To ask you to help me think of a title for my hospital radio show please?

I volunteer for a hospital radio station, and have recently started presenting a show with another volunteer.

We co-present his show, and I then present an hour of his show on my own - so the hour-long show is basically a mini-show of my own.

He’s asked me to think of a name for my own show, and I’m a bit stuck, to be honest!

I’ve thought of a few names, and I’m not totally happy with them yet. I’m also unsure about the names I could have for the three features I’m doing for the show.

Could you help, please?

To give a bit of background about my show, I play a few songs (around ten or so) and talk a bit why I chose them. Usually, they’re songs that I just enjoy listening to.

For the show name, the co-presenter has suggested The French Hour and I’ve thought of Something for the Oui-Kend (it’s a weekend radio show, and this gives it a bit of a French theme, but it’s a bit lame!!)

I also have three features in the show, all linked with a French theme.

For one of the features, I play two French songs (one old-ish French song, one modern French song). A name that I‘ve thought of for this feature is Paris Calling (a play on words of the song London Calling by The Clash, as it’s a radio show with French songs).

The other feature I’m doing is a French-themed quiz. I’ll ask a question related to France or French-speaking countries, and give listeners time to think of an answer and to Tweet in or email their answers, and then I’ll tell them the answer afterwards.

The final feature is where I’ll talk about a French film that I’ve seen recently and review it for the listeners. I would also include some French cultural news in there if anything had happened that week. Maybe I could call it ‘Flicks from France’ or ‘Cinema Saturday’ or something along those lines?

Do you have any suggestions for possible names for the show and the three features please?

Thanks :)

Flicks from France is confusing because les Flics is French slang for the police

AdaColeman · 21/03/2018 19:02

What about "French Kaleidoscope" for the whole show?

clarrylove · 21/03/2018 19:08

Francophilia!

outabout · 21/03/2018 19:13

Darn, Chazs just beat me to saying about the Flics being slang.
A mild concern you have enough 'French material' to keep a long running show going. What is the 'turnover' of listeners (not knowing the duration patients will be at your hospital). Partial repeats may be OK if listeners will only be in a few weeks.
Well done anyway and enjoy yourself.

WellAlwaysHaveParis · 22/03/2018 00:00

Oh gosh yes that’s very true about ‘flic’ being slang for police, Chaz and outandabout Blush that didn’t even cross my mind. I’ll have another think about what to call that feature :)

No real suggestions but sounds very interesting, and you may well know my DF Grin

Allo Allo

Unfortunately, my son is in and out of hospital a lot. (Three times this year so far for at least a week each time) He loves quizzes and hearing about other countries but would get bored by it always being France. My boy is 20 so may not be your target audience, of course.

He suggests choosing a few different countries for the quiz and calling it ‘Around the world in 60 minutes’.

checkedcloth · 22/03/2018 04:45

This made me smile. I trained at the london, had many ward placements at Mile End

Good luck with your show

BringMeTea · 22/03/2018 05:43

Resounding thumbs up to Let’s get Quizzical with the song as the intro. I am all over that. Bon chance Rodney.

outabout · 22/03/2018 08:04

There are a lot of countries that use French, Swathes of the Caribbean and North Africa for a start. By extension this can include a wide variety of music styles.

tiredbutFuckIt · 22/03/2018 08:39

Calling it’s “the French Connection” opens it up to covering all Francophone countries as a PP said, giving you a lot more material to draw on, and including a lot more listeners. Once you consider African and Canadian, there’s a tonne of artists you can play.
Also you can have some “fun” shoehorning in any old vague French references that aren’t really that French and are a bit tenuous.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 22/03/2018 09:08

If you opened it up to all countries it could be '60 Mins around the World' as a slight alternative to Blondephantom's son's suggestion. You could do a different country per month, and then come up with different names for each section according to the country.

outabout · 22/03/2018 09:21

Opening up the choice too wide would involve rather more research and I presume OP doesn't have many hours spare to do this in.
Limiting it to 'French' is probably useful that it gives a boundary and would make the show unique. Too much choice just makes your head hurt like being confronted with 10 'options' for baked beans at the supermarket. Knowing the 'cycle' of your audience in terms of what would be acceptable for repeats which can help reduce the need for constant research.
Sorry I forgot Canada as a French speaking!

tiredbut I absolutely agree :) that was always my intention. Sorry, I get a bit lazy about it, and just say ‘French’ music, but I’ve always meant to play ‘French-language’ music rather than just music from France. One of my favourite ever singers is Jacques Brel, as it happens, so to get him in there, I’d have to cast the net a bit wider than just playing music from France :)

Just bumping this in case anyone had any further ideas :) thanks again, everyone!

ooh lah lah pronouncing the lahs like singing if that makes sense?
matinee matters for the films?
some kind of play on francophone, francophonics?

WellAlwaysHaveParis · 29/03/2018 15:43

Hi again everyone :) the French music feature and the quiz are on the ’definite’ list for features now.

I’d really like to have a French news feature as well, but I’m a bit stuck on what to call it. In this feature, I’d focus on doing a weekly round-up of general (light-hearted) current affairs and cultural news, as well as talking a bit about French cultural traditions related to upcoming events (for example, I’ll talk a bit about French Easter traditions this weekend).

Does anyone have any ideas for what I could call the news feature please? I feel totally stumped when I try to think of a name!

Thanks so much for your help with this :)

Le Catch-Up?
French Catch-Up?
Cette semaine?

WellAlwaysHaveParis · 29/03/2018 17:26

Thanks TimeIhada :) I was thinking about having something like Dispatches from France, and playing News of the World by The Jam as the intro to the feature. What do you think?

OP posts:
AdaColeman · 29/03/2018 17:29

Le Temps

Le journal du (insert whatever day the show goes out)

TimeIhadaNameChange · 30/03/2018 09:24

Whilst I like the idea of you playing News of the World as the intro, I'm struggling to see a connection between that and France...? (Might just be being stupid!)
