DS4 is 7 (yr2). He fell while running in the playground and cut his head open above his eyebrow. I get a call from the school saying he may need hospital treatment and would I come and collect him. When I get there he is sitting outside reception, unaccompanied. His head is completely bandaged as is one eye. His white shirt is red with blood. I go over to him before going to the desk and talk to him for about 30 seconds to a minute before a receptionist asks if she can help. DS is disoriented and ask her to call an ambulance. "I don't think there is any need for that!" She says "it would be quicker if you take him yourself" I ask again for an ambulance explaining that his altered mental state concerns me and if he deteriorates in the back of the car while driving to the hospital I am helpless. She begrudgingly calls one. DS need 9 stitches to close the wound and was kept in overnight for observation. I have 2 AIBUs.

  1. AIBU to think someone should have called an ambulance before calling me? He had a cut the length of his eyebrow and gaping. He wasnt behaving normally.
  2. As no ambulance was called. Shouldn't someone have been sat with him in reception? Obviously the receptionists weren't keeping an eye on him or they would have noticed me sooner.
Fortunately DS is OK and back home but I can't help thinking it could have been worse. I will go in on Monday and find out why no one called an ambulance but I just want to know if IABU before going in all guns blazing.

YANBU for either. They should have phoned an ambulance or atleast phoned you and said he is bad would you like them to phone an ambulance or come take him yourself.
They really should not have left him unattended at all. I would be making a big complaint over that.

MyBoysAndI · 24/03/2018 09:50

Don't think an ambulance was necessary just for the cut but for altered mental state then l do feel one should have been called.

They probably weren't aware of his deterioration which is a concern

DoveBlue · 24/03/2018 09:50

Head injuries can be really serious. I would not be happy at a 7 yr old being left alone as such in these circumstances. I would also be unimpressed with a non medical person questioning me requesting an ambulance when you as parent are the responsible person for the child.

Gileswithachainsaw · 24/03/2018 09:52

Yanbu.

As you say if deteriorated in the car you would have been in trouble especially as you were alone.

He should have been better supervised to. Agree on both counts.

I hope your ds is ok Flowers

ChasedByBees · 24/03/2018 09:53

YANBU at all.

aaaaargghhhhelpme · 24/03/2018 09:53

I would be concerned after a head injury he was left unattended.

Less serious accidents have been treated with more care at my dcs school.

I would ask to see their accident report and go through their processes. Hope your Ds feels better Flowers

Head injuries are potentially serious, due to the risk of concussion.
Anyone with a head injury showing signs of disorientation etc has potentially got concussion or worse. And their actions show a serious disregard for your ds welfare.
I would be asking to see the accident book and be asking to see the details of the first aider who treated him and considering a formal complaint.

YANBU

Blaze away

Hope he’s better soon.

ourkidmolly · 24/03/2018 09:55

Altered mental state is an immediate ambulance call. Appalling first aid training. As for leaving him alone? Words fail me.
My nephew hit his head on a post in the playground. An ambulance wasn't called for him either despite altered mental stare. He had a bleed in the brain and was in hospital for several days after an operation. Much sharper first aid needs to be in place in some schools.

Ilovecamping · 24/03/2018 09:55

I would have expected someone to be sat with him after sustaining a head injury, as changes in behaviour can happen very quickly. If he had been monitored properly and the changes noticed an ambulance should have been called. I wouldn't go in all guns blazing better to be calm and lethal. Hope he recovers well.

BlondeB83 · 24/03/2018 09:56

YANBU, I am a teacher and we would have called 999.

AstridPeth · 24/03/2018 10:00

I work in a school and this is def not acceptable. Your poor Ds should not have been left alone for 1 minute with a head wound that clearly needed stitches. That; alongside the disorientation and altered alertness is extremely serious. As others have suggested you need to go in on Monday and ask to look at the accident book. His treatment should have been clearly documented and signed off by a first aider. I would then suggest you ask for their policy on dealing with accidents. Clearly they need some further training in this area. If you are not happy with any of the answers you are given then write to the chair of governors detailing the treatment of your son and your concerns. Bless him. Hope his head feels better soon x

To leave a child unattended with a head injury they have already pointed out required more treatment is very risky.

