AIBU regarding Nursery Fees

SilentEm564 · 26/03/2018 11:39

DH and I recently went to view a nursery.
We were told it would be £250 per week for DS to attend 3 days a week.
We thought it sounded like a lot of money! I was more hoping for £200 for 4 days.
We picked it because it was the nearest one to our house, so nothing spectacular about it.
We live just outside of London.
Would some other posters mind sharing how much nursery costs for them please? I'm now left wondering if my original cost expectations were unreasonable? It's hard to judge because a lot of nurseries don't put fees on their websites.

Our bill for this month was £960 for 4 days a week (4week month) I'm in the SE so for London prices yours doesn't sound too far off.

stateschool · 26/03/2018 11:42

£55 a day. Great nursery in expensive part of country. Included all organic meals, made on premises from scratch, and nappies - they used an eco brand. That's still bloody expensive if you add it up and throw in a sibling paying the same.

GinaLinetti99 · 26/03/2018 11:43

We paid £975 a month full time, up until late last year. We got a discount for DD being full time.

pastabest · 26/03/2018 11:43

I never actually took up the nursery place because my circumstances changed meaning I didn't need it but when I looked into it last year it was £52 a day in my area which is in the north of England and not particularly affluent.

I would therefore expect London prices to be quite a bit more

elliejjtiny · 26/03/2018 11:45

We used to pay £30 a day for ds. That was in 2009 though so prices have probably gone up. My friend pays £100 a day for 2 DC, we are in the south west.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 26/03/2018 11:45

The nursery I worked in was £90 a day (in essex commuter land)

MiniAlphaBravo · 26/03/2018 11:45

£60 a day. SE. Doesn’t include nappies. It’s slightly less for older children as ratios are higher so depends on age of your dc. Our nursery does have an outstanding rating from ofsted but we aren’t in a posh area.

TurquoiseTarn · 26/03/2018 11:45

I live in the North West, we were paying £860 a month for full time/5 days a week. It was a great nursery, had Outstanding with Ofsted.

SilentEm564 · 26/03/2018 11:46

@Dinosaursdontgrowontrees £90 a day!

The price I mentioned was for under 3 years old, I understand they go down a bit when they're older.

£13 for 3 hours here. Kent

QuiteLikely5 · 26/03/2018 11:49

Ask them full time costs often it’s more expensive when only doing part time

SellFridges · 26/03/2018 11:50

£1050 for full time in Birmingham. Works out about £48 a day. Goes down when 30 hours kicks in but I’m not certain by how much as it’s all amortised.

onemoreshotofcoffee · 26/03/2018 11:51

Central London
Ofsted rated as outstanding
£82 a day

willisurvive3under2 · 26/03/2018 11:51

£50 a day including nappies, milk and food. It's a little cheaper if you go full time. SW England.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 26/03/2018 11:51

£48 a day, West Midlands

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 26/03/2018 11:51

Yes it was very expensive. Should of said that was for a baby.. think it went down a little for older children.

How old is your child? Does the nursery do the 15/ 30 hours free for 3 yr olds? That would make a big difference once they get that.

PiggyPoos · 26/03/2018 11:52

£50 a day for me no nappies included and they charge for bank holidays and a week at Christmas when they are shut

Other places £55+ but some include nappies or don't charge for holidays

PiggyPoos · 26/03/2018 11:53

We are in Wales, if seems a LOT more expensive in London and outskirts.

PatchworkElmer · 26/03/2018 11:55

£50 a day for DS (in Eastern England). Includes all meals, but not nappies or wipes.

Mildura · 26/03/2018 11:55

£918 a month for 3 days a week, works out to about £75/day.

We're in Surrey.

SilentEm564 · 26/03/2018 11:55

Thank you everyone.
The regional differences is quite large.

@Dinosaursdontgrowontrees DS will be starting at age 9/10 months so the free hours won't kick in for a while yet.

I think I'd better speak to a few more places and work out what we can afford. I can really see how it can be cheaper to stay at home then go back to work, especially with 2 or more kids!

I live in Yorkshire and pay £45.50 a day (7.30am-6pm) or £28.00 (7.30am-1pm) for morning session and £26.50 (1-6pm) for afternoon sessions. If you take child in at 9am until 3pm you still pay for a full day but there are playgroups locally that run 9-12 or 12-3 for £16 a session so depends if you need a playgroup for school hours or a more flexible daycare nursery for working hours. Try to speak to other parents as you catch them leaving to find out what they think of the setting for honest opinions. Good luck in finding the right place.

Mumathon · 26/03/2018 11:55

£52 a day, East Anglia. Includes all food, nappies, resources etc.

LyndaSnellsFeet · 26/03/2018 11:57

I pay £53 per day in London, including food but not including nappies and wipes.

Gudgyx · 26/03/2018 11:57

Central Scotland and I'm 670 a month for 3 days a week. The daily rate goes down the more days they are in. Thank god for childcare vouchers!
