Mis led on what new car can do, WWYD?

I was fed up with only being able to connect one phone to thr Bluetooth in my car, so when. I was buying my new one, I made to sure ask how many phones you can have connected. I was told 5. Great. Collected car on Sunday.

Turns out that while you can pair up to 5 phones with the car, only one can be used at any time. This is no good to me as I have 2 phones I need to be able to make and receive calls on when I’m driving.

Dealership are just saying it is what it is, and I guess that’s true, but I’m left with a car that fundamentally doesn’t meet my needs.

What would you do? What do you think my options are?

If you pair both phones will it not automatically pick up which ever one rings ?

DebbieFiderer · 27/03/2018 20:31

Does it not have the ability to switch between paired phones on the move? With mine it can only be actively paired with one at a time but if I need to answer a call on the other one I can use a voice command to switch phones and answer the call.

Fattymcfaterson · 27/03/2018 20:31

Tbh, unless you specifically asked how many could pair at the same time I don't think you can complain really

WorriesamdTerfly, it's fine to take calls when driving if using Bluetooth and it sounds like this is the issue for the OP. Many people need to take important calls when driving, don't be daft.

Gizlotsmum · 27/03/2018 20:33

Tricky. Technically it does what you asked unless you explained you needed it to be able to link to 2 phones at the same time and answer either of them (i’m not sure that is possible).

nokidshere · 27/03/2018 20:33

I can pair 5 phones to my car also but have to switch between them manually. It sounds to me like you didn't ask the right questions.

How many phones can you pair up
is not the same as
How many phones can be used simultaneously

SandyDenny · 27/03/2018 20:34

Could you set one phone to divert to the other

Hands free Bluetooth is legal isn't it?

HermioneWeasley · 27/03/2018 20:34

Apparently it doesn’t have the ability to easily switch between the two - you have to disconnect one and pair the other which obviously I can’t safely do on the move.

Are there any cars (or bluetooth systems) that can have more than one phone connected to them at the same time?

blueskyinmarch · 27/03/2018 20:36

I have a high spec car which can pair with a number of phones but only one at a time. I don't think any can link to more than one at once. My DH has two phones and chooses to link his work one when driving.

tenbob · 27/03/2018 20:37

I have 2 phones, so set my work one to divert all calls to my personal one, and then pair my personal one

If you have an iPhone, it's very easy to set an auto call forward and then turn it off afterwards

sandy hadn’t thought of divert - that’s a good idea, thanks

Am I really the only person who thinks that “connected” means “able to use”? I didn’t realise. Lesson learned I guess.

Forward all calls from phone B to Phone A while driving

pigsDOfly · 27/03/2018 20:39

Completely missing the point of the thread, but all that faffing between phones while driving doesn't sound ideal.

Sounds like a driver wouldn't be concentrating on driving if they're switching between phones and making and taking calls on both.

Wouldn't that be considered driving without due care?

pestov · 27/03/2018 20:39

It's not the car, but a limitation of Bluetooth technology. YABU

HermioneWeasley · 27/03/2018 20:39

Thanks everyone for your help. I thought I’d seen colleagues having 2 phones paired, but maybe they had it diverted?

OP posts:
Bumdishcloths · 27/03/2018 20:45

Car drives from A to B - meets your needs. It's the Bluetooth that doesn't. Use the divert function and pair one phone only.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 27/03/2018 20:45

If your purchase of a very expensive item is dependant on this particular feature you really should have done your research. YABU to have expected an 'honest' answer from a car salesman.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 27/03/2018 20:47

Oh and an easy answer to your problem is a dual sim phone.

Duck90 · 27/03/2018 20:56

ollennaswimple my car can take calls from either of my 2 phones. Although the “second” one only shows the number calling rather than the programmed name.

specialsubject · 27/03/2018 20:58

It is legal.

Remember those eight poor people killed in a minibus crash between two lorries? The rear lorry driver was on a hands free call .

Cannonfodder · 27/03/2018 20:58

I have an 11 plate s max titanium sport, system integrated with sat nav/ rear view camera etc. It pairs 2 at a time - potentially more. If dh and I are in the car, for example, it automatically picks up either phone. I was most surprised when dhs newer and more high end Volvo couldn’t do the same. Odd that newer cars aren’t doing this. Possibly legislative?

bearbehind · 27/03/2018 20:58

but I’m left with a car that fundamentally doesn’t meet my needs.

This made me laugh- I'm not sure how the telephone function in a car not being what you expected means the vehicle 'fundamentally fails to meet your needs' 😂

As others have said, however many phones can be paired, only 1 can work at a time.
