I'm never sure if I am supposed to. What's the general rule?

I tipped when we lived in North America as it's more prevalent. But not here. Where I come from no one gets tipped for anything. Think it's easier that way.

Mrsmadevans · 28/03/2018 22:34

I always tip them a quid and 3 quid at Christmas because they are as good as gold and nothing is too much trouble. l don't think they would do anything differently if l didn't tip them but l like to show my appreciation.

HumptyD93 · 28/03/2018 22:34

I never tipped. Ours was always emptied at front door

Astrid2 · 28/03/2018 22:35

I get my shopping delivered without plastic bags so I'd just have to tip everything out all over my hall floor and carry it through individually to the kitchen. That seems mental when the driver can walk 15 steps through the living room into the kitchen and I can unpack it onto the table! They never seem bothered and are always polite.

I hate tipping culture too. I never tip taxis, hairdresser, delivery people! Only occasionally tip in restaurants if I have change which is almost never.

Lacucuracha · 28/03/2018 22:36

If you're expecting food to be delivered to your kitchen, then it would be nice to tip.

It's a hard job for low wages.

yumyumpoppycat · 28/03/2018 22:37

No to grocery deliveries but yes to pizza - although we had a pizza delivery person who laughed (in a friendly way) at my £1 tip - not sure if that means I shouldn't tip or should tip more !

AnnieAnoniMouser · 28/03/2018 22:37

I don’t tip.

I pay for my shopping, I pay for delivery. The supermarket pays their staff accordingly. Ditto Pizza, Chinese food etc.

The more we tip, the less they pay. People should not be relying on tips to make their wages acceptable to them. If they’re not being paid enough, that needs to change.

2cats2many · 28/03/2018 22:37

I don't tip supermarket delivery people or takeaway delivery people. I always tip in restaurants, taxis, nice bars and hair dressers.

I have no idea where or when i picked up that set of tipping rules. Or indeed why.

Astrid2 · 28/03/2018 22:37

And they always wipe their feet on the mat! I'm not that unreasonable to make them remove their shoes.

theeyeofthestormchaser · 28/03/2018 22:38

Our Tesco delivery men come to the kitchen door. They are fabulous. But i don’t tip them. Never occurred to me.

Lacucuracha · 28/03/2018 22:38

People lack empathy.

Restaurant delivery people are also very poorly paid. No harm in tippimg a £1.

KnittingOnEmpty · 28/03/2018 22:43

I don't understand tipping hairdressers. I sometimes do, sometimes don't and never sure what i'm supposed to do.

Waitedtoolong · 28/03/2018 22:45

Never tip when my Tesco order arrives, although I gave the driver a tin of biscuits to take back to the depot at Christmas because all the drivers ate unfailingly cheerful.

Waitedtoolong · 28/03/2018 22:45

MrsFogi · 28/03/2018 22:47

No tipping here - I don't want to end up like America!

Inthedeepdarkwinter · 28/03/2018 22:47

It's not like supermarket delivery people are the only ones delivering things to your door, though, are they? I probably have 3 or 4 deliveries a week between them, Amazon and other stuff. I wouldn't start tipping them all for delivering the things I've ordered. A supermarket delivery costs additional money, that's the point!

MumofBoysx2 · 28/03/2018 22:47

No but we always give £20 each at Christmas to delivery drivers/dustmen/postmen/window cleaners etc. Year round we don't tip any of them (well we give the gardener lunch, he's happy with that!)

MumofBoysx2 · 28/03/2018 22:49

I always give the hairdresser and beautician a tip

Eveforever · 28/03/2018 22:49

I didn't know this was a thing either! I would, if I had a regular delivery person, give them something at Christmas, if I could afford it! I used to tip taxi drivers, I now, rightly or wrongly, think they're that expensive that I shouldn't need to tip as well. I guess if they did something exceptional, such as helping me with something heavy, I still would, but generally no.

viccat · 28/03/2018 22:49

I never tip the Ocado delivery person, and have read somewhere (probably here...) they are not permitted to take tips anyway.

I do tip take away delivery people though because I assume most get paid minimum wage if that...

PrettyLittIeThing · 28/03/2018 22:49

No I don't let them in my house, the thought of having to make small talk with a stranger stood in my house fills me with dread! Always at the door. (I am socially awkward.)

givemesteel · 28/03/2018 22:49

I never tip either, only exception being when I got a delivery during the recent snow as I felt sorry for him working under dangerous conditions (I tried to cancel when I knew it was going to be that bad but was too late).

Already paying about £5 on average for delivery so a tip on top starts to get expensive,as I would feel embarrassed giving a grown man £1, so I'd feel I'd have to give at least £3.

Dont tip takeaway deliveries either as they usually get lost despite clear instructions and I've found tipping them doesn't make any difference.

Do tip hairdressers and in restaurants as well though, always.

littlepill · 28/03/2018 22:50

NEver tip here, either! No need!

Honeybooboo123 · 28/03/2018 22:51

Wow so the consensus is no. We only get Ocado deliveries so if they aren't allowed to accept then theres no guilt.
I ask them to drop at front door, DH gets them to trudge all the way to the kitchen...

I only ordered shopping online once and didn't tip! The man brought the shopping into the living room as he had it in a box and didn't want to hand it to me. He left dirt on my new door mat.
I don't usually tip for pizza delivery although I used to. Once a pizza delivery guy said 'ah it's freezing, you took ages to answer the door' - I think he was hinting for a tip!
That's the other thing I hate the way they knock on the door instead of ringing the doorbell. If you have kids in bed either don't be so selfish to order takeaway, wait by the window so you can get to the door before the driver rings your bell or put a note on the bell/ door to ask the driver to knock, not ring the bell and wake kids. That's my opinion on that!
I hate the tipping culture as well. In Japan it is considered rude to tip as it may suggest you had low expectations.
I went to a bar and bought 2 bottles of beer for my friends and the card machine asked if I wanted to tip. I pressed yes before I could think and I thought what the hell am I doing!
