hi all

bride to be here, getting married this year.

my make up artist recommended a hair stylist for myself and my bridesmaids for the day. ive had the trial with her and shes lovely and i was happy with what she did.

our venue is about an hour away from where we live and the hairdresser said she's happy to travel.

the only problem is she said she will be charging £75 for travel costs.

i have looked online at estimated fuel costs and it's coming up at £20. to drive there. i asked if she was driving or getting the train and she said driving.

her other charges for myself and the bridesmaids are reasonable and like i said, she's really nice and i love how she did my hair.

i just feel that £75 for travel is extortionate and don't know whether i should talk to her about this? i understand its up to her to set the prices but would you be happy to pay this?

i dont really have time to look at more local hair stylists either.

That's also paying for wear and tear, business insurance on her car and her time whilst driving.

I guess it's a 100 mile round trip.

Seems fair enough to me.

Ihatemyclients · 23/03/2018 13:26

You're right that she can charge what she likes, but it might be worth raising it with her anyway in case she has miscalculated. Even if she is charging for a share of her insurance / wear and tear on the car etc £75 seems like a lot.

Aeroflotgirl · 23/03/2018 13:26

It is an awful lot, that £75 is not only fuel, but an hour of her time travelling to you. Either use her and pay the cost, or find someone more local.

DangerousMouse · 23/03/2018 13:26

Surely if it's an hour away then that payment is for fuel and 2 hours of her time - if the fuel is £20 then she is charging you just over £25 per hour, thats reasonable for a hairdresser to charge.

TheMasterNotMargarita · 23/03/2018 13:27

It's not just fuel though is it? It's the time.
So £20 there, £20 back in fuel costs = £40. Plus an extra £35 for time etc.
It's not awful, especially if you are happy with her otherwise.

Aeroflotgirl · 23/03/2018 13:27

Oh right, it also includes her travelling back, seems fair enough.

newcupcake · 23/03/2018 13:27

Yes what previous posters say it's not just fuel but two hours of her time too perfectly reasonable

nuggies · 23/03/2018 13:27

@aeroflotgirl i will use her, but im just wondering if £75 is extortionate or not.

SluttyButty · 23/03/2018 13:28

That’s two hours (maybe more) of travel time that they can’t make money on other clients though?

Aeroflotgirl · 23/03/2018 13:29

No it's not op. That includes fuel, 2 hours of her time travelling to you, and wear and rear of her car.

nuggies · 23/03/2018 13:29

is the costs of her time not factored into what she is charging me to do mine and my bridesmaids hair though? Confused

OP posts:
VileyRose · 23/03/2018 13:29

I'm paying 60 fuel for a 40min drive. I thought that was cheap for fuel+time

jaseyraex · 23/03/2018 13:29

That's reasonable to me. It's £20 there so £20 back too plus her time for travelling. I would just pay it especially if you like her.

nuggies · 23/03/2018 13:30

oh yes i see what you all mean. ok great i will pay the £75 then. i have never done this before so was unsure.

OP posts:
OrangeHorses · 23/03/2018 13:30

Seems reasonable to me. As others have said you're also paying for her time not just travel costs.

Aeroflotgirl · 23/03/2018 13:31

Just pay it if your happy. In that time that she is travelling to you and back, is the time she could be working on clients. My hairdresser takes about 20 mins to cut my short hair, so she cod be fitting in 4 clients in those 2 hours if travelling.

SnowiestMountain · 23/03/2018 13:32

Business mileage is about 45p per mile so work out how far it would be and how much it would cost at that rate, then you'll easily be able to see if she's about right or not.

Cuppaoftea · 23/03/2018 13:33

Yes sounds reasonable, she'll be spending 2 hours of the day just driving to your venue and back so you do need to pay for that time as well.

Aeroflotgirl · 23/03/2018 13:33

The price she quoted to you is probably for the hair, not the travel.

SnowiestMountain · 23/03/2018 13:34

And yes, take into account what else she could be going in the driving time!

FinallyHere · 23/03/2018 13:34

If she had factored the cost of travel, and at least two hours of her time (its likely to be a tad more as she will very likely set of early for a bit of contingency) into the original cost, then her prices would have seemed high.

Aeroflotgirl · 23/03/2018 13:34

Oh yes, dd has a carer, and SS pay up to £20 a month of milage, if we go over that, I have to pay 45p per mile, to the care company

ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 23/03/2018 13:35

is the costs of her time not factored into what she is charging me to do mine and my bridesmaids hair though? confused

That’s just the time it will take to do the hairs. Her travel time has to be paid for too. She could fit another client in those two hours and make money if she wants travelling to you so of course you have to make it worth her while!

Baaaaaaaaaaaa · 23/03/2018 13:35

Fuel may only be £20 but you also have to consider the two hours time to drive there and back again. It all costs.

Doobigetta · 23/03/2018 14:02

I'd look at the total cost, and decide whether that's acceptable to you- don't worry too much about how it breaks down.

I don't know about you, OP, but I'm finding wedding hairdressers a total fucking nightmare- worse than all the other suppliers put together. I'm now on my third, because the first decided she'd rather go on holiday, and the second cancelled two trial sessions with half an hour's notice and couldn't understand why I thought this made her unreliable and wasn't keen to trust her on the day.
