are boring?

OP posts:
rabbleraiser · 10/05/2007 22:30

If you go to the clearance sections of T K Maxx, you can buy stuff (new with tags) much cheaper than the charity shop.

I don't know why I'm banging on about that, really. I can't even remember what the OP's all about

ScottishThistle · 10/05/2007 22:31

I personally think people who have £1000's of debt incredibly boring because they're always wining about money!!!

madamez · 10/05/2007 23:04

Depends. If they're forever banging on about how they budget carefully and use teabags twice, then they may well be pretty boring. If they claim that it's easy to live on a low income but forget to count the fact that they bought their home 10 or more years ago and therefore are paying far less a proportion of their income in housing costs than most people who are either renting, trying to buy or have just managed to buy, then they are annyoingly smug. If they come from a comfortably off family and have always been in regular, properly paid, more-than-minimum wage work, then it's no wonder they are "good" with money as they have never been without a safety net. Boring, maybe, smug ignorant fuckwits, definitely.

rattleskuttle · 10/05/2007 23:10

lol madamez, good post

newlifenewname · 10/05/2007 23:27

I have no money waaaahhhh! waaaahhhhh!
waaahhhhh!

Like that Scottish thistle?

dancingtina · 10/05/2007 23:39

yes, I agree to a certain extent!

I've got a friend who prides herself in having no debt, no credit cards, no nothing. Her fav phrase is 'everything in our house is paid for' - so f'in what!!

Her and her husband never go out, they shop at cheapo clothes shops, her kids don't go to playcentres, she won't come out with me to see a show or go to the zoo with kids etc etc BUT her settee is payed for - well whoopy f'in do!!

My theory is, you only live once, life is for living and (within reason),what's a few debts if you're both in good jobs and have a steady salary coming in.

Should add they earn over £40 grand a year!

I think people who piss their money away and run up loads of debt and then have to struggle for years or boring and very stupid! Better to be boring and have a somewhere to live and food on the table, than struggle everyday and cause yourself stress!

A few debt is fine, I have those
lol

Judy1234 · 11/05/2007 08:58

Some people earn very little and over spend. Some earn very little and try to live within their means. Same with high earners. It's almost unrelated to your income. Some stupid women aren't interested in money and their husband disappears adn they can't even say what pensions or bank accounts or share he has they are that thick! Those types of women need a good shaking. Also it's interesting isn't it? I'd rather rather fill in a tax return than buy a dress any day.

dionnelorraine · 11/05/2007 08:58

I wish I was boring and careful with money! If I could go back 6-7 years ago I would have changed so much. I would be in a better position today and not struggling all the time!

NoodleStroodle · 11/05/2007 09:01

Xenia - nooo please don't say you like filling in a tax return - are you an accountant in RL?

I agree with Xenia - spending within means in unrelated to income but somehow it seems worse for those on low income.

newlifenewname · 11/05/2007 09:20

FFs can we stop making a correlation between debt and stupidity/pissing money up the wall, etc. please?

If I didn't have my period and no money for the rent I wouldn't be so tearful but since I do can you ignoramuses (SP?) STOP?

No one will have as big debts as I do.

For those worried about debt there are ways to cut back. Our nanny is brilliant, most non consumerist person I've ever met - it's wonderful to watch. She'll make the children walk half a mile to save a 50p parking charge.

YOu are being unreasonable. But I do agree.

Idreamofdaleks · 11/05/2007 09:33

Xenia what else does the nanny do that is non-consumerist, I could do with a few more tips!

charliecat · 11/05/2007 09:34

Fio, please fill in a bank charges claim form....!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LieselVentouse · 11/05/2007 09:35

I don't think she's bought any new clothes for 7 years.

Always brings her own food - I've never seen her eat any kind of processed food or drink other than tap water except tea with lemon.

Doesn't have a mobile, computer, internet access, telephone answering service even via BT call minder.

Lovely very old car

Outings for twins things like going out to look at dogs or walking and making dens in the woods - things that don't cost a penny

And she's very good at taking them out without her purse so there's no chance for them to buy say an expensive chocolate muffin at Cafe Nero that might feed a family for a day at the poorer end of the scale.

Hobbies seem to be walking long distances - she'll walk a mile for the exercise sometimes up to this house

It's great to see and different from younger nannies we've had who are more like my teenager early 20s daughters who are more consumerist.

She sounds an absolute gem Xenia

newlifenewname · 11/05/2007 09:42

You don't know what being poor is then Xenia.

Sometimes the debt is so chuffing ridiculous you might as well be dead if you can't treat yourself to things like a nice dinner or a trip on the bus.

There is little joy when having no money is there like a black shadow over everything. Why do you think people with no money spend what they have on drink, drugs and fags or other 'non-essentials'.

I bought £6 silver sandals (before I realised my benefits would be delayed by over 3 months and I'd have nothing). By rights I shouldn't have bought them as I could have bought second hand - and should have done since I live on the benefit minimum amount needed to live on.

However, if I cave in to the reality of not daring to switch on a light because I can't actually afford the electricity to power it, or buying shitty shoes from the charity shop, I swear that will be the day I give up on life.

So fuck you as you watch on in wonder as you experience the prudence similar to that of a poor person Xenia.

Fio - here's wishing black cats your way...

Judy1234 · 11/05/2007 10:08

newlife, of course I have no idea. I never really said I did. Even when I was 22 and trying to pay for full time childcare and work full time and pay a mortgage that wasn't poverty. We certainly never could afford things like orange juice and we cycled everywhere but we had a house and work. We have at times been prepared to work days a week or through the night but we are lucky the work was always there to be done.

The post divorce debt to pay my ex husband all that money might well be over £1m but of course I'm not poor in any sense.

The nanny is just part time after school so not really a proper nanny and she doesn't work every day but I've enjoyed the non consumerism of her.

Other tips... we virtually never eat out. Don't replace clothes until the holes and the repairs to teh holes have worn through. We bought 2 cars which each cost under £900 this year. But I'm obviously playing at this. I earn a lot and we're fine. I'm not like really poor.
