…to think it doesn't take 45 minutes to cook fish finger sandwiches?

Bear with me, I am in early pregnancy, tired and grumpy and have a funny appetite.

I suggested fish finger sandwiches for dinner as I wanted something easy that wasn't going to make me feel sick. DH suggested he sort it out. Nice. Fine.

They have just been served up 45 minutes later. He was in the kitchen the whole time. AIBU to think this is a bit ridiculous?

I'm relieved I'm not the only one with a faffing husband!
I'm pregnant too but I wouldn't let him cook because I'd be murderous by the time anything was done (and it would be a crap plain pasta with a blob of sauce or cheese Envy)
Instead I let him deal with dd while I do the dinner

ApocalypseNowt, I am howling with laughter at your timeline, especially the leaning regime.

Men and their leaning.

clairedelalune · 19/03/2018 22:04

For a second I thought my mum had joined mumsnet and posted about my dad, then I read your post. My dad takes thirty five minutes to put bread in toaster and butter it.....

paranoidpammywhammy2 · 19/03/2018 22:06

At least ApocalypseNowt DH knows how to use a colander!

The leaning/hardcore leaning is so true.

RaindropsAndSparkles · 19/03/2018 22:07

I made dh a fish finger sandwich after our third date.

White bread with butter. Smear of ketchup. Layer of salt and vinegar crisps. Add four fish fingers.

He loved it. He told me he loved me about 30 mins later. Nearly 30 years ago. Fish finger sandwiche are v v important.

HicDraconis · 19/03/2018 22:11

TheSnowFairy nope, we microwave them here too! Zap in microwave then pan fry to crisp the edges - takes 5 mins tops. Defrost bread and spread with mayo / tomato ketchup (depending on who sandwich is for) while fishfingers in frying pan, transfer to bottom slice of bread and top with grated cheese and lettuce, put top slice on. 45 minutes I'd think DH had gone to the shops to get the fish fingers first because we had inexplicably run out!

keepingbees · 19/03/2018 22:14

My DH is the same, he can spin out making the simplest meal. I've snapped many a time when I've been starving and gone to see what on earth he's doing.
Mostly seems to involve a lot of faffing and incorporating as many plates, bowls, pans and cutlery items as possibly.
When the food eventually arrives it's usually cold, bland, under or over cooked, and a tiny portion because he either didn't cook enough or he decided to only serve half of what he made Confused

You know when you've got a UTI and you're peeing a teaspoon full of daggers every five minutes so you're staying in bed with a hot water bottle because it's near the only loo in the house with a lock on the door and he says "Can I get you anything" and you say "Can I have cranberry juice and a slice of toast?" and it takes an hour? How? How? Even if we had no bread, butter or cranberry juice there's a corner shop 300 yards away that is even open on Christmas bloody day!

Crispbutty · 19/03/2018 22:25

I could do it in ten mins. Pan fry fishfingers in shallow oil. I find them taste so much better than oven cooked, and crispier.

thegreatbeyond · 19/03/2018 22:30

My DH can go one better - 25 minutes to heat an Ella's Kitchen pouch!

Onlyoldontheoutside · 19/03/2018 22:32

Fish fingers from scratch only take 20 mins.Oven warming while you sort the fish which only take 10 mins in a hot oven, time for oven chips too and to butter some bread.

TenancyTroublesAgain · 19/03/2018 23:07

Fry them. Done in 10.

QueenArseClangers · 19/03/2018 23:20

He’s only excused if the fish fingers are these ones.

My OH was 'making dinner' one evening as I was marking exam papers. I'd got some bolognese sauce, that I'd made previously, out of the freezer and defrosted it earlier in the afternoon, then I told him to cook some pasta, heat up the sauce and grate some parmesan cheese. Two and a half hours later we had a tepid meal on cold plates, he apparently couldn't manage the pasta and the sauce at the same time, he did one then the other without keeping anything hot!

MrsCrabbyTree · 19/03/2018 23:30

Hope I can help you feel better about your DH. My housemate would take 1hour 10 minutes! (I have timed it - twice) Our house has a smart meter and her oven use is 1/3 of our everyday electricity usage. Shock

I can cook a whole roast chicken dinner in 1hr 20 minutes, so can't fathom how her frozen fish fingers, chicken nuggets etc aren't little dried out balls of yuckiness.

HermioneKipper · 19/03/2018 23:34

My DH is exactly the same and it drives me bonkers. Constant faffing, takes ages to take out plates, ingredients, weighs everything out and follows a recipe to the letter. At least half an hour to chop things up etc. And uses every pan/utensil in the house. I now find it easier to do all the cooking myself or i would kill him

Contesse · 19/03/2018 23:41

My ex once took 2 hours and used every pot and pan we had to make steak and salad. And then expecteda medal or something. Could have done it myself with almost no mess inside 15 minutes.

sourpatchkid · 20/03/2018 12:50

What?! @thegreatbeyond wins!!

dinosaursandtea · 20/03/2018 12:57

I’m too lazy to check the box so I came on here to heck how long to leave them in. Thanks, guys!

nooka · 21/03/2018 18:28

I'm the faffer in our household. apocalypsenowt's account sounded eerily like me Grin The leaning is for daydreaming :) Particularly when making tea when I often find I've forgotten key steps like putting the teabags in the pot or to pour out the tea even though I'll have all the mugs ready with milk. Delays in dh's cooking will be more because he has decided to clean the kitchen or some other more worthy task. He does do the shower thing though.

I can't eat fishfinger sandwiches any more :(

elspinsdemariscal · 21/03/2018 18:32

ApocalypseNowt Grin

Aragog · 21/03/2018 18:34

Depends on how long the over takes to heat up if cooking in there - easily would reach 15-20 min to heat up, 15-20 min to cook, few min to serve.

Grill wouldd be quicker.

Autumnchill · 21/03/2018 18:40

Are you married to my husband? Any recipe in Jamie's 15 minutes takes him at least an hour and a 15 minute baked egg recipe took him an hour and half! It's amazing to watch how much faffing he does.
