DS4 is 7 (yr2). He fell while running in the playground and cut his head open above his eyebrow. I get a call from the school saying he may need hospital treatment and would I come and collect him. When I get there he is sitting outside reception, unaccompanied. His head is completely bandaged as is one eye. His white shirt is red with blood. I go over to him before going to the desk and talk to him for about 30 seconds to a minute before a receptionist asks if she can help. DS is disoriented and ask her to call an ambulance. "I don't think there is any need for that!" She says "it would be quicker if you take him yourself" I ask again for an ambulance explaining that his altered mental state concerns me and if he deteriorates in the back of the car while driving to the hospital I am helpless. She begrudgingly calls one. DS need 9 stitches to close the wound and was kept in overnight for observation. I have 2 AIBUs.

  1. AIBU to think someone should have called an ambulance before calling me? He had a cut the length of his eyebrow and gaping. He wasnt behaving normally.
  2. As no ambulance was called. Shouldn't someone have been sat with him in reception? Obviously the receptionists weren't keeping an eye on him or they would have noticed me sooner.
Fortunately DS is OK and back home but I can't help thinking it could have been worse. I will go in on Monday and find out why no one called an ambulance but I just want to know if IABU before going in all guns blazing.

The HT's behaviour is totally unacceptable. You would be more than justified in taking it further. If you decide to do so include photos of the injury, as pictures speak louder than words.

HT sounds a right twat and clearly doesn't have a clue what's going on in his school.

I agree with a PP reiterate in writing (via email so you have a digital chain) what the HT said he was going to do re policies etc and copy in the chair of governors too. Ask to receive a copy of the updated policy and ensure a timescale is placed on it too. For what it's worth I teach in a Secondary School and our First Aiders would never leave any sick or injured child alone whilst awaiting collection - - let alone one with a head injury!!

I am horrified that they left him unattended, but even more, that it was in a place where you could walk in and talk to him (and did) without them noticing or knowing who you were. Presumably, in that case, he could have wandered off in confusion without them knowing? Or some random person could have come in and taken him away (albeit very unlikely)? Massive safeguarding issues there.

IME working at a school, any potentially serious injuries, i.e. anything requiring medical attention beyond school first aid, are taken extremely seriously and there's absolutely no way a child in that situation would be left alone. Aside from anything else it would be really scary for them.

Glad to hear your DS is doing ok now.

Ds broke his arm at school and stayed for 2+hours.
They applied a wet paper towel...

Ds has asd and doesn’t react to pain as you would expect so when teacher said to him was he ok he just said yes and carried on, they said he’d knocked it and the rest of the afternoon he’d been a bit quiet and pale, whereas when he’s had a little knock in the past that probably barely hurt he screamed the school down.
Their response would’ve been understandable and accepted if we’d not been in for a meeting three days before and reminded them then that his pain reactions are basically backwards, if he’s screaming and crying he’s probably fine but if he’s seriously hurt he either won’t react or will be quiet and pale.
They got the full force of my wrath a couple of days later and now have notes up in the office saying “yarns ds has altered pain response ANY accident requires a call to Mum to assess injury do NOT assume it’s not serious” I’m a sahm and live round the corner and have been called to school twice since the arm incident, both times he was ok just a bump but they knew how incredibly close the cane to getting sued dmso won’t make the same mistake again (he broke his arm falling in pe when they’d not bothered to put the crash mats under the balance beams)

Defo not unreasonable. They should have called an ambulance.
Also, any head injury should be treated as significant- and he should have had a member of staff with him until you arrived.
Their policy needs updated.

I get very regular phone calls that my DS has been involved in head-related scuffs and they mostly leave it up to me to decide what course of action to take (Watch & wait / call back in 15 minutes/ bring to reception so I can collect him and on one occasion, yes, they did call the ambulance- however, I arrived before it and was happy to take him myself - but if there was a gash I would most definitely have wanted it looking at sooner rather than later- especially with the amount of blood loss you describe Shock)

Do take this up with them, OP

I had something similar happen with my dd, she was then about 9yo and I had a call at work to say dd had 'hit her head' when I arrived at the school dd was sat on her own in reception. At first i didn't think it was too bad as she was holding a cold compress to her forehead but when she took it off Shock she had a huge egg on her forehead that looked awful.

There was no one available to tell me what had happened and I just left with her and took her to a&e. She was fine but they kept her in for a few hours to monitor for concussion.

I was really angry with the school and complained.
