I'm never sure if I am supposed to. What's the general rule?

I hate anything involving tipping. It makes me sweat.
I think I'm with you on this. It's quite a stress.

coconuttella · 28/03/2018 22:52

Strongly dislike tips... not only don’t you really know where you stand, but a tipping culture removes the incentive for employers to pay low paid employees well, whilst those employees are at the mercy of public generosity.

In the UK the main supermarkets have a no tipping policy. However since I discovered they are allowed no more time to deliver bagless as bagged I have my deliveries bagged. Not what I'd like ideally but the drivers have to hit delivery targets.

Honeybooboo123 · 28/03/2018 22:54

I'm not English and only found out 6 months ago i should have been tipping my hairdresser. Always tipped in restaurants tho.

I don't tip (ocado user so don't think I can) but I always make a point of writing a positive feedback email when the delivery has gone well. I do sometimes answer the door in my night gown if I have spent the early morning in bed with DS2 so that he stays asleep. U would like to flatter myself to think that that is a tip of sorts but I doubt the poor delivery man feels that way Blush

givemesteel · 28/03/2018 22:55

mumofboys how do you tip dustmen? We have 3 different vans for different types recycling etc, coming at different times?

DisturblinglyOrangeScrambleEgg · 28/03/2018 22:58

I don't like tipping, and the one time I tried (I can't remember why, but there was something the driver had gone well above and beyond on) it was politely refused.

TBH, I'd prefer everyone was paid a living wage, rather than having to rely on tips to make up pay.

Teeniemiff · 28/03/2018 23:00

I don’t, usually because I’ve already paid on a card & rarely carry cash.

I could do with some rules of tipping. I always tip in restaurants 10% if service was good, which is something my dad always does so guess that’s just standard to me but I don’t think I tip in any other areas.
If we have a takeway & I pay with cash I’d say keep the change (if there is any way) but we pay on cars mostly.
Last year we had our sofas cleaned. I paid about £120 & he was here maybe an hour. He made reference to someone else tipping him earlier in the day, & I felt a bit awkward then I didn’t tip him. But I thought it was expensive enough for the time he was here.
Where do you draw the line on when to tip & when not too? We went on holiday to America and everything was tipped.

Which jobs warrant a tip in your estimation, MrsWooster, and which don't?

FoxInABox · 28/03/2018 23:05

I don’t tip the grocery delivery driver or other parcel delivery drivers. I do offer the grocery delivery driver a can drink though. I also just take my bags through from the step myself. At Christmas I tip the postman in a Christmas card, but we do have the same one all year and he is brilliant, sometimes will tip regular delivery drivers at that point too. Always tip takeaway drivers though but only a £1.

TattyCat · 28/03/2018 23:06

givemesteel you beat me to it - I was going to ask the same question!

I don't know whether my team are the same for grey bin/recycling, but they are all so very pleasant that I want to give them a big tip and haven't in 18 months... They are also really lovely to my ddog, and frequently chuck a biscuit at her when she's outside, talking (!) to them Grin

They wave and exchange pleasantries whenever I see them and it's such a refreshing change from what I've been used to previously.

TurquoiseDress · 28/03/2018 23:07

I've never tipped the delivery driver, and they are on the whole lovely and v helpful.

Didn't think it was a thing?!

Always get a different each time so don't feel as if we have a regular one each time.

coconuttella · 28/03/2018 23:07

Where’s the logic in tipping takeaway drivers (if you don’t the MN consensus seems to be that you’re worse than Scrooge) but not tipping grocery delivery drivers?

Onecutefox · 28/03/2018 23:10

My hairdresser cuts my hair for about £45.00 and if she expects a tip then I am sorry. If I start tipping everyone I will not have any money left for my kids.
My friend works at a supermarket earning at the till around £8/hour. Does she need a tip as well? Another friend works at school earning about like £7.50 or so. He doesn't receive any tips either.

pimlicolife · 28/03/2018 23:11

I have only once tipped the delivery driver. That was a couple of weeks ago when he made the delivery in the deep snow. He was delighted.

tessieandoz · 28/03/2018 23:12

I tip

SlothMama · 28/03/2018 23:12

Why should you tip them? Their colleagues within the store won't be getting tips they aren't allowed to accept them or carry cash in their pockets whilst working

CadyHeron · 28/03/2018 23:13

Is that a thing?

No,it's not.

PickAChew · 28/03/2018 23:13

I don't tip but do pay the 40p to have it delivered bagged. If that wasn't possible, I'd direct them to the patio doors and load it all onto the table next to them.

iamyourequal · 28/03/2018 23:14

I tip the grocery delivery man if he is friendly, usually £1.50 or £2. Ditto pizza/take away delivery. I tip my hairdresser 10-15%. I tip 10-15% in restaurants but only if the service is good. I was a waitress when I was a student and I remember what a big difference tips make when you are in a low paid job. That’s why i tip.

AJPTaylor · 28/03/2018 23:18

i thought most grocery delivery drivers arent allowed to take tips?
i tip hairdresser/ kid that shampoos
tip in restaurant if the service is good/ or the staff have done their best and been cheerful.
for bin men, i leave a tin of biscuits on top of the bin (we are in a quiet cul de sac). i figure they could do with a boost with all the running they do.

Twoo · 28/03/2018 23:18

Brie’ my Ocado men accepts tips.

wurlycurly · 28/03/2018 23:21

I tip. Usually £2/3. Ive spent years working in the service industry! These are relatively poorly paid people trying to deliver to tight schedules. I get a cheap delivery slot and that means I gave enough to tip.

wurlycurly · 28/03/2018 23:22

have enough to tip

Fruitcorner123 · 28/03/2018 23:24

The way I see it you are paying for delivery, so no tip as you have put for the service. In a restaurant, for example, you pay for the food but the service is essentially free so you tip the waiting staff for their service and the size of tip reflects the quality of their service.
