I think that being in the position where you have to worry about money is the most boring thing. So I try not to get there in the first place.

crunchie · 10/05/2007 17:51

Depends what you mean by responsible?? Do you mean it is boring to live within your means, or is it boring to have a savings account, or is it boring not to own a pile of crap and have high credit card bills??

I am not sure what you mean by boring.

I have a pension, a mortgage, shares, savings, kids savings, ofset mortgage against said savings, I read the money section of the gaurdian sometimes, I pay all my bills by DD and have never had outrageous bank charges against me.

Am I boring??

Or how the f**k would youknow if I were??

So in a word your are being v v unreasonanle

I think finally age 37 and a half I have got to grips with this financial stuff and hope to be very boring indeed because I can see it's a damn sight less stressful. The credit card is being paid off this month and will never again be used if it can't be paid off when the bill is due, I don't need to worry about paying for the car tax & MOT when it's due in August, there will have enough money for Christmas & birthdays, and if the boiler blows up it won't be a complete disaster. So boring it may be but I am really looking forward to getting rid of the stress that being in debt causes.

Twiglett · 10/05/2007 18:01

manchester ..

Gobbledigook · 10/05/2007 18:02

Oooh Twig, are you coming ooop north?!

I'm not boring, honest guv!

I could not, however, sleep at night if I was in debt and spending money I didn't have. No way, I would be stressed to the eyeballs - no thanks.

unknownrebelbang · 10/05/2007 18:05

wot twig said throughout.

(Except I will not be on the M1 and M6 tomorrow, although DH may well be).

And I won't be going to Manchester.

Twiglett · 10/05/2007 19:36

yes we are .. big family weekend GDG or I'd have tried to arrange to meet up

am already experiencing the frisson of terror at the thought of keeping my cool in front of entire extended family .. it'll never happen .. it hasn't yet

KathyMCMLXXII · 10/05/2007 19:42

"actually this is one of those crappy 'cool' topics again that we should really have grown out of "

agree with Twiglett.

Gobbledigook · 10/05/2007 19:43

Awwww, boo!!!

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 10/05/2007 20:35

The title was a tongue-in-cheek response to Aitch's 'people shouldn't get their bank charges back' thread. Re-opening it a day later has made it somewhat irrelevant. But do please carry on if you like.

OP posts:
niceglasses · 10/05/2007 20:39

I suppose you wouldn't believe in emotional problems which can lead to problems with money? Is that a lot of ole' bolleaux?

charliecat · 10/05/2007 21:09

Explain niceglasses?

chocolatekimmy · 10/05/2007 21:30

I'm responsible with my money, generally always have been. I have even saved up for things like a new kitchen or a car!

I have had loans in the past though but avoid store cards and always (mostly) pay off my credit card every month - only spending what I know I can afford.

I'm definately not boring - far from it. I have financial freedom, no money worries or stress and will be able to teach my kids a valuable lesson in life by example.

And, once the kids are grown up and left home, think of all the fun I will be having spending all the money I have on me!

newlifenewname · 10/05/2007 21:32

Poor or boring but probably not both.

Nightynight · 10/05/2007 21:32

not sure about boring, but I do remember seeing a tv program about people who were deeply in debt, and couldnt help noticing how well dressed they all were! Evidently those store cards had been put to good use.

newlifenewname · 10/05/2007 21:38

How very dare you!

Could you actually see the labels hanging out of their garments?

I'm well dressed, very deeply in debt but I shop in Primark mostly.

'course, your humility nad pride goes out the window when you are poor - so, certainly wouldn't bother getting dressed up for a TV programme, ohhh no!

rabbleraiser · 10/05/2007 21:46

The curious thing about Aitch's thread yesterday was that many people assumed that those who were good with money had loads of it.

I couldn't see the connection then, and I don't see it now. I earn less in a month (SAHM) then many people spend on a pair of jeans, but I still manage to save some of it.

Agree with Twig .. if that's boring, fine. I'm one dull fucker

expatinscotland · 10/05/2007 21:48

I have given up being more than the bare minimum of responsible with money.

I figure, it's gotten me FA for the past 36 years, it's not like anything's going to change.

Two tears in a bucket, mutha fuck it.

Nightynight · 10/05/2007 21:48

well newlife, at the time, I WAS poor, though not deeply in debt - we had just been on benefits, and I had the usual 2 jeans, 2 t shirts, a few pre-baby clothes wardrobe.

I didnt say they were wearing expensive clothes, just that they were very well dressed!

expatinscotland · 10/05/2007 21:51

Yes, the utter bullshit paradigm that all people who are in debt are like that because they are spendthrifts who blow the lot on frivolity.

And the equally bogus concept that all people on benefits are mooching scroungers who drive primo cars and wear designer clothes.

Yawn.

Complete bollocks, folks.

rabbleraiser · 10/05/2007 21:52

If you go to T K Maxx you can look very well dressed on peanuts.

Nightynight · 10/05/2007 22:10

oh for goodness sake - Im not perpetrating that myth. Just they were there, talking about their thousands of debt on their cards. and they were much better dressed than me.

if you are really poor, buying a garment in a charity shop is a treat that is beyond your reach most of the time, let alone a real shop like TKMaxx.
