What shall I do about this holiday?

Not AIBU but need speedy reply with advice.

Ds (5) was sick on Monday in the night (now Wednesday here in Uk), lots of sick. Kept him off school yesterday and had a sofa day. He was fine in himself mostly. Up and down. Lying down sometimes but also jumping around. Saying his heart was hurting. No other symptoms except being sick.

Wasn't sure what to give him food wise. He had toast with butter for b fast and no lunch. Bacon sandwich for dinner with bread and butter. Dh thinks silly to give this. Was a bacon sandwich wrong?

Anyway, ds sick again last night, tiny amount of sick. Then a further three times with just water and bile. Again no other symptoms.

The problem is we are going on a long haul holiday tomorrow morning. We are meant to get up at 5 am, drive for two hours to the airport, then do 7 hour flight! We don't know if we should cancel holiday or still go. We would loose the total price of the holiday to cancel £6,500. Or £200 per person to try and change dates on it with hotel provider. The flights look like they are non- transferable and we would loose the cost automatically. We don't have travel insurance.

Dh wants to go and reckons its just a stomach bug. He reckons if we stave ds today and on the flight it will be ok. Reckons its a 24 hour bug.

I am reluctant as worried he will be sick again in the night. Worried about having strange food in a hot place will just make him sick again and he will just want to rest all holiday. Think the holiday will be ruined with moany ds. Don't want to risk taking him on long flight if he's ill, could be a nightmare. But we stand to loose £6,500 if we don't.

The water and bile is likely to be because the bacon and butter irritated the already upset stomach

Devastatedupset · 21/03/2018 12:30

I truly can’t believe some of the ms-information on this thread.

OP, your son is sick ... he can’t travel. He wouldn’t be allowed back at school until 48 hours after he STOPPED being sick (bile, water etc counts as being sick). Why do you think it’s ok he travels??

You really are very selfish and irresponsible.

1981m · 21/03/2018 12:30

I haven't decided if we are going or not. I am going to keep hoping he isn't sick again before tomorrow and I guess assess the situation tomorrow morning. It's hard to assess at 5am. He was fine yesterday and then 2am sick in the night. I won't know if he's better until the morning, 2 hrs before we re due to fly.

I am I am not selfish and my ds is my priority over the cost of a holiday. I don't need to rush him to the doctors, that doesn't mean I don't care. He's been sick three times in two days and has no other symptoms. He has no temperature or rash and no aches or pains. He's well in himself.

I can't go later as the flights cannot be changed. We would loose the entire cost and have to pay full price to re-book. I doubt any would be available. It's only the hotel that could be changed.

I honestly haven't decided what to do. I am not a dishonest person who likes lying and I have been thinking about other people on the flight plus dh, me and dd. I am not a Bda person, I am trying to do the right thing. Just a very stupid one who didn't get TI

wineandsunshine · 21/03/2018 12:32

I would just keep him on boiled water and plain toast, lots of rest and cuddles.

I'm sure he will be fine for the holiday and fingers crossed he is over the worst of it now.
Have a lovely holiday!

BarbarianMum · 21/03/2018 12:32

Um, no. He'd have thrown up the bacon sarnie if it'd been a problem. The water and bile is because he's still full of virus and his stomach was empty.

Yukbuck · 21/03/2018 12:33

What a horrible situation to be in. If it were me, I'd see if you could change flights to maybe Friday (If he isn't sick throughout the night)
I wouldn't try and claim on the insurance you've taken out today unless you are honest with them. It's lying and they may be able to find out.
When was he last sick (the water and bile does count)
I'd see how he is throughout the day. Feed him plain things. Don't starve him. Poor thing needs to do what his body feels it needs.
Also ignore everyone who says you'll probably all catch it. You may not. I work with kids and am constantly around sickness bugs (working in their home) and (touches wood) I am yet to catch a sickness bug. Things to help is constantly washing hands and keeping DS as clean as possible.

cestlavielife · 21/03/2018 12:33

Get amnual.family travel.insurance and renew each year. It s not that expensive compared to 6500

If you cancel due to illness you need doctor certification

TrickyD · 21/03/2018 12:35

Would they be able to investigate if ds was off school then? I sent an email to the teacher. Can they get access to this?
I am not going to take him to the doctor. He's not that unwell plus that shows a illness before travel.

You are obviously prepared to lie through your teeth if your son does become ill while you are away and you show little concern for his welfare.

Have you not read about people who were prosecuted for fraud because they said they were ill on holiday? Not the same as you but you are planning similar dishonesty.

And driving up the costs of insurance for honest people.

You should be hoping the DM doesn't spot this thread.

1981m · 21/03/2018 12:36

In all honesty- if you were in my situation I don't think there's many people who would just right off £6,500 for a holiday unless it was a really serious illness.

