To think my manager will fire me tomorrow?!

I work in a department of a national company with four other people in my role and then a manager. Been there for six months and just passed my probation period.

We all get on really really well and have a WhatsApp group chat to discuss any issues. In January because of a great performance we were guaranteed our bonus to be paid at the end of March - usually we would have to wait another month for final March figures to be calculated but because it was guaranteed then apparently not.

Today (payroll cut off date) we all receive a letter to our home address, no apology for the misinformation advising our bonus would now be paid in April. When we got home we went onto the group chat to question this with our manager as obviously we had all mentally spent this money.

As much as it isnt the managers fault, I said something like that it was all premeditated to send the letter at payroll cut off because of the new financial year in April. And then asked how we can sell jobs to potential candidates if we get treated like this too and its making it very difficult to have belief in the company.

So my Manager kicks off and said theyre sick of the moaning and if any of us doesnt like working there to leave - fair enough. I left it half an hour and sent a personal apology to the manager for what I said to be told we will pick this up tomorrow.

I've now got it in my head I'm going to be fired tomorrow, does anyone know if its a sackable offence?!

I think the thing that strikes me on rereading is the manager also behaved unprofessionally. It's not ok for her to say she's sick of the moaning and if you don't like it leave. It makes me wonder what the hell kinda company this is.

The op has totally stepped over the mark, she's going on like she's not getting her bonus and the reality is it's just delayed four weeks. She's accused them of doing it on purpose, when there could have been a processing issue and then stated that she can't really do her job because she finds it hard to believe in the company.

So whereas her behaviour is far from acceptable, it's not even understandable, I can't say I find the managers acceptable either. Hers is Understandable, but not acceptable.

Seeing as you only contributed to part of the year you should have been pleased you wete even getting a bonus at all, let alone kicking off about it being delayed! What on earth were you thinking?!! Shock

Be prepared to be put in your place today and then learn from it and don't do the same again.

Nothing happened at all - we came in and had our morning meeting about the bonus. She agreed we were all cotrect to feel the way we did and then we moved on and got on with our work.

A lot of worry over pretty much nothing really!

That’s good OP

I didn’t think you’d be sacked, but probably wise just to inwardly fume about these things in future!

Mumsnet is a funny place though, posts about grovelling to your employer etc. As if people should only ever display undying gratitude for their employer for giving them a job and not speak up about things that upset them.

BattleaxeGalactica · 21/03/2018 10:21

You've had a lucky escape.

Personally I would delete the WA group and never post anything about work anywhere ever again. Even in a private group you cannot trust people not to twist things or bleat to management to your detriment. If it ain't there they can't do it.

incywincybitofa · 21/03/2018 14:22

I think what you may have forgotten in your moaning is that your boss is paid for the hours she works, and at home she has a life that isn't work.

Cannonfodder · 21/03/2018 14:24

Well that’s good then. Lesson learnt hopefully?

GrannyGrissle · 21/03/2018 14:40

Ah well. It was a good thread thank you OP. We need more of them.

JennyJames · 21/03/2018 16:53

What on Earth are you on about yellow? Many jobs are totally bonus related. If your told “bill £x revenue and get 5% as a bonus” why the hell shouldn’t you expect it?

Sales jobs are all bonus related. You’re bonkers if you think anyone works for £18k a year with the promise of a sales related bonus (usually contractually confirmed BTW) and then just shrugs when they don’t get it. What sort of world do you live in?!

I, and every company I’ve worked for, would term that ‘commission’, not bonus.

A lot of worry over pretty much nothing really!

It does not mean that the manager has forgotten or does not think it is a big deal. She is reeling back, after realising she was unprofessional on whatsapp as well. Unfortunately, the balance of power is with your manager and what your manager does not say (because that is what professional people do) does not mean she does not act on it in the future in a way that is to your detriment..

You do still need watch yourself and not minimise this.
