said, I work myself into a crash situation.

penguinsandpanda · 31/03/2018 14:15

Mine says he needs a 3 days adjustment period Confused but we worked round this by either going to places with a lot on site so kids and I can have fun whilst he has his grumpy adjustment period. Though have found since if we go to places with wild animals he doesn't need this adjustment period so plan holidays now with wild animals.

DH never spends less than a day in bed ill on any holiday, it’s a family in-joke. One holiday in the US he had strep throat for a few days then broke his collarbone the day before we flew back. Miraculously, if there is an opportunity to play golf he can usually struggle out of his deathbed. Usually a cold/sore throat thing, sometimes his stomach. Similarly if I’m ill at any time he’s usually more ill within 48 hours.

I always get ill on holidays. I'm convinced it's the slowing down.

JessicaJonesJacket · 31/03/2018 14:29

My ex used to be like this. I think it was deliberate tbh. He was going through a selfish arse phase and needed everything to be about him.

I stopped going away with him. Went with the DC and left him at home. After a year or so, he decided he wanted to come along too. Miraculously his 'holiday illnesses' never resurfaced after that. Hmm

UndomesticHousewife · 31/03/2018 14:30

Yes it common for people who are stressed and busy day to day to get ill once they stop and relax so usually on holiday.

Rafflesway · 31/03/2018 14:44

Well I can't put it down to relaxing after work any longer as I'm now retired but I'm the one who gets ill or suffers some catastrophe on holiday every bloody time. 😡

I have had stitches in the USA, wisdom tooth root out in Turkey, rode pillion on a motor bike in Vietnam to a pharmacist for an ear infection, had treatment for a Bartholin cyst in Mexico, broke my nose in China, sprained my wrist in Mauritius, scraped my leg badly in Peru and that's not counting the various colds/flu viruses I have picked up from the plane when visiting numerous other destinations.

One of the first things we do when we arrive anywhere is to identify where nearest good pharmacy, doctor and hospital are. 😂😂😂

Whatsforu · 31/03/2018 14:54

I think you are being a bit harsh he hasn't chosen to be unwell. I am usually the one that becomes unwell, every break from work practically. It's really frustrating but I have no control over it it just happens.

Andmary · 31/03/2018 14:55

Yes, with my exh this always happened. He worked long hours In a stressful field & never went off sick.
As a nurse I knew it wasn’t his fault. It's his immune system that couldnt fight things off any longer. When he relaxesd it hit him all at once and he’d succumb to any prevalent virus.

Andmary · 31/03/2018 14:57

But he also played poor me and pushed it too far.

Jux · 31/03/2018 15:47

I think that people to whom this happens spend a lot of their time flooded with adrenaline and that won't ket them be ill, and when they stop, the adrenaline disappears and viruses etc just dash in!

I do think changes of pace or place will have an effect on your hormones which will affect how you do things and how you approach things, and that has a knock on effect on consequences.

Why that makes some people accident prone I don't know, but I'm sure someone on MN does!

MilkyCoffeeAndSkinnySyrup · 31/03/2018 15:50

My husband is always ill lol

BennySF · 31/03/2018 16:08

It happens to me all the time. I'm ever really sick only when on holiday.
I usually can feel the fatigue and stress build up until the last day at work, I think the body just holds on as much as it can, and when I relax it gets vulnerable.
