AIBU to feel it’s wrong to stop searching for Corrie McKeague

I just heard on the news that the police have decided to stop looking for Corrie McKeague, despite the evidence that he could very well be buried in the land fill state where the bin van left its load. The case will now be a cold case, instead of an active one.
It’s a tragic situation for his family, especially his new baby.
Police budgets apart, Why is it ok to spent millions on certain missing person cases, and not on another?

@Shanterswig, that is like the maddy case but oh no must keep spending millions to search for her, but not a serviceman.

ChaosNeverRains · 26/03/2018 14:38

The difference between this and other cases though is that in other cases there is likely to have been some other involvement iyswim, as such investigations will always be ongoing in case there are future victims as well, if that makes sense.

With regards to this one, the authorities say they are not looking for third parties and no fowl play is suspected. As such it is believed that he took his own life. Absolutely devastating for his family of course, but even if they find him it’s unlikely that will bring the answers or closure that they would be seeking sadly, and as yet all attempts to find him have failed which might imply that he didn’t want to be found. Sad.

Nicknacky · 26/03/2018 14:39

lost The circumstances aren’t comparable. And she was Madeline, not Maddie.

ButternutCrinkleFries · 26/03/2018 14:40

shatners what were the actions of some family members? I can’t seem to find any information on what was said at the beginning.

ShatnersWig · 26/03/2018 14:41

lost Sorry, but while I agree no more money should now be spent on the McCann case, the two cases are rather different.

I don't see people campaigning for the Police to dig up the whole of Saddleworth Moor to try and find the body of poor Keith Bennett and he was most definitely murdered, which is almost certainly not the case with Corrie.

HollyBayTree · 26/03/2018 14:42

shatners only from the interviews his mother has repeatedly given - would you like me to send all the media links to them? I know they have a reputation for being inept and missing something, but I feel the mother in this case, has been right on their case, given she's one herself.

DerelictWreck · 26/03/2018 14:43

despite the evidence that he could very well be buried in the land fill

But they've searched the landfill site and concluded he's not there?

Why is it ok to spent millions on certain missing person cases, and not on another

They have spent millions on this - £2.1m to be exact

ShatnersWig · 26/03/2018 14:44

Butternut His mum used to work for the Police but she chose not to disclose information about his lifestyle and behaved in a way that hampered the inquiry in the early stages.

Nicknacky · 26/03/2018 14:44

holly Regardless of what his mother thinks, there has never been anything to suggest murder.

And her being a cop doesn’t mean much, to be honest.

ShatnersWig · 26/03/2018 14:45

Holly No, I've seen them all. And the Police have investigated. There is no evidence he was murdered.

Nicknacky · 26/03/2018 14:46

derelict From the faq the police have said they have searched the area he is thought to be in but it’s not impossible that he is elsewhere and it is far to vast to search the rest as intensively as it would take years.

Chocolala · 26/03/2018 14:47

They’ve searched part of the landfill but such a search isn’t easy and so there is always a chance that either 1. They missed something. Or 2. He ended up in a different part of the landfill.

We can’t dig through the whole of a landfill site, active or otherwise.

lostjanni · 26/03/2018 14:48

@NickNacky, she was actually Madeleine if we're going to nit pick, however i shortended it to maddy to make it easier to type. So maybe you shoud make sure you're correct before you 'try' correct.

Nicknacky · 26/03/2018 14:49

lost My apologies for not googling to ensure I had the exact correct spelling. Just felt that was more respectful than calling her by a name that wasn’t hers, unlike yourself.

ShatnersWig · 26/03/2018 14:50

lost The point was correct, even if the spelling was not, her parents ask people not to call their daughter by a shortened form.

lostjanni · 26/03/2018 14:52

@Nicknacky, i did call her the correct name at the start of my post. It's more respectful yes to use her full name all the way through the post but then it as easier to type maddy. If this has somehow offended you then sorry. Smile

BumpowderSneezeonAndSnot · 26/03/2018 14:52

It's an expensive waste of resources they have exhausted all their leads and it makes sense it's gone to cold case

peacheachpearplum · 26/03/2018 14:53

They spent months searching the part of the site that was in use at the time. They must have reasons for thinking it was suicide so not looking for a live person. How much can be spent looking for a dead body when we haven't got enough money to care for the living?

MyKingdomForBrie · 26/03/2018 14:53

Suffolk Constabulary have spent more than £2.1 million investigating McKeague's disappearance, making it one of the most expensive missing persons investigations that the force has conducted

They just can’t keep spending money that isn’t there. From what I’ve read they seem pretty certain that he is at the identified landfill. It’s absolutely tragic but money is finite.

JesusTapdancingChrist · 26/03/2018 14:53

Why should it matter that he was a serviceman?

His actions suggest he was an irresponsible, binge-drinking idiot who had a habit of making very poor decisions and one of these resulted in him losing his life.

100% right to shut the investigation down at this point.

lalalalyra · 26/03/2018 14:55

Why is it ok to spent millions on certain missing person cases, and not on another?

They have spent millions on this one.

HollyBayTree · 26/03/2018 14:57

And the Police have investigated. There is no evidence he was murdered.

To coin an old expression, the police dont seem to know shit from clay in this investigation. If they did, they might have some leads or have a smidgeon of an idea what happened. Without a body, or a witness, or any other forensic evidence, they wont know one way or another.

He may or may not be dead
He may or may not have been murdered
He may or may not have kipped in a rubbish bin
He may or may not have committed suicide (according to this mornings round up)
He may or may not have deliberately gone AWOL

Nicknacky · 26/03/2018 14:59

They are clear that no other person entered the area that he was seen to go into. They would have had to be the invisible man.

Bundlesmads · 26/03/2018 14:59

Some of the rubbish from the landfill went into an incinerator so it’s possible there are no remains to be found.

His father is a fucking disgrace making those comments about killing himself because his girlfriend was pregnant. Poor child having to grow up and read that. Don’t think anybody comes out of this mess well.

HollyBayTree · 26/03/2018 14:59

JesusTapdancingChris harsh but ultimately what I was thinking
