To get a shopping trolley?

MrsMotherHen · 22/03/2018 10:41

My DS is now 3 and is far to big to be pushed around in the double pram now and is quite a good walker.

Our supermarket or town centre is 30min walk so not far really (he will sit in trolley for a rest when we get there)......anyway I also have my 9 month old in a mei tai carrier, as she hates her pram. So I don't have anywhere to put my shopping would I look a bugger with a funky print pull along?

So AIBU to get a shopping trolley at 27? Shock[ blush]

@Phosphorus mine folds flattish, so at shops where scan as you go isn't an option I just carry it round in the trolley like you would with ordinary bags, then unfold it and load it as the cashier hurls the goods through.

YouGotRedOnYou · 24/03/2018 13:44

I couldn't do it
It is just literally a bag/box on wheels. Grin
Ive got a really fancy one that I won on a random competition website about 8 years ago. It has these wheels that make it so easy to pull (Similar to ones on heavy-ish prams). It makes it easy to go up steps. The bag can be "let out" for bigger loads and it was so sturdy that dh used to put dd on it and drag her along when we used it on days out. We've not used it in a while (in fact my neighbour has it and is probably hoping I wont ask for it back). I used to be able to fit about 5 carrier bags in it and balance more on top.
Ive seen blokes using them more and more. No one bats an eyelid.

I don't understand the ageist view on personal shopping trolley's here. When I went to uni in California loads of us used them since very few people brought their car due to the parking issues and expense.

ferrier · 24/03/2018 13:56

Where do you get your funky trolleys from? I only ever see naff ones and would really love one that's at least a smidgen cool 😅

InTheRoseGarden · 24/03/2018 14:03

Yes can someone link to one please. I'm still in the stroller stage but am intrigued!

SharonBottsPoundOfGrapes · 24/03/2018 14:06

Ferrier I have something similar to this. Lots of funky ones on Amazon. www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B074KZWLNS/ref=mp_s_a_1_56?psc=1&keywords=shopping+trolley+on+wheels&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8&qid=1521900228&sr=8-56-spons

summeraupair · 24/03/2018 14:07

I've been so tempted by one many times, I carry my one-year-old on my back a lot and it would really be useful! Always been far too worried about being judged though Blush

SharonBottsPoundOfGrapes · 24/03/2018 14:09

Just seen this which might appeal to those who miss pushing a buggy but dont want a granny type push along. Grin Im quite tempted. www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B071L6MZYY/ref=sspa_mw_detail_3?psc=1&tag=mumsnetforum-21

PrettyLittIeThing · 24/03/2018 14:11

I really have only seen elderly ladies pushing them. I said to my mum she should get one as she was moaning about her shopping and she said she wouldn't be seen dead with one, and she's mid 60s. She uses a suitcase instead.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 24/03/2018 14:16

I thought about getting a shopping trolley but settled on a basket in the end. A trolley sounds like an ideal solution for you!

SharonBottsPoundOfGrapes · 24/03/2018 14:19

Ive seen people using suitcases too but honestly theres more room in a shopping trolley. Does anyone remember when youd see people using old buggies ( maybe im showing my age but the butchers stripe maclaren type) for everything except the intended purpose? Laundrette, shopping, days out etc. Theyd be piled perilously high. Grin

boxthefox · 24/03/2018 14:26

I don't have young children to worry about and I love a rummage around the shops. I take the tram into town and on far too many occasions bought far more than I intended and carrying heavy shopping is NOT fun!

So I wanted a solution. (Just to mention I dislike large covered shopping malls where I could park) I much prefer a wander around town. So I bought myself a wheelie backpack. It is amazing! I can put it over my shoulder on the way in, and wheel it when full on the way back.

I was once approached in a shop by an assistant who asked where I got it (Argos) she was well impressed! It is perfect for me, not too big and does the job!

I gave up worrying about what others think years ago. They don't give a hoot, they are only interested in themselves.

Bobojangles · 24/03/2018 14:26

I had one I used to use when by baby was little and in his sling. I gave it to the charity shop in the end because although it was ok, I got a sore arm pulling it when it was very full. If I have another I'd probably try baby on front and a backpack instead

Situp · 24/03/2018 14:29

We used to live in France and people use them all the time. They are great.

The idea that you would forego a really obvious solution to your problem because of what people might think is crazy!

Flomy · 24/03/2018 14:35

You could just get a black holdall on wheels with a zip at the top.

Givemestrengthorwine · 24/03/2018 14:42

I got myself one for going to the laundrette. I dont drive, so it was my only option really. Dont care what people think, although my hubby laughed at me!!! Have alook on amazon they do some nice ones. Xx

Pandoraslastchance · 24/03/2018 14:46

I've got a pink one with blue flowers and I dont give a crap what people think. Im rather fond of my trolley. I've had it since I was 25.

LadyRenoir · 24/03/2018 14:56

@Phosphorus - you can attach the trolley to the metal one and offff you go!

Zippea · 24/03/2018 15:00

I got one about 5-6 years ago. I wished I had got one sooner. Mine has pugs!

MorningsEleven · 24/03/2018 15:10

I've got one and it's brilliant. I managed to fit a folding table from the Futon Company in mine last week.

TooManyPaws · 24/03/2018 15:22

I've got one with multicoloured owls all over it. Totally brilliant.

GREATAUNT1 · 24/03/2018 15:36

I've been on one for a few years now, although I did feel like I was far too young for one to being with. All the young girls, & some boys seem to have them too. So who's the fool, me with my leopard skin wheels, or those struggling with their many bags?

There are some people who still can't bring themselves to have one so they use a small suitcase. I'm puzzled as to how they get their shopping in them without having to open it up fully, anyone?

Andrewofgg · 24/03/2018 15:42

Just don’t block the aisle on the bus with it. And don’t put it in the wheelchair area!

Crunkly · 25/03/2018 11:06

I had one as a student in London. Makes life a heck of lot easier and loads of other young people had one too.

I think you need to stop being so paranoid about how you look to others and do what you want.

MrsMotherHen · 05/04/2018 14:25

I bit the bullet today I got far more shopping than I anticipated so had no choice. They were by the till at home bargains and at £7.99 its a steal.

It's a bit more old ladyish than I wanted but will get another eventually and its huge inside.

To get a shopping trolley?
