Why do men call women Mrs??

My friend is here for a wine and a catch up and she’s texting this guy she met off tinder. He keeps calling her Mrs and it’s starting to grate on her.

“You ok Mrs?”
“What You up to then Mrs?”
“Are you free to FaceTime Mrs?”

Etc.
She made a point of saying “my name is X btw”

But he doesn’t seem to have cottoned on.

Aibu in thinking it’s total wank?
I’d have told him to fuck off by now.

Yanbu, wtaf. Is it supposed to be a dating technique to make her think he's serious about finding a life partner?
If it is, its toss.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 29/03/2018 17:14

It actually makes my skin crawl a bit.

Ew. I hate men like that.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 29/03/2018 17:18

I hope I never have to meet him. I think I’d actually punch him if he called me Mrs Grin

Where I live women call each other Missus equally as often as men do. It's not seen in any way rude or dismissive.

TheFirstMrsOsmond · 29/03/2018 17:21

Somehow he's got the idea it's casual & cheery.
She must disabuse him of this notion.

Anewhope · 29/03/2018 17:21

I think it's a regional dialect thing. It wouldn't bother me either, we say it to other women here like 'how have you been Missus not seen you in ages!' which I think is entirely different to a man saying 'oh the Mrs bought it for me' or something .

same here Confused (I'm a woman by the way)

notacooldad · 29/03/2018 17:23

Everyday parlance in my area.
Women refer to men as Mr.
There's also the 'love, pet, chick, Dear Hun, and mate' greetings thrown in as well.
To be fair we all seem to rub along nicely without getting upset.

However if I was constantly referred to as Mrs in every sentence by the same person it would grate very quickly.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 29/03/2018 17:23

I’ve only ever heard men say it in a condescending way.

Is he from the North East. I've got nothing against men from the NE btw.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 29/03/2018 17:25

South west. I’ve lives in the south west for most of my life and I’ve never heard it in normal conversation.

I call some of my friends and my DD ‘missus’ as a term of endearment!!

StickThatInYourPipe · 29/03/2018 17:26

I call women missus too! So do many of my Male and female friends - maybe it’s a regional thing?

ShortandAnnoying · 29/03/2018 17:26

I call my dog Mrs sometimes, not sure why as she is technically a Miss. It's an honorary Mrs.

ChoccyJules · 29/03/2018 17:27

We use it both ways in Yorkshire, though if he keeps on with it I can see it getting a bit grating.

StickThatInYourPipe · 29/03/2018 17:27

No idea why my phone put a capital on Male and not female! Weird! Confused

UtterlyRainbowed · 29/03/2018 17:27

The other one that grates is Missy. It is just ridiculous and I hate it.

That said I sent him a pic of my friends very cute dog called Missy when he didn't take the hint I sent a dog emoji and woof. He then switched to sweetiepie 😬

YANBU at all.

NC4Now · 29/03/2018 17:28

I sometimes call my female friends Mrs. It’s a term of endearment. I’m northern too.

ShortandAnnoying · 29/03/2018 17:28

The patriarchy!

DarkRoomDarren · 29/03/2018 17:28

I call my dd Mrs and ds Mr. It’s a term of endearment in my family, (we’re from NI fwiw). I never thought of it as condescending.

OhGodWhatTheHellNow · 29/03/2018 17:29

I call my 6yo dd missus, I don't know why. My DF calls me sausage (still! at 52!) which is about as logical

RebootYourEngine · 29/03/2018 17:30

Where i live people call each other missus just like they would call each other dear, love or hun.

LiteraryDevil · 29/03/2018 17:31

I agree: 'Total wank' IMO. He's not got very good conversational skills has he?? I wouldn't date anyone who couldn't converse in a more engaging way than that. He sounds a little immature and not very articulate.

LadyLaSnack · 29/03/2018 17:32

Scotland here. Mrs is very normal between my friend and colleagues.
