First sick day in two years. AIBU?

Have been in my job for two years, it's a dead end minimum wage hell but I work hard. I'm punctual and I've never had a sick day. Last night I was suddenly sick at home. DD had a bug like this recently and wasn't fun.

Anyway. Up all night. Not well. On the rota all day today doing food prep but that's obviously a terrible idea. I called in sick as early as I could (as soon as there was someone there) but have been told it's a busy and they can't cover me.

Aibu to think that's not my fucking problem? And really if they want someone who is infectious preparing food then I should leave anyway? Manager has threatened to take my hours if I don't turn up. I've made it clear I'm in bed and unwell.

I think you need a new employer. You can’t do food prep with D&V.

InspMorse · 30/03/2018 08:50

You need a new job.

How did the conversation end? Are they expecting you to turn up?

QuiteLikely5 · 30/03/2018 08:50

You are completely justified in staying off work!

Just think I could be eating from your place today and you could make me I’ll too Smile

ScreamingValenta · 30/03/2018 08:50

Ridiculous - does your employer want all your customers to come down with the bug too?

InspMorse · 30/03/2018 08:50

BTW YANBU

PerpendicularVincent · 30/03/2018 08:50

You can't possibly be expected to go into work and handle food when You're vomiting. YANBU.

Easy for me to say but I would start looking for a more reasonable employer. I hope you feel better soon Flowers

chickenowner · 30/03/2018 08:51

You're right, it's not your problem that they can't find cover.

HisBetterHalf · 30/03/2018 08:54

If food prep is the role then the cimpany should have a policy relating to illness, D&V etc. Just refer your manager to that. The EHO would take a very dim view of sick employees hamdling dood

HisBetterHalf · 30/03/2018 08:54

*food

RebootYourEngine · 30/03/2018 08:55

If they do take your hours away i think i would look at reporting the business to either trading standards/envirnomental health for poor hygiene standards. How many other employees have went to work sick.

SpiritedLondon · 30/03/2018 08:56

WTF are you expected to do? Stand there with a bucket next to you? Do they all want to catch it? I was in Pret in Waterloo yesterday and the lady serving me was ghostly white. I asked if she was feeling ok and she said she wasn’t. I really felt bad for her but also did not wish to buy food from someone with who knows what illness. The responsible thing from the employer would have been to send her home. You are not working for a nice company.

BunnyEars1 · 30/03/2018 08:57

They obviously don't believe you as it's Good Friday! They probably won't be able to cover the shift so are trying their hardest to make you work.

Hope you feel better soon.

Rainfallrainbow · 30/03/2018 08:58

YADNBU!!! You shouldn’t be in work if you’re suffering from D+V and I’d be tempted to report your employer if they’re trying to suggest otherwise!

As a 6th former, I worked for TGI Friday’s. They were VERY clear that if you had sickness or diarrhea then you were not allowed into work.

ListeningtoBowie · 30/03/2018 08:58

They are being highly unreasonable

confessionofamother · 30/03/2018 09:00

I would get a new job. Then shouldn't be treating you like that.

redexpat · 30/03/2018 09:00

Absolutely not your problem.

Overthinker1 · 30/03/2018 09:01

You can’t go in for 48 hours from last time you were sick if your doing food prep. Do you work for a large company? Give him the food standard agency regulations site and tell him you will be talking to HR or citizens advice of you don’t have one, if he takes any action on you other than a return to work conversation

LifeBeginsAtGin · 30/03/2018 09:03

You can self-certificate yourself off work for the first 7 days of illness. You have notified them as soon as possible which is probably your only responsibility.

If they get funny contact your local env. health team and tell them staff are preparing food whilst unwell.

You are right, staff cover is not your problem.

Get well soon and look for another job.

insancerre · 30/03/2018 09:04

Yanbu
EH would have a field day with your manager
Is it in a pub chain with zero hours?

Goingalonenow · 30/03/2018 09:05

Very large company, we've all signed the kitchen sickness guidelines.

I'm expected in by 9:30am but I've made it clear I'm staying home. Conversation ended with "if you lose all your hours it's on you" sort of thing.

My manager is a dick.

Goingalonenow · 30/03/2018 09:06

Yes pub, yes zero hours.

NewNameADayKeepsSpiesAway · 30/03/2018 09:08

Poor you OP, I think you need to rest up til you feel better then speak to your employer again. If they persist in their attitude explain to them you will be in contact with the local environmental health agency because it’s completely not allowed for a food handling company to have workers suffering from d&v on shift. Hope you feel better soon.

GnotherGnu · 30/03/2018 09:12

If it's a big company, go above your manager's head if he takes your hours away and report him.

WazFlimFlam · 30/03/2018 09:17

That's really shit OP. You are doing the right thing but there's a special place in hell for people who threaten the livelihood of people who are just following the rules.

I would threaten to go straight to your bosses boss and environmental health if they try anything though. And then do it.

Avasarala · 30/03/2018 09:19

You know that if you lose your hours it's because you've called in sick - which is what you need to do when working in food prep. He wants you to ignore the guidelines. Whoever does food hygiene inspections would love to hear that.

Go above his head to HR. They can say you're zero hours but they wouldn't want this going public if they're a big company providing a lot of food, so they won't want you taking them to a tribunal.
