To think its impossible to find a 'daughter' birthday card thats not twee pink shite?

DD is 9 soon, she is NOT a girly girl, total tomboy, loves all things pokemon, dragons and wolves.

She hates Disney, hates unicorns and definitely hates Dolls. She's also not keen on Star Wars or Marvel.

Having been around sainsburys, Tesco and morrisons, so far I have not found a single suitable 'daughter' card for her age/tastes, nor one with 9 on it that isn't either twee pink shite, or star wars, or marvel.

Obviously I know I don't have to buy them and can find a suitable one and do stickers or make my own...etc but its just an annoyance.

That was then further compounded by trying to find her a few t-shirts that weren't pink, unicorn, fashion industry based or covered in sequins, feathery crap or glitter... I ended up in the boys section in George for that one!

Anyone got any ideas for the future because this 'tomboy' (I hate that word but cant think of better) phase has been going on a while and its getting difficult to buy for her.

I would have a look on Amazon, and do some fairly open-ended searches, like here:

www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?tag=mumsnetforum-21&url=search-alias%3Dfashion&field-keywords=wolves

I do agree with you that the whole boy/girl clothes thing is getting even more separated . School shoes are always a particularly bug-bear of mine. Tough and robust for the boys, and stupid ballet pumps or mary-janes for the girls - god forbid they may want to actually run around, or get their feet wet! I found some lace-up brougues for DD, but it wasn't easy.
My daughter liked anything craft based, Lego (not girly lego!), chemistry sets, outdoor stuff like cross bows, roller skates etc.

Troubleinstore · 21/03/2018 17:57

I buy my DD a card I think she'll like regardless of whether it has Daughter on the front - she knows she's my daughter and having a card without it doesn't bother her. (I do make sure the card has pride of place on it's own though - so everyone knows it's the special one! Wink

KriticalSoul · 21/03/2018 18:29

Thanks suited, i'll try that next time, didn't think of Amazon!

I've ended up buying a generic card that more her style and some gold stickers to jazz it up a little :)

I think cards that have ‘daughter’ or ‘mum’ on the front look really chavvy - can’t you buy a nice one that looks a bit grown up for her?

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 21/03/2018 18:32

Chavvy? Really? A card?

I think it’s hard to find anything that doesn’t play up gender stereotypes. I find nice cards on Etsy, I just make sure the location of the shop is set to GB.

KriticalSoul · 21/03/2018 18:34

dinosaur, no, because she isn't 'grown up' she's still a child, just not a girly one!

OP posts:
angieloumc · 21/03/2018 18:35

Chavvy because they say daughter or mum on them? What a strange thing to say but each to their own.
OP New Look 915 have lots of girls tops that aren't too 'girly' my DD who is 13 buys from there.

Bryna · 21/03/2018 18:36

All my Daughters clothes and shoes come from the ‘boys’ section, she won’t even even look at the ‘girls’!

BoxOfShreddies · 21/03/2018 18:38

Moonpig. Loads of choice and you can personlise. Option to send it to you. I use them all the time.

LannieDuck · 21/03/2018 18:38

You have my sympathies. My DD is the same, but only 6, so I can just about fall back on the dinosaurs etc still ;) I always check out the boys' section for her clothes.

Greenyogagirl · 21/03/2018 18:40

What I hate about girl/boy clothes is the girls are smaller and cut in at the waist, why they need to emphasise their figure as a child I don’t know. I have a boy and it really irritates me that he can’t just pick the clothes he likes

MagicFajita · 21/03/2018 18:40

Definitely eBay for this. Some lovely handmade cards on there.

VickieCherry · 21/03/2018 18:40

I loathe cards that say who they're for on them. People know who they are. Plus they're usually hideous, twee crap anyway - pink for females and cars/beer for males. Supermarket cards are always awful, they're catering to the 'Oh crap I forgot, anything will do' buyers.

Buy her a pretty card online, or somewhere that does cards without words inside. Clintons have a few surprisingly nice cards in amongst the dross, and Paperchase is always good.

ScreamingValenta · 21/03/2018 18:42

I second eBay, or buy a blank card/generic birthday card plus stick on letters and numbers to personalise it.

ItsAllABitStrangeReally · 21/03/2018 18:42

You need purple Ronnie in your life.

HolyGoats · 21/03/2018 18:44

I think the problem is that the kind of people that generally like the whole ‘daughter’, ‘mother’, ‘second favourite cousin’ etc. kind of cards are, on the whole, the kind of people that aren’t too fussed about gender stereotyping.

AGrinWithoutACat · 21/03/2018 18:45

DD (13) has had photo cards from Moonpig for the past few years - all tailored to her current interests but nothing similar to be found in the shops - more expensive but as they are all still pinned up on her wall and not in the recycling definitely worth it

VickieCherry · 21/03/2018 18:48

HolyGoats That's probably very true.

Here's a cool, fun card for a nine year old... pricey and it is yet another unicorn, but I love it: www.paperchase.co.uk/cards/birthday-cards/all-birthday-cards/rainbow-unicorn-gold-wings.html

Or... too soon? :D www.paperchase.co.uk/cards/birthday-cards/all-birthday-cards/boss-lady-feminist-6.html

(Srsly OP, supermarket cards are rubbish. The internet is where it's at.)

KriticalSoul · 21/03/2018 18:48

Greenyogagirl - I've been quietly horrified at girls shorts for some time, she's been getting hers from the boys section since she was out of nappies Grin

Chavvy for saying happy birthday daughter? What? Confused

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 21/03/2018 18:54

There is nothing more disheartening than pulling a pretty card out of the display and seeing "MUM" or "NAN" or "SIS" or "WHOEVER" on it. I don't like it anyway and it ruins what could be a nice card you could send anyone, it's so limiting.

How sharp is your dd's humour? Punch cartoon cards and Eric the Penguin are quite good. Or the plain cards from M&S or Waitrose. You can add a birthday sticker or write in the card why you chose that one and add a badge from Card Factory?

Winterfellismyhome · 21/03/2018 18:59

Try Etsy

HolyGoats · 21/03/2018 19:01

I just think there are so many lovely pictures that can go on cards. Then you write the message, which is personal, thoughtful and something that your daughter will really know was just for her. Rather than ‘daughter’ written in italics in pink foil. My mil is amazing for getting personalised cards - I got a Happy Halloween for my son and daughter-in-law card in October. Just fucking write the words you want to say!

KriticalSoul · 21/03/2018 19:10

Holy, I do, but I also like the card with mom/sister/daughter etc on them, its something my family has always done, so I kind of feel bad for not doing the same for her.

We love cards, we spend a lot of time picking out just the right one for a person, then do write some lovely things in them.

I've been known to spend £5 on the right one, but we do also keep the important date ones. Moms still got mine from when I was born, and I've done the same with DD for her baby cards and 1st birthday ones so she can read the messages in them when she's older.

We also often clip others to use for scrapbooking and making tags...etc. So its not just about picking up a generic one with 'mom' on and going 'that'll do'

As others have said, EBay! I get personalised cards that really sum my action/ Emo girl and gamer son up made and delivered for about £2.50 and have done for about 6 years
