…to think it doesn't take 45 minutes to cook fish finger sandwiches?

WazFlimFlam · 19/03/2018 19:58

Bear with me, I am in early pregnancy, tired and grumpy and have a funny appetite.

I suggested fish finger sandwiches for dinner as I wanted something easy that wasn't going to make me feel sick. DH suggested he sort it out. Nice. Fine.

They have just been served up 45 minutes later. He was in the kitchen the whole time. AIBU to think this is a bit ridiculous?

i always pre-heat the oven. never thought about it until now. have i been hoodwinked by an oven/energy industry conspiracy?! evil bastards.

MaryPoppinsStoleMyHandbag · 19/03/2018 20:20

Have never preheated an oven, especially not for 20 mins. Fish fingers take 12-14 min to cook in mine.

BitOutOfPractice · 19/03/2018 20:20

I have discovered only recently what a massive difference it makes if you heat the baking tray up

BitOutOfPractice · 19/03/2018 20:20

Only 5 minutes though, not 20

CisPinkHoodie · 19/03/2018 20:21

Eh? Just grill or fry them. 15 minutes, tops

ohtheholidays · 19/03/2018 20:22

I'm not surprised you were fed up.

15-20 minutes it would take me to make fish finger sandwiches,in 45 minutes I could have made some cupcakes or shortbread as well.

My DH used to take ages to cook anything but with 5DC he's learned to get alot quicker thankfully.

anneoneill · 19/03/2018 20:22

Get your own food and there'll be no rows.

I can only imagine the vitriol if you were posting that your husband complained you were too slow in the kitchen, and that it had caused rows in the past.

PattiStanger · 19/03/2018 20:23

20 minutes for the oven to heat up, that's got to be a typo

I can do them using the grill in about 10-12 minutes

diddl · 19/03/2018 20:24

20mins to preheat an oven?

45mins is ridiculous for fish fingers!

persypear · 19/03/2018 20:26

Yep, 20-25 mins from frozen and cold oven here. 45 minutes and I would be eating my own hands. Lets hope he also did a mountain of washing up while he was out there.

WazFlimFlam · 19/03/2018 20:27

Onholiday you hadto have FIVE CHILDREN to give your husband some sense of urgency?

Agree it’s fucking annoying.

My DH sometimes offers to make dinner at the weekend. Bearing in mind DD eats 5.30/6.00, I’ll invariably have to start gently “reminding” him of this fact at about 5pm. Cut to 6.30pm, hangry toddler and some pasta I could have run up in 10 minutes.

However, you can’t say anything, just quietly seethe and say thank you!

I’m reminded of my DSis who always jokes she deliberately makes bad tea so I do it instead Grin

AsMuchUseAsAMarzipanDildo · 19/03/2018 20:28

persypear nah! He’ll blatantly have used every pot and pan to cook said fishfinger sandwich.

starzig · 19/03/2018 20:30

You gotta clean the kitchen and do the dishes before you start.

sourpatchkid · 19/03/2018 20:31

Yep my DH does this too. It once took him 6 hours to do a Xmas dinner ... which sounds fine except it was almost all microwaveable Shock

liquidrevolution · 19/03/2018 20:34

Dont need to preheat fan ovens. In fact Mary berry says to switch on just before putting cakes in or they get overcooked on the outside.

00100001 · 19/03/2018 20:35

My DH must be related to yours.

He tool 40 minutes to not have a shower Confused we had friends coming for dinner at 7pm. He walks through the door at 6. Mooched around a bit, then 20 minutes later or so declared he was having a shower. Called up to him to set the table 40 minutes later asking him to lay the table. And he pops his head out of the bathroom saying "I'm just getting in the shower " Angry

ScreamingValenta · 19/03/2018 20:36

Grilling them is much quicker than baking them.

Emma198 · 19/03/2018 20:36

My husband is a fanny abouter as well. There's worse things he could be. X

MammaH2018 · 19/03/2018 20:41

You can grill them in about 10-15mins. The whole thing shouldn’t have taken him any longer than 20mins (heating grill up, buttering bread, grilling them and then putting the sarnie together) What the heck was he doing in there?!

Echobelly · 19/03/2018 20:41

My husband does sometimes seem to just guess how long anything will take to cook rather than actually checking.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 19/03/2018 20:44

echo my husband literally only checks when he can smell it —burning—

ohtheholidays · 19/03/2018 20:44

Wazflimflam Haha No!

I'm patient but even for me that would be taking the piss,I already had 4DC when I met my DH,a year after we had our 5th DC I got ill so he had to start doing most of the cooking.

windchimesabotage · 19/03/2018 20:45

I sympathise.
My husband said hed bring me breakfast in bed the other day. Great thats really lovely I said! Im heavily pregnant.

an hour later I go downstairs and hes just sat there.... he completely forgot to make the breakfast.
I was so angry because I get quite bad morning sickness which is exacerbated by hunger and I could easily have made myself some breakfast and not got sick but I thought id just be patient as he was doing a nice thing!!

I feel your pain.

But tbh I think pregnancy makes us a bit unreasonable about stuff like this. It just makes you see red honestly, when usually youd just be like 'meh'

happymummy12345 · 19/03/2018 20:46

5 minutes for the oven to heat up, 15 minutes to cook them, butter bread while they cook, then literally a couple of minutes to put the fish fingers on the bread, add ketchup (the only way to eat fish finger sandwiches), cut, and put on plate. I could have that done within 25 minutes.
(Who's oven takes 20 minutes to heat up?)
