I actively cringe when I read this word.... although not if I hear it - must be used by an American/American sounding person otherwise it just sounds fricking weird!!

When Prince Charles says it, he puts the stress on the second syllable. In the Southern US, where it is a very common name for mother, the stress is on the first syllable. An alternate spelling is momma; when an American writes "mama" as in some of the Facebook posts referred to above, it is always this pronunciation.

I'm in Scotland and I'm Mama. Heard someone call their mother Mom the other day too. Don't know why you give a fuck

Freddie Mercury called his mother 'mama' too. (In Bohemian Rhapsody.) Grin

‘Mama’. I have never in my life heard someone use this term
Mama is often what babies call their mum so no idea whu you've never heard any one call their mum mamma.

Apart from that its common in the north so if you've never heard it in england, try going north of the watford gap. Sorry your post deserves that kind of ingorant reply. And actually as despite this thread repeatedly proving that "mom" is very english and used more than mum or mam in the midlands, youve said mom is american seriously get out and travel you'll hear mom, mommy, momma, mamma, mammy and mam

Also, its very very common in ireland, an english speaking country.

I'm thinking of setting up a card making business here. Every Mother's Day in Brum all I can find are 'Mum' cards!!!!!

TheFirstMrsDV · 23/03/2018 06:55

Someone wrote something like 'This is a terrible tragedy. My thoughts are with the mom at this time' on the Daily Mail website.
First response was 'we use Mum here'

Just about sums up the Daily Mail reader really.