ClaraZafara · 24/03/2018 10:02

I'm a first aider at work (school) and would have either called an ambulance (depending on how quickly you could get here) or sat with him talking to him until you arrived.

Not a chance he would have been left unsupervised for a minute after a head injury serious enough to cause such a large cut.

ToesInWater · 24/03/2018 10:02

YANBU - I can't believe they left a 7yo who had had a head injury alone and argued against calling an ambulance. Hope your little boy is ok.

SuburbanRhonda · 24/03/2018 10:03

I work in a school and I think someone should have been sitting with him.

If you or another person were unable to come within 30 minutes I’d have called an ambulance.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 24/03/2018 10:06

Is there a school nurse? There should at least be a first aider who should have taken the child to the hospital straightaway with a gash and bang to the head like that.

Doobedoobedoobedoobedoobe · 24/03/2018 10:08

YADNBU

Sick or injured children should never be left unattended. Ambulance should have been called when he deteriorated. I'm not a complainer but I'd kick up a huge fuss about this.

In comparison One of my kids had a less serious head injury. I was 20 mins from school when they called, which was 15 mins from hospital. Two staff members took my DC in a car (with my permission) so I could meet them there and they could be seen quicker.

I've never seen a sick or injured child unattended and I've picked up sick or injured kids many times over the years. Even with drastic cuts to TAs an ill or injured child is always monitored until collected.

TheSockGoblin · 24/03/2018 10:13

Yea I think this is definitely a guns blazing moment.

They didn't take a head injury that required 9 stitches to close seriously and left a young child bleeding my himself with no real support.

Not only was it dangerous, it shows a concerning lack of empathy or concern for a child in their care.

I'd be furious and I'm a pretty stoic 'get on with it' sort of person.

CoraPirbright · 24/03/2018 10:15

He may need hospital treatment?? The poor kid ended up with 9 STITCHES. There was no bloody may about it!! AND it was a head wound - they always need taking seriously. Serious bad judgement on behalf of the school - who on earth is their nurse/first aider? They need far better training and/or a kick up the arse. I would def go in on Monday and let rip. I am so glad he is alright now. Flowers

HoppingPavlova · 24/03/2018 10:16

I think the cut did not require emergency assistance, perfectly reasonable having him wait for you to take him for treatment.

The disorientation is completely different. He should not have been left unattended and an ambulance should have been called. I would definitely be having words to the school about this.

NewSense · 24/03/2018 10:17

I think you have every reason to question their actions and complain in this situation. How awful.

When I was younger I passed out and was taken to the office. They called my mum and an ambulance, and I hadn't even damaged myself, was just incoherent. That said, they did then prop me up in a chair in the corridor and leave me until my mum arrived. I slumped and fell off the chair and remember lying on the floor thinking "I wonder when they'll find me"... I don't understand the leaving stick kids unattended thing at all!

UniteCasting · 24/03/2018 10:22

They probably may not have had a member of staff available to go with him in the ambulance?

RavenclawRealist · 24/03/2018 10:24

The first one is impossible to say really if he was fine mentally after the incident the st that point there would have been no need for an ambulance! But this leads into the second one which is where I think they were clearly wrong he shouldn't have been left alone with a head injury someone should of been with him watching him closely! The fact that you arrived spoke to him and assessed is mental state before they came over shows they weren't doing either that's were I would focus the complaint

DailyWailEatsSnails · 24/03/2018 10:25

I dunno, I am the other way around where I feel the school was being over-cautious when DC were obviously just trying it on ("I feel sick!") etc. I feel exasperated with how over-cautious the school can be.

You don't know how he presented before you arrived, he may have been as coherent as ever until 1 minute before your arrival. How long passed from the phone call to you before you saw him in person?
