AIBU to feel it’s wrong to stop searching for Corrie McKeague

I just heard on the news that the police have decided to stop looking for Corrie McKeague, despite the evidence that he could very well be buried in the land fill state where the bin van left its load. The case will now be a cold case, instead of an active one.
It’s a tragic situation for his family, especially his new baby.
Police budgets apart, Why is it ok to spent millions on certain missing person cases, and not on another?

Because other cases have active leads to follow. There’s nothing left here that can be sensibly done. It’s awful for his family, but that’s not a reason to keep the case open.

DILLIGAFF · 26/03/2018 14:02

I thought that the landfill had been searched?

Phosphorus · 26/03/2018 14:03

Thousands of people are mussing in England alone.

No one us looking for them, nor will they without active leads.

The guy probably got himself into the bin, no foul play has ever been seriously suggested, it would be mad to keep looking.

Chocolala · 26/03/2018 14:03

They did conduct a huge search. But they can’t search it all, so eventually called time on the search.

LittleRedTerfette · 26/03/2018 14:03

Where do you suggest they go next with no leads Left?

SavageBeauty73 · 26/03/2018 14:04

They have been doing a huge search for ages. But funds aren't unlimited.

Terribly sad for the family.

CoolCarrie · 26/03/2018 14:04

Have the police searched all of the dump site? Bloody awful job, but it’s the one place that there is a good chance he is! If he was my son I would be searching there every day.

OP posts:
Aprilmightmemynewname · 26/03/2018 14:05

When he first went missing I read that he was seen leaving a late night shop with 2 ready meals. Hardly the plans of a suicidal man as suggested today.
Poor dc he will never meet and his dp. His family must be stuck in an awful limbo.

Curtainshopping · 26/03/2018 14:08

I’m sure no one wants to give up but you have to draw a line at some point and the police have done everything they can.

Joleney · 26/03/2018 14:09

Tonnes more has been spent searching for him than is ever spent searching for most missing people.

Plus, it's pretty much accepted that he's passed away. Wouldn't the money they have be better spent searching for people who might still be alive?

Curtainshopping · 26/03/2018 14:10

If he was my son I would be searching there every day.

Every parent would feel like that but in reality, it’s not practical or safe. There are trucks and diggers shifting the rubbish and bringing more - it’s an active landfill site.

insancerre · 26/03/2018 14:11

Very sad but there isn't the money

Nicknacky · 26/03/2018 14:11

I think if all active enquiry has been exhausted then rightly it should be wound down. If new leads come in then they will be investigated. I know of other long term missing people who disappeared around the same time who have had no where near the same investigation or money spent on it.

PalePinkSwan · 26/03/2018 14:12

They’ve done everything they can. If any new evidence comes up it will become live again.

There will also be periodic cold case reviews to check if there’s anything else that could be tried.

It’s poibtlsss to keep spending time and money now, when nothing more can be done.

www.cambridge-news.co.uk/news/cambridge-news/corrie-mckeague-investigation-closed-police-14457070

This seems like a fairly thorough summary of the facts and FAQ provided by the Police about this case

ShatnersWig · 26/03/2018 14:15

How long does one go on searching for a body in a site? It's highly likely to be there but there is still the chance it isn't. Why should the Police continue to search and spend even more time and money on this when there are very recent missing person's cases probably desperately in need of resourcing where they may still be alive?

There is much that could be said (and has, in some quarters) about the actions of certain family members at the start of this investigation which did NOT assist the Police; in fact one who should have known better most certainly hampered the investigation.

19lottie82 · 26/03/2018 14:19

The police stated if any credible leads come up in the future then they will pursue them, but at the moment there’s none. What do you expect them to do?

It makes you wonder if they have an idea what happened to Madeline McCann, but just can’t prove it?

ShatnersWig · 26/03/2018 14:24

19lottie Let's not go down THAT particular avenue of spending either...

19lottie82 · 26/03/2018 14:26

Why not? It’s a discussion forum isn’t it? And this is a thread about a police investigation into a missing person?

I’m not meaning to open a can of worms, but it’s a general question in regards to if money is kept being thrown at a case, does that mean they have credible leads?

ShatnersWig · 26/03/2018 14:29

19lottie I'll PM you

lostjanni · 26/03/2018 14:35

I think the madeleine mccann. case should be closed if this one is and handed over to a cold case team.
All the reasons stated are the same...
No evidence / leads
Not enough money to fund the investigation

Even worse is Maddy went missing yonks ago but we ;must' keep searcing. This guy served his country and we're going to abandon the search for him. I think it is a disgrace.

HollyBayTree · 26/03/2018 14:35

Interesting case this one . Much much more to it than meets the eye. He was a bit of lad wasnt he? Not popular with his peers, someone has quite literally got away with murder. I wonder if it will ever all come out or whether it will remain one of those things that never come out.

JaneEyre70 · 26/03/2018 14:37

I think that given the fact that the Police are fairly sure what happened to him, the investigation could be concluded. It's pretty heartless to think of someone's body rotting in a landfill site - however, the guy was drunk, it was an accident and this could cost millions. Seems the wrong choice either way, to be honest.

ShatnersWig · 26/03/2018 14:37

Holly You appear to know something the Police don't. Perhaps you'd like to call them so they can solve it, I'm sure they'd love to hear from you.

Nicknacky · 26/03/2018 14:37

holly There is nothing to suggest murder. The police have been clear on that.
