Won on a gambling site but they won’t pay me?

  • posting for traffic sorry!

So now and again I put a little money on a gambling app, my really name is Terry, but different variations of this were all taken when I signed up, so I used something like ‘terrie2478’
I’ve now won a fairly large amount of money (to me) and a lady I spoke to today has said they may not have to pay it out due to this name, as it won’t match with my ID they have requested to see. I’m not panicking so much that she’s right and I won’t see this money but also if I ring and ask they might then say it (even if it wasn’t a reason before) I’ve been googling like crazy and from google I don’t think I’ll be seeing a penny Confused silly silly me!
Has anyone been in a situation like this or have any advice? Please

Yes it’s just a username, my actual name on there is spelt correctly. I just did it because I didn’t think of a username and I didn’t realise how important it is. Absolutely kicking myself now!

But you can't have duplications of user names, so what happens when there are two Terry's??

Ducktalesooooh · 18/03/2018 19:35

Is your account registered in the name in your ID?

PurplePotatoes · 18/03/2018 19:36

That can't be right surely...I've never been on a gambling site but you could have picked any name in the world as your user name! Who is the woman who told you this?

WellWellWellifitisntyou · 18/03/2018 19:44

OP this is horrible of them and sounds baffling. You say that this is a lot of money to you, as such you should seek legal advice. Research online for solicitors who have experience of disputes such as these. I remember reading about another site that wouldn't pay up. There's no point speculating, you need to know where you stand. I hope that you can get right assistance.

Justanotherlurker · 18/03/2018 19:46

I play in online poker quite a bit and have different usernames, I have never come across this.

Usernames have to be unique so I doubt it is about that, unless the site you are using is very underhand and dodgy, if its a UK high street name etc then it would not be around your username but personal ID on your file, is the address correct, card registered to the address etc?

NameyMcChangeRae · 18/03/2018 19:48

There was a you and yours (bbcradio4) programme about this. They’ll try anything to avoid paying you. I’d let them know that you expect the money to be paid in the next week, and if it’s not you’ll be complaining to the regulating body

ClangerTwanger · 19/03/2018 16:38

That’s absolutely horse crap. So when people have names like ‘hopeiwin2851’ etc then they don’t get paid as it’s not a true representation of their real name? I call bull crap. That company sounds shocking. Agree with pp who said to demand your money and threaten them with reporting to gambling commissions etc. Don’t back down!!

Crowd · 19/03/2018 16:42

Mention IBAS to them OP! That sucks!

notapizzaeater · 19/03/2018 16:44

Does anyone use there real names as a user name ? They just trying it on.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 19/03/2018 16:44

My passport definitely doesn't say BreakfastAtSquiffanys

MrsFionaCharming · 19/03/2018 16:46

I work in online verification for a gambling company. Usernames don’t come into the verification process at all, I think there must have been a miscommunication somewhere.

Can you post a screenshot of the message they send you?

angryburd · 19/03/2018 16:48

I think to be able to collect money/register with gambling sites you have to submit ID to prove that you are legally able to gamble. Is this what they mean?

rjay123 · 19/03/2018 17:00

What’s the site? I’ll check the T&Cs for yo

DGRossetti · 19/03/2018 17:03

I think to be able to collect money/register with gambling sites you have to submit ID to prove that you are legally able to gamble.

I suspect the onus is on the site to do this before they take someones money ....

angryburd · 19/03/2018 17:05

^you'd be surprised. If they find out the account holder isn't old enough to gamble, all they're obliged to do is return the stake.

lilcolibri · 19/03/2018 17:11

What woman told you this?

Someone actually from the site or someone jealous and spiteful who you've told?

swivelchair · 19/03/2018 17:13

Username has got nothing to do with your ID.

Is it a European site?

Faintlinesquints · 19/03/2018 17:13

My dh had this recently on a poker site. I'm not 100% sure exact details sorry, I could ask him if you like, but he was able to prove his ID and his email being linked to that username and they paid out. He went between email and calling customer service and it only took a few days.

ElderflowerWaterIsDelish · 19/03/2018 17:16

Which gambling site is it?...I'm just asking out of interest, because if other mumsnet ladies use the same site as you maybe they can help you better if they know which site you are referring to

Crispbutty · 19/03/2018 17:16

I play online on a lot of sites and it’s standard procedure for them to verify your ID before they pay out.

I’ve usually had to email my driving licence and a recent utility bill in order to receive winnings.

Blackteadrinker77 · 19/03/2018 17:16

They can't do that if your name is spelt correctly. The user name has no bearing.

They can ask for proof of funds and ID.

Oliversmumsarmy · 19/03/2018 17:18

Why did they allow the username to be linked with your id if it is not valid.?
