I actively cringe when I read this word.... although not if I hear it - must be used by an American/American sounding person otherwise it just sounds fricking weird!!

HighwayDragon1 · 21/03/2018 21:22

Never move to the west midlands then, that's how they allsay it!

delilabell · 21/03/2018 21:22

I don't know where the we came from!

GerdaLovesLili · 21/03/2018 21:25

Didn't we just do this? www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/3191029-am-i-the-only-one-who-s-utterly-gobsmacked-at-mom-cards

britespark1 · 21/03/2018 21:25

I’m from the West Midlands and that’s just how we say it Confused

CryingMessFFS · 21/03/2018 21:26

There was a thread about this just a few days ago. Some parts of the UK (mainly West Midlands but some others) use Mom, it’s just the way they speak and there is nothing wrong with it, I don’t get the hate? I live in Birmingham, and my DH and children say ‘Mom’ and even though I’m originally from somewhere that uses ‘Mum’ I’ve never found it weird or cringey. 🤷‍♀️

StripySocksAndDocs · 21/03/2018 21:27

Well this is déjà vu on speed.

reallybadidea · 21/03/2018 21:28

Oh come on, not this again.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 21/03/2018 21:29

I use it, my mom grew up in the Midlands. My granny always signed herself as Mom and she was Scottish.

I know someone who says "mother", which personally I hate but it's none of my business what she calls her parent.

YABU.

RazzleDazz1e · 21/03/2018 21:30

News to me West Midlands.... learn something new every day!!

As for deja vu- I don’t have an encyclopaedic knowledge of every other thread posted :/

bridgetreilly · 21/03/2018 21:31

YABU. People can call their mothers whatever they and their mother prefer.

RazzleDazz1e · 21/03/2018 21:31

Just to clarify I don’t have ‘hate’ as such- just one of those things!

OP posts:
Creambun2 · 21/03/2018 21:32

I've know plenty of people from the west midlands who don't use the term "mom".

Prettylovely · 21/03/2018 21:35

I filled out my sons form for updating details for cubs the other day and was surprised in the contact details it said "Mom" for which part I had to fill out.

Cavender · 21/03/2018 21:41

But even given that you didn’t know about the British usage of the word why would it bother so much?

Do you cringe when you hear maman, madre, mamma or mammy?

Or is it just American words you are rude about?

LastOneDancing · 21/03/2018 21:43

Yes yes, everyone hates Birmingham accents and colloquialisms. We get it. TBH it's not the accent I'd have chosen but I scrape by day to day Hmm

Duckswaddle · 21/03/2018 21:48

I'm brummie and love our accent and local words Grin to be honest, to me 'mum' sounds incredibly posh and I'd never use it, but plenty of people do shrug

BlancheM · 21/03/2018 22:43

An ex used to do this. I asked him if it was his phone autocorrecting it and he said that's just how he spells it. He's from Sheffield! It's definitely 'mum' or even 'mam' round there.

Forevertired19 · 21/03/2018 22:48

Hmm do people have nothing better to do? I'm from the west mids and use 'mom'.
She's my mom not my mum. I'd never dream of calling her mum.

myusernameisnotmyusername · 21/03/2018 22:48

I've moved to Birmingham and didn't know they said mom until I lived here. It doesn't really bother me although I'd rather dd said Mum just because it sounds 'right' to me (from east mids). But it doesn't sound weird or anything.

MissDuke · 21/03/2018 22:49

Guys come on, the title was very obvious - if bored of the topic, why click? Not everyone has time to read every single previous post!

Anyway I dislike it too op.

OwlinaTree · 21/03/2018 22:51

Yes I'm in West miss and it's often mom.

OwlinaTree · 21/03/2018 22:52

West mids!

Onlyoldontheoutside · 21/03/2018 23:43

The West midlands is bigger than just Birmingham so plenty of us use Mum.

RideOn · 22/03/2018 00:05

I am from a Mum area but have moved to a Mammy/ Mummy area (even adult children) but I think it’s so weird and had to stick to Mummy in primary school only and then Mum! I couldn’t be a Mom either but I’ve no strong feelings about others being Mom!
