What shall I do about this holiday?

Not AIBU but need speedy reply with advice.

Ds (5) was sick on Monday in the night (now Wednesday here in Uk), lots of sick. Kept him off school yesterday and had a sofa day. He was fine in himself mostly. Up and down. Lying down sometimes but also jumping around. Saying his heart was hurting. No other symptoms except being sick.

Wasn't sure what to give him food wise. He had toast with butter for b fast and no lunch. Bacon sandwich for dinner with bread and butter. Dh thinks silly to give this. Was a bacon sandwich wrong?

Anyway, ds sick again last night, tiny amount of sick. Then a further three times with just water and bile. Again no other symptoms.

The problem is we are going on a long haul holiday tomorrow morning. We are meant to get up at 5 am, drive for two hours to the airport, then do 7 hour flight! We don't know if we should cancel holiday or still go. We would loose the total price of the holiday to cancel £6,500. Or £200 per person to try and change dates on it with hotel provider. The flights look like they are non- transferable and we would loose the cost automatically. We don't have travel insurance.

Dh wants to go and reckons its just a stomach bug. He reckons if we stave ds today and on the flight it will be ok. Reckons its a 24 hour bug.

I am reluctant as worried he will be sick again in the night. Worried about having strange food in a hot place will just make him sick again and he will just want to rest all holiday. Think the holiday will be ruined with moany ds. Don't want to risk taking him on long flight if he's ill, could be a nightmare. But we stand to loose £6,500 if we don't.

Frankly I'd be pretty pissed off if you went on holiday knowing your Ds was puking and not know if it was contagious or not- especially in the confines of a 7 hr flight ( with all that recycled air)
. I take medication for a chronic autoimmune condition which means I am immunocompromised...I can still function, work , go on holiday but I have to be careful around 'Ill people' who may pass on their illness to me with dire consequences
When I book my longed for holiday, I always take out Insurance at the same time, to cover all eventualities in case I'm ill at time of holiday and have to cancel....this is what holiday insurance is for...I suggest you be more responsible in future
And if the airline discover your Ds is I'll you could be asked to leave the flight ...people like you really annoy me

PushMyButton · 21/03/2018 10:53

"Op I know someone who was in the same situation and booked the insurance then claimed on it saying their DS was sick on the morning the flight was due to leave. They got the money from the insurance but were very very lucky." @Chocywockydodahhhhhh

They weren't lucky... That's fraud...

@Bumblesnuff4Crimpysnitch finally some sense. People's attitudes on insurance never cease to amaze me, and terrify me. I've been involved in claims that ran into the millions and yet people think they don't need to bother

RestingBitchFaced · 21/03/2018 10:55

Pack and get ready to go and decide at last minute. If he doesn't get any worse I would go

GabsAlot · 21/03/2018 11:04

then insurance wont pay out they'll find out it was a pre existing condition and then you'll be stuck

just change your flights and suck up the costs

if youre going caribbean aswell i woujldnt suggest any tap water or buffet type food for him

MarthasGinYard · 21/03/2018 11:13

Bloody hell

Irresponsible idiots actually book hols like this with no TI

But as parents

Bloody awful behaviour

Hope your ds better soon

Don't fly with him sick. Full stop.

Lifeisabeach09 · 21/03/2018 11:52

OP, I don't take out travel insurance until last minute (a week to a few days before travel (it varies) but I sometimes get an annual policy.
Only cancelled a trip once (by this, I mean didn't turn up at airport and check in-didn't call) as my dd was ill day of travel. Went to doctor's day after and got a sick note for her, which I sent to insurer's and claimed.
If he is clear for 24 hours, I'd definitely go. Is he keeping down fluids?
As PP have said, keep food bland and basic. Push fluids. Dioralyte/squash are good.
I highly doubt he is very contagious otherwise the whole family would be ill.

1981m · 21/03/2018 12:02

We now have travel insurance. It's the kind that covers luggage, illness, missed flights etc. Started from today. Going away in July too so that's now covered as got annual insurance.

Would they be able to investigate if ds was off school then? I sent an email to the teacher. Can they get access to this?

I am not going to take him to the doctor. He's not that unwell plus that shows a illness before travel.

He's just eaten a banana very slowly and is sipping water. He's spending the day in bed. I think I stupidly made it worse giving him butter and bacon yesterday. I think if he hadn't had that he wouldn't have been sick last night.

Trouble is we don't have 36 hours to see if he's ok, we barely have 24 hours. He was last sick at 2am this morning, excluding the water and bile he sicked up twice more. We have to leave at 5am tomorrow morning. If he's sick in the night and we don't give the 2 hrs we re cancelling notification it's seen as a no show and loose entire cost.

It's not the Caribbean

LagunaBubbles · 21/03/2018 12:04

Yes very stupid not having it. Must admit didn't think. Never needed it before and ds is never sick

Im not giving a lecture as there is no point but Im just genuinely bewildered at this, its not just about children - you and your DH can get sick, have an accident etc to.

1981m · 21/03/2018 12:06

Another twist. Today is stressful. We didn't think we had travel insurance through our bank account. We were paying extra for a premium account but cancelled it.

