To think the postman was out of order

Knock on the door so answered and it was a postman with a parcel
Had quite a few delivered recently but have not been in which is not an issue as DH works just down the road from the sorting office so have just taken the card
The postman said “for future reference if you are not going to be in don’t have things delivered”
I said “excuse me”
Postman “it’s a waste of my time”
Me “well maybe there should be an option to have things stay at the sorting office until you can get them”
Postman “can’t you have delivered to a neighbour?”
Me “No as the last thing you delivered to a neighbour went missing”
Postman “Of bugger off then and be awkward”
Me “Shock

Yanbu...what a ridiculous thing to say and very unprofessional!

I never answer the door to the postman as they usually turn up when I'm putting baby down for her nap...not going to stop me ordering anything and I certainly won't be inconveniencing a neighbour when it's the postmans job!

Avasarala · 23/03/2018 12:14

He was rude. That's his job - deliver the post or leave a card if you're not in. Often with orders, it's a "dispatched within x days" so you can't be sure what day it will arrive and can't always arrange to be in.

I'd be having a word with royal mail - he's having a go at you simply for being asked to do his job. He'd most likely be coming up to your door anyway with letters so it's not as if he's gone out of his way.

Corblimeyguv · 23/03/2018 12:14

I think you ought to complain. That’s a terrible attitude. And online orders and home deliveries are the future of shopping, so it sounds like he’s in the wrong job anyway...

AthenasOwl · 23/03/2018 12:15

So he's annoyed about doing his job? Lol how ridiculous. I'd probably complain. He sounds like a tosser.

HonkyWonkWoman · 23/03/2018 12:16

That's crazy! What does it matter whether he delivers the parcel if you are in or has to put a card through the door?
He still has to come to your door, it's not like he has to come back again if you're not in.
That is weird and he sounds bonkers!

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 23/03/2018 12:17

I believe it I’ve had two posties say similar one actually put his foot in my door to try and stop me shutting it when I closed the door as he was being so abusive. I complained both times.
Exh is a postie and he has been appalled at some of the staff they have in my local office and how often I don’t get mail delivered he just wouldn’t get away with it in his office.
The Royal Mail is being kept spectacularly short staffed at the moment but that is no excuse for this kind of behaviour.

Chocywockydodahhhhhh · 23/03/2018 12:17

Going to complain. The last postman we had was lovely but his one just thrusts things at you and grunts. Today was the first time I heard him speak

Bramble71 · 23/03/2018 12:18

YANBU. I'd call in to the delivery office and ask to see the manager. They will know who was on your particular route on the day in question.

I imagine posted get lots of rude customers, but they shouldn't be dishing it out themselves.

Stillgameforalaugh · 23/03/2018 12:18

Och that is nothing. We had a new postie this morning. Dd aged 4 met him on the path as I was getting the baby into the pram. I called morning to him and he cheerfully asked me if I was on granny duties today. I'm thirty-fucking-eight 😡😡😡😡
Apparently dd said something that to him sounded like I'll give the letter to granny.
Im off to get botox....

falsepriest · 23/03/2018 12:18

I briefly was a postie. Was always baffled when you'd knock on someone's door with a parcel and they'd be a bit arsey that you disturbed them with the item they ordered and/or say "oh you're lucky I was in".

Why am I the lucky one? Couldn't give two shits whether you get it or not. Grin

People, eh?

stayathomegardener · 23/03/2018 12:20

Could he have been joking?

If not that's so rude

Chocywockydodahhhhhh · 23/03/2018 12:24

I have heard him knock on the neighbours door. First he knocks, then again with his fists shouting “is anyone in? come to the door”. He actually sounds like a policeman the way he says it. So I told a fib before I have heard him speak, well shout anything
This morning he kept pressing the doorbell until I got there.

DH is on holiday next week and he is a big guy so will let him answer the door and get him to say say “I believe you have an issue that you talked over with my wife? Could you explain it to me please?”
DH would not hurt a fly and is a gentle giant but i recon the postman will be a lot less rude to him.

OP posts:
Chocywockydodahhhhhh · 23/03/2018 12:26

Def was not joking. I have never even seen this postman crack a smile.

So I am taking it that is did not make you job harder at all falsepriest

Wdigin2this · 23/03/2018 12:29

Wow, report the cheeky git!

italiancortado · 23/03/2018 12:31

Well he was unnecessarily rude, however, I do take his point. It IS a waste of his time, he is also carrying about your things needlessly.

So while he was out of order I totally understand his frustration.

Incidentally, why on earth do you keep ordering things when you know you will not be in to receive them?

SunnyTikka · 23/03/2018 12:32

I'd report him. What a miserable git.

Last week my door was hammered and the bell was rung twice. I was working from home - int he study at the back of the house - and my DH was in bed as he has been on nights. When I got to the door, it was a parcel for a neighbour. I accepted and then said "Please don't ring and knock if you see curtains closed as we are shift workers - IF the parcel is not for us".

Viviennemary · 23/03/2018 12:37

How very dare postman knock on doors and ring bells and attempt to deliver parcels to MNetters who have far more important things to do than answer the door. Hmm

Chocywockydodahhhhhh · 23/03/2018 12:38

Because italiancortado
A. A parcel ordered does not come on a set day. I have ordered things and they have come anything between 2 and 10 days with some thing taking even longer as they have got lost in the system.

B. The postman comes at different times each day and I have things to do such as the school run and going to the shops and my voluntary work.
C. If there was an option to leave parcel at the sorting office until it could collected I would use it

OP posts:
morningconstitutional2017 · 23/03/2018 12:40

Obviously he was well out of order but maybe he was having a particularly bad day and you got him at a really bad moment. Maybe a previous customer had been rude to him and he just let his guard down.

Chocywockydodahhhhhh · 23/03/2018 12:40

Also two of the parcels came when I was in A&E with concussion.

OP posts:
BoredOnMatLeave · 23/03/2018 12:43

italiancortado 90% of the stuff I order just says 3-5 business days, should I take 5 days off work and wait for it? Not everything you buy online has a store.

I get it's annoying but it's his job
