To think its impossible to find a 'daughter' birthday card thats not twee pink shite?

DD is 9 soon, she is NOT a girly girl, total tomboy, loves all things pokemon, dragons and wolves.

She hates Disney, hates unicorns and definitely hates Dolls. She's also not keen on Star Wars or Marvel.

Having been around sainsburys, Tesco and morrisons, so far I have not found a single suitable 'daughter' card for her age/tastes, nor one with 9 on it that isn't either twee pink shite, or star wars, or marvel.

Obviously I know I don't have to buy them and can find a suitable one and do stickers or make my own...etc but its just an annoyance.

That was then further compounded by trying to find her a few t-shirts that weren't pink, unicorn, fashion industry based or covered in sequins, feathery crap or glitter... I ended up in the boys section in George for that one!

Anyone got any ideas for the future because this 'tomboy' (I hate that word but cant think of better) phase has been going on a while and its getting difficult to buy for her.

Buy a blank card with nice flowers/bees/butterflies etc on it and write something that she would love to read again and again for years to come.

Loathe the ghastly pre-printed rubbish with twee poems and such nonsense. Straight to bin go these, rare as they are, fortunately.

Celticlassie · 21/03/2018 20:28

Good Lord. Now cards with 'mum' etc are chavvy? And some posters put pre-printed cards that have been carefully considered, chosen and paid for in the bin? Just because you like to buy your cards from eBay/Etsy/etc doesn't mean that someone who's bought a card from Tesco bought it last minute and put no effort in.
How ungrateful.

You mentioned t shirts. Have you tried Boden? Bit pricey but some lovely designs - sharks, dinosaurs, mice playing instruments here

I get mine on eBay. Have ordered all sorts of themes like Nerf Guns, Minecraft, favourite YouTubers...

Moonpig is your friend!

bananamonkey · 21/03/2018 20:51

Etsy for nice non-naff cards

fruitpastille · 21/03/2018 20:54

Mountain warehouse is good for clothes I find - the shorts are a good length. Also fat face (I mix boys and girls stuff) but much more pricey.

Buying cards is 'on the hoof' is getting harder here as Card Factory seem to be the only card shop with any presence if you just want to nip out locally. Otherwise it is a special trip into the city centre or being organised enough to buy online in good time! M&S have an okay selection and are usually more tasteful if you have local branches. I also have picked up some nice (bit pricey) cards in large garden centres and farm shops.

I have a 10 year old who won't wear anything pink or with a slogan or anything shiny or glittery. She gets most of her clothes from Gap, H&M and some from Next. She wears a lot of stripey long sleeved t-shirts, baseball raglan type tops, she also wears a lot of block colours and Harry Potter tops from Primark. I've never had a problem getting clothes for her. Cards are usually from Card Factory - they usually have a cake on them or buns and Daughter in big print Wink

eBay have tons of options. You can get nice personalised ones too. My 13 year old DD is exactly the same as yours. I got her a black and red card with her favourite band on the front with her name. She still thought I was "cringy" but at least is wasn't pink, glittery or had unicorns on it!

SleepingStandingUp · 21/03/2018 21:17

I think the problem is that the kind of people that generally like the whole ‘daughter’, ‘mother’, ‘second favourite cousin’ etc. kind of cards are, on the whole, the kind of people that aren’t too fussed about gender stereotyping
On the contrary, I was mightily perturbed that the Mother's Day card with Unicorns on said "To Mommy from your daughter" and it was the one my son wanted. It is possible to like cards stating to whom they are addressed without being a chav in pink sequins and unicorn tracksuit

Tfoot75 · 21/03/2018 21:22

On the clothes, now that my tall almost 5 yo wears age 6-7 I have the opposite problem, most young girls ranges end at age 6 and the ‘older girls’ range in majority of shops seems to be full of leather jackets and ripped jeans! Struggle to find things that suit a 4yo (fair enough, it’s not aimed at her age). I know that some more expensive shops do wider age ranges, but primark, sainsburys etc seems to be all mini-adult at that age, Black, grey and stripy and no pink, glitter or flowers in sight.

Def online for cards

suited I was pleased to see Asda and Clark’s both so full school shoes for girls now.

AtSea1979 · 21/03/2018 21:30

Tfoot I have that problem. My 9 yo DD wears 12-13 clothes and she’d love Disney, pink dresses with bows etc but it’s all sassy tshirts that are awful

NotTakenUsername · 21/03/2018 21:32

Wrt clothes I want to mention shoes. School shoes.

Dd went through 3 pairs last year, looking scuffed and scruffy as get out by the second week. Then another this year before Halloween break... now she is still wearing the same pair from the M&S boys section that I got her 5 months ago. Still not only perfectly presentable, but they actually still look quite smart.

Moonpig or Funkypigeon are what you need. Pick whatever card you want then personalise it with daughter/Her age/name. They're great

bridgetreilly · 21/03/2018 21:33

Try Flamingo Paperie (used to be Phoenix Trading). They do good kid cards in a range of fun subjects.

KriticalSoul · 21/03/2018 21:50

Try Tesco if you like the girly stuff clothes wise, some very pink/glittery/sequin crap in right now, was a fair bit in George too.

She's a contrary madam, she'll wear pink trousers, and she'll wear a pink jumper, but she wont have unicorns, mermaids, flowers, lace, ribbons..etc on her t-shirts which was todays mission!

I don't mind Next for the odd bit, but my budget won't stretch to Boden and Gap, not the way she treats her clothes!!

NotTaken we're using boys shoes from George right now, but when she would wear mary janes, I found the M&S ones the best for standing up to her shoe abuse with not scuffing.. she's worse than her brother who's dyspraxic/autistic.

Holy goats
I really disagree, I always buy close family -‘mum’, husband son sister cards. I just like them but I hate the gender stereotyping that goes on, especially with with impressionable children. I really struggle with finding nice cards for my boy that aren’t all the usual blue/car/dinosaur crap. But I still want a card that says son. Ur post came across quite judgemental.