Rung up our bank and they think we still have it! Have old address which we haven't lived in for 5 years. We haven't been paying monthly debit for this account. They are investigating it. But I am assuming it would be invalid anyway as it's the wrong address, and we haven't been paying for it. I also don't think it's family insurance, just covers dh and I or possibly ds. However, this is not our fault, we cancelled it, so could we argue it's valid?

LIZS · 21/03/2018 12:07

Insurance may well be dubious about a policy taken out one day and claimed on the next, and make further enquiries. Even sicking up water and bile counts as being sick. However it sounds like you have made up your minds to go regardless Hmm

blackteasplease · 21/03/2018 12:08

Just re the foods, don't give dairy. The butter will have been the worst thing yesteday. GPs have always advised fizzy drinks (to replace liquid and sugar) and an apple.

Potatoes are a great first food as plain and not made of wheat.

BarbarianMum · 21/03/2018 12:09

Yeah I don't think you need our help to defraud your insurance OP, I think you'll need to manage that on your own. Hmm

MarthasGinYard · 21/03/2018 12:10

'excluding the water and bile he sicked up twice more. '

This is sick

I work in aviation and we would not welcome this onboard. You also need to think of IM compromised travellers.

MarthasGinYard · 21/03/2018 12:11

Although reading further about how you operate I'm not sure this would cross your mind Hmm

pepperpot99 · 21/03/2018 12:13

The fact that you aren't taking your ds to the doctor "because it shows illness before travel" really clarifies your selfishness and greed, OP. You actually care far more about the cash than your son's health judging from your posts.

If my dd had 'never been ill' and then started vomiting for a number of days I would be down to the doctor's surgery pronto. You, on the other hand, don not appear to give a shit.

pepperpot99 · 21/03/2018 12:15

Any defrauding of the travel company or insurance will be uncovered. Of course they will have access to correspondence between you and the school- they aren't stupid you know.

Clevs · 21/03/2018 12:17

All those people saying not to let him kiss anyone, use hand gel, don't touch anything etc. - do you realise that everyone else on that plane is going to be breathing in the same shitty air? It's not fair on the immuno-compromised or anyone else for that matter. I wouldn't be impressed if I got ill from someone off a plane and it could have been prevented.

What's wrong with doing as someone suggested and making sure he's clear for another day or two and just having a shorter holiday? Surely your child's health is more important?Confused

A change in diet can cause upset stomachs even if food is cooked properly. It could prolong his symptoms and spoil the holiday completely just by eating different food.

Personally I wouldn't risk it for the sake of everyone else on the plane and the child's comfort and wellbeing.

On another thread someone was extolling the virtues of a new payment card called Revolut. It works with your mobile phone and in order to find out more than the bare minimum about it you have to give them your mobile number. It's a great international payment system (no charges for making payments in dollars, euros or any one of dozens of foreign currencies) but where it becomes relevant to this thread is that there is an option to have automatic "travel insurance" which is activated the minute it detects you are on a phone network abroad. The cover costs £0.99 per day... no cheating possible as it knows precisely where you are. The insurance it provides is for health cover - and you can add fellow travellers (spouse, children etc) up to 8 hours after it detects you are abroad.
I'm definitely going to start using it when my annual insurance policy lapses this summer.

When travelling, I always love the great taste of Coke. Cool and refreshing, it's a welcome pick me up at any time. Available worldwide, Coca-Cola is definitely the drink for me this summer.

Quartz2208 · 21/03/2018 12:22

Thing is though with the rotavirus he could be contagious for up to 2 weeks - I would be surprised if many flights go ahead without someone being vaguely contagious with something. Its the spreading of fluids which cause the issue - i.e. directly being sick

I would say the second lot was entirely the bacon and butter and if he remains sick free for 24 hours for the flight then he is fine.

And no need with sickness bugs to do to the doctors - I didnt when my have recently had them why would you

It does make me wonder though the times I got completely airsick and threw up the entire flight that I had come on board what people thought (and it was defintily airsickness)

Mybrows · 21/03/2018 12:26

If it's a sickness bug you'll all probably catch it and be ill on holiday.

GeorgeTheHippo · 21/03/2018 12:26

"excluding the water and bile he sicked up twice more"

You can't exclude that That's still vomiting.

Quartz2208 · 21/03/2018 12:27

Not necessarily with the catching DD had norovirus (really bad norovirus) and no one else caught it!

Glumglowworm · 21/03/2018 12:28

Sucking up water and bile still counts as being sick

Going on a plane with a sickness bug is monumentally selfish.

Taking out insurance now and pretending he wasn’t already ill is fraud. Insurance fraud costs everyone as companies put prices up to cover it.

You were incredibly stupid not to take out travel insurance before.

Giving a sick child a bacon sandwich was also ridiculous.

So yeah. Stupid, selfish and happy to omit fraud. Fucking hell.

Glumglowworm · 21/03/2018 12:28

Happy to commit fraud not omit.

shesakeeper · 21/03/2018 12:28

He's throwing up water and bile?! That's a nasty sickness bug!