OP posts:
Yukbuck · 21/03/2018 12:37

OP I feel like your story is changing slightly. In your original post you say he was sick lots on Monday. Then you say he was sick Tuesday night and a further 3 times with water / bile . But now you're saying he's only been sick 3 times.

Papergirl1968 · 21/03/2018 12:37

Sounds to me like he is well on the road to recovery. Kids bounce back quickly.
If he is kept quiet and on small amounts of plain food today (make him eat slowly, and a bit at a time), and plenty of sips of fluid, the chances are he will be fine.
Obviously don’t let him have a big greasy breakfast or something at the airport or in the plane. Might be best to take him something like a soft buttered roll in your hand luggage (not much butter!)

TerrorAustralis · 21/03/2018 12:38

If it's the cost of flights that's the issue, most airlines will allow change of dates with a doctor's note. They don't want you flying ill.

shesakeeper · 21/03/2018 12:40

It sounds like you have decided what to do tbh.

Diffdaff · 21/03/2018 12:41

Phewy, some harsh people on here who love to rub stuff in. The only good thing about tummy bugs is that they are usually very shortlived: he must be over the worst now. Buy some dioralyte (it’s BRILLIANT, and just blackcurranty and fairly pleasant), only let him have toast or any of the BRAT things, and make sure he goes to bed early. I strongly imagine he will be ok tomorrow. As for spreading it round the plane, to be honest, it is most unlikely he will still be ill tomorrow and these things spread because people don’t wash their hands. Have a lovely holiday, some nice weather will perk him up Smile But yes, do take out TI next time!

1981m · 21/03/2018 12:42

Sorry, by lots I meant lots of sick! Not that he was sick lots of times. He was sick once on Monday with food, then sick with food around 2am last night and then once more with bile/water between 2-3am last night. Dh got up with him so not sure. He's been having sips of water so guess sucking that up.

He wants to get out of bed but I am insisting he stays in bed.

I would never end up in this situation so can't comment

Travelling without insurance Is a fools game see it all the time with work

Google Costs Op of re pat and being medi vacked from a LH destination

I don't mean for this but for any manner of accident or illness that can occur

Shocking

ValueAddedTits · 21/03/2018 12:44

I flew long haul last year after two of mine were vomiting until 2am. We left for the airport at 9am and had no issues. They had vomited it all out. In fact they were knackered and slept the whole journey, which made it easier.

None of the rest of us fell ill. I would go.

Yukbuck · 21/03/2018 12:46

I honestly think he will be fine.
I took dioralyte once when I had a sickness and diharoea and it stopped it. Has he got the runs?

MarthasGinYard · 21/03/2018 12:46

Not rubbing in

Stating facts which Op was clearly oblivious to

minionsrule · 21/03/2018 12:47

OP forget about the money and all the other passengers for a minute and think about your son.
He has been on off vomiting for a few days, he has barely eaten, he will no doubt be dehydrated as well as feeling crap.
You want to wake him up early so deprive him of sleep which will slow his recovery. Then you take him on a long haul flight which will exasperate his dehydration and make him feel worse than he does already.
For his sake please delay, take the decision now and hopefully you can reschedule without too much extra cost even if it means losing a day or two .

ShellyBoobs · 21/03/2018 12:47

You say you're 'not a dishonest person' yet you're asking whether the insurance co' could find out your son was already sick when you took out a policy with them.

If you're not thinking about committing fraud why does it matter?

Of course you can't legitimately claim for something which you already knew when you took out the policy.

How on earth do you think insurance works?

1981m · 21/03/2018 12:47

No runs at all. No other symptoms but being sick. Was complaining of sore throat and his heart hurt yesterday but no complaints with that today. Keep checking he has no rash or temperature

OP posts:
BarbarianMum · 21/03/2018 12:48

Hand on heart then. In your position OP I would fly if he doesn't vomit anymore, and not if he did, or if you or your dh started coming down with it. If we didn't go I would not try and claim the cost on my travel insurance, partly because I'm not a thief and partly out of fear of getting caught and prosecuted.

1981m · 21/03/2018 12:49

Wow value- that was good going! Not sure I d have been that brave. Worried about the flight with 3 and 5 yo anyway, it's the longest we ve flown with them, without throwing sickness into it.

OP posts:
Yukbuck · 21/03/2018 12:49

In fact, the time I took the dioralyte I took because I had a train journey I could not miss. I'm very rarely ill . I was skint and couldn't afford amother train. I HAD to get back because I had to hand in a uni assignment. There was no way around it as that was the deadline. I also had work.
I went on the train.. made sure I sat not next to people and I was fine.
Life sometimes has to go on and the likelihood of someone catching it is slim.
