Just seen this thread in my news feed. Man with 90% tattoos on his body. He beat cancer in his early 20’s and became what I would describe as addicted to tattoos to redefine himself after his illness. Apart from the fact that I’d never in a million years do this to my body, I would have thought it potentially dangerous if the cancer comes back as it could be missed or the mri giving false readings. www.thesun.co.uk/news/5856185/adam-curlykale-tattoo-90-percent-of-his-body-instagram/

Lots of people do things that increase the risks of getting cancer or of making diagnosis harder. I don't know that he should be singled out particularly over the smokers / drinkers / processed meat eaters / sunbathers etc.

namechangefriday · 20/03/2018 15:57

Not sure how a tattoo would mean he misses cancer recurrence and pretty sure they don't affect the accuracy of mri's., although it's ct and pet scans that generally are used to diagnose cancer.

Good for him if it makes him happy

MadRainbow · 20/03/2018 16:00

Pretty certain tattoos have nothing to do with missing cancer, could be wrong but it only affects the top few layers of skin.

At least he's not hurting anyone except himself

Imsosceptical · 20/03/2018 16:02

Tattoos don't cause cancer, having cancer is pretty horrific, have you had cancer?? NO, I suspect not, don't question how someone diagnosed with cancer chooses to deal with it, the fight is the fight, the aftermath and psychological effects tend to occur afterwards, Im so shocked you would question someone who has faced this devastation and their choices afterwards, shame on you...

Mummyoflittledragon · 20/03/2018 16:06

Imsosceptical
You are misreading my words. I’m concerned for him. I would hate a young man to be ill or die because of this. I should not have to feel shame. I have read tattoos can cause cancer. Perhaps it was bs.

What a ridiculous post. I echo Imsosceptical - shame on you for making calls on what cancer sufferers (and anyone else for that matter) should or shouldn't do. Who are you to judge?

Mummyoflittledragon · 20/03/2018 16:09

TwitterQueen
I’m shocked because I think from what I’ve read he’s hurting himself. I didn’t mean to cause offence.

Good Lord that's horrendous. Not sure of the cancer link but why the fuck do people do such shit to their bodies.

I'd say he has MH issues seeing that.

Greenyogagirl · 20/03/2018 16:11

You shouldn’t really throw the word addict around, so what if he wants to decorate himself. Tattoos do not cause cancer and I think making a decision to be who you want to be after cancer should be applauded

Mummyoflittledragon · 20/03/2018 16:14

This is what I’m talking about btw. Immune issues, misdiagnosis. www.medicaldaily.com/tattoos-affect-your-health-long-term-side-effects-ink-has-your-immune-system-404404 I didn’t put this in my op because I thought it was tmi for the op. It didn’t occur to me to think of it as shaming someone.

For the love of god. Tattoos do not cause cancer. Grow up and do some basic research before you start spouting complete nonsense!

Rawhh · 20/03/2018 16:23

I'm sure that a man who has never met you is very grateful for your concern Hmm. However, he is an adult who can do as he wishes with his own body.

Or alternatively, he could think you are incredibly condescending and should come down off your pedestal.

I find it bizarre that you felt the need to post this thread.

mancmummy1414 · 20/03/2018 16:33

YABU for encouraging traffic to the sun

ChaosAndPiss · 20/03/2018 16:36

Good Lord that's horrendous. Not sure of the cancer link but why the fuck do people do such shit to their bodies.

Because it's their body and they can do what they like with it?

PipGirl404 · 20/03/2018 16:40

It's nothing to do with you, it's his body.
Take your fucking 1950's disgust at tattoos and get in the fucking bin.

Can't stand it when people feel they've got the right to comment on other peoples aesthetics. Doesn't bother you, so feck off?!

KittenBeast · 20/03/2018 16:44

Tattoos, I imagine, have no bearing on whether cancer is picked up. Having said that perhaps it'd make melanoma more difficult to detect. But, his body, so meh. I love tattoos, have 5, and don't consider it to be hurting myself.

8misskitty8 · 20/03/2018 16:52

Mummyoflittledragon are you also concerned about the thousands of people who drink alcohol and smoke ?

Pretty sure they cause more cancers than a tattoo will.

steff13 · 20/03/2018 16:52

Well, if he had skin cancer, I'd think tattoos all over might be a bad idea, because it might indeed make it more difficult to pick up. However, his cancer was in his large intestine, so that tattoos shouldn't affect that.

I AM shocked that someone tattooed his eyeballs. That just seems like a terrible idea all the way around

GreenSeededGrape · 20/03/2018 16:55

No Chaos because it's not normal to do that to your own body.

scatterolight · 20/03/2018 16:58

"Adam works as a psychologist".

Oh the irony.

GrannyGrissle · 20/03/2018 17:02

As a female who has chosen to tattoo 80% of my body no, i think he has chosen to do whatever he likes with his body knowing more than most how short life can be. The only problem may be in MRI machines if crap, poor quality (not of UK standards ie. off the internet from some dodgy company) ink has been usdd. Any metal particles may heat up but he would be told of this prior to commencement of the mRI scan and given the standard panic alarm button incase.
As the only ink i've ever been tattooed with or tattooed a client with has been bought from reputable UK suppliers with ingredient lists included (which had to be provided in the shop for environmental health) i am not concerned there are any health issues there. If however, you've been getting tattooed by Dodgy Dave the scratcher in his shed then erm yeah, a lot of cheap American inks contain carcinogens banned in the UK.

Mummyoflittledragon · 20/03/2018 17:03

PipGirl
It’s got naff all to do with 1950’s disgust - the full face colour looks amazing.

And I read up on the ink potentially being cancer causing. The European Chemicals Agency are currently consulting as “some inks may contain impurities with hazardous properties, such as carcinogenic, mutagenic or reprotoxic.”

Steff
Apparently particles from the ink do migrate around the body so not just skin.

8kitty
Yes you’re right. I cannot be concerned about everyone.

Cross post. Thanks. That’s really interesting information. You’re right. Life is short.
