AIBU regarding Nursery Fees

SilentEm564 · 26/03/2018 11:39

DH and I recently went to view a nursery.
We were told it would be £250 per week for DS to attend 3 days a week.
We thought it sounded like a lot of money! I was more hoping for £200 for 4 days.
We picked it because it was the nearest one to our house, so nothing spectacular about it.
We live just outside of London.
Would some other posters mind sharing how much nursery costs for them please? I'm now left wondering if my original cost expectations were unreasonable? It's hard to judge because a lot of nurseries don't put fees on their websites.

North east £44 per day under 2, £40 over 2.

dentydown · 26/03/2018 12:00

I pay 56 pounds a day for a baby room place. My daughter only goes one day a week. Meals are included but I have to provide nappies.

Gudgyx · 26/03/2018 12:01

In fact, I tell a lie, I'm only 570 a month for 3 days

fleetingthinker · 26/03/2018 12:02

£62 per day, need to send nappies. South london, pretty standard and a massive out going.

GeekyBlinders · 26/03/2018 12:04

Rural Oxfordshire, £50 per day, but that's a lot cheaper than my Oxford city friends pay - £70 a day plus food is closer to the norm. I'd expect the charge to rise the closer you get to London, so while £250 per 3 day week is a horrific amount, I don't think it's out of the ordinary.

GeekyBlinders · 26/03/2018 12:05

We provide nappies and wipes too but I don't mind that as it means the brand I prefer gets used.

IAmADancer · 26/03/2018 12:09

I have twins, they go three days a week and it’s £1300 a month. I live in the South East. Childcare is very expensive, I’d say what I earn goes pretty much all on childcare.

ItchyKondera · 26/03/2018 12:09

Bucks / Herts area - £56 per day or £52 per day if full time
doesn't include nappies but includes everything else

dayandnightshapes · 26/03/2018 12:11

South west £48 a day 8-6 for 1-2 year old
£44 for 2-3 year old
Pre school funding for 3 and above £6.50 a day top up.

Yours sounds very OTT. I would expect to pay £60 max which I did in my previous nursery but that included nappies and food etc

Alannahpickaver · 26/03/2018 12:11

We pay £41 a day all meals included but we provide nappies and milk. We are in the South West.

reluctantbrit · 26/03/2018 12:11

SE London/Kent border. I paid over £1000/months for an under 2 year place for everything excl. nappies/wipes.

The nursery was the only one in walking distance to a train station to Central London who took under-one year olds so they knew they had an advantage. Since then two other nurseries opened and prices stayed put where they normally would increase each calendar year and are now all three are roughly in line .

A childminder costs around £5-6/hour in our area.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 26/03/2018 12:13

Around here (East London) it varies from about £55 to £65 a day, including food etc but not nappies. I know of two that charge what yours is asking, but one is open from 7am to 7pm, and the other includes ballet class, rugby, swimming, magical sensory journeys and sign language for the babies etc.

greenyblue · 26/03/2018 12:14

About £42 for a full day including lunch but not nappies. Eastern.

MinnieMouse7 · 26/03/2018 12:14

£56 a day here in Cambridgeshire. Nappies, formula and wipes have to be provided by me.

GruffaloPants · 26/03/2018 12:14

I paid £100 per week for 3 days (for a 3/4yo). Included meals and snacks, but not nappies. Large UK city nowhere near London.

Shredtheevidence · 26/03/2018 12:14

Account for cost increases as well. Over the nearly 3 years dd has been in my daily rate has gone up £6.50/hour!

Twickerhun · 26/03/2018 12:15

£52 a day in london commuterville for an excellent childminder.

Shredtheevidence · 26/03/2018 12:15

I mean £6.50/far. Still pretty painful over a month x

cadburyegg · 26/03/2018 12:16

Eastern England, it was £72 a day up until my DS turned 3 and now it’s £62 a day.

Shredtheevidence · 26/03/2018 12:16

Per day. Bloody he'll.

WorldofTofuness · 26/03/2018 12:17

Some nurseries split costs by age of child (younger more expensive as higher staffing needed). Also need to take into account length of day (although the hourly cost is actually less outside of core ours at DD's).

We are inner London, historically quite a poor area but getting more MC. 3 days/wk £700 for 9-5, just under £900 for 8-6, no distinction by age; all food provided, re-usable nappies.

StarkintheSouth · 26/03/2018 12:19

Hideously expensive -live in Essex commuter town and we pay £1300 pcm for 5 days per week including food/milk but not nappies/wipes. It is a wonderful nursery, DD loves it and the location and opening hours perfect for our jobs but god we are cash strapped as a result.

ConciseandNice · 26/03/2018 12:21

Have you thought about a childminder? We're on our fifth kid and our childminder is £4 per hour and is someone really special. I can't believe we went with nurseries for so long.

KitKat1985 · 26/03/2018 12:23

DD1 (3) we have to pay £48 a day. For DD2 (1) she's still in the baby area so it's £55 a day. That includes all meals and snacks but not nappies. We're in the South East.

Merryhobnobs · 26/03/2018 12:23

Just over £600 a month for 3 full days a wek near Dundee. Includes 3 hot meals a day plus 2 substantial snacks, opening 7.30am-6.30pm. We provide nappies and wipes. They provide any formula you specify or milk. The nursery do a really good variety of activities and have an amazing location which enables a lot of outdoor time. It is expensive but our DD loves it and we are 100% happy with the care she receives and her having a hot tea means that we can come home and have a nice calm bedtime routine.
