To only pay cleaner for what she worked

I am not sure if I Abu or not.

I've hired a new cleaner. She came once, house looked good. Next week she couldn't make it due to snow. I still paid her for this week. The week after she cleaned but I noticed she had just cleaned round things and there were crumbs baby had left under hallway table.
So getting to this week, I happened to be at home. She is hired to do 2 hours. She arrived at 11.45, I went out at 12. Before I left I asked if she ever had any left over time could she clean cupboard doors and windows.
After I left I realised I hadn't left money out for her so I did what I needed to do and rushed home. I was home for 13:20 and she was gone. I phoned her and apologised for forgetting to leave out the money and how can I get it to her. Explained I had rushed home trying to get her before she left. She said she left about 10 minutes ago. She asked me to do bank transfer or it could wait until next week. Cupboard doors and windows are not cleaned.

I then messaged her asking if she could confirm she was only there for an hour and a half (11.45-13.10). She said she didn't know but was there until after 1 and I could only pay her for the hour and a half if I wanted.

AIBU to only pay her for an hr and a half?

@ Elton
I wonder how many of the people posting on this thread would turn up at work and do their job when they weren’t being paid as agreed?

Many many people are paid in arrears by their employers. It's not unusual at all.

in this case there was nothing to indicate to the cleaner that she wouldn't get paid as agreed. If she'd really have thought this, she wouldn't have done the hour and a half that she did do.

seventh · 18/03/2018 13:40

but I'm so angry that I paid her for a week she wasn't even here and feel she has taken the Mickey

She has taken the mickey - our cleaning lady at work must think that we don't look at the toilets before we use them 😳😳😡

Bodicea · 18/03/2018 13:47

But Elton she wasn’t not going to pay her. To take the stance that she should have stopped the minute she realised the money wasn’t there, especially the week after her employer had paid her despite not turning up would be a bit ridiculous don’t you think? Surely she should have realised the OP might pop back to pay her before her assigned time was up. And even if she didn’t the right thing to do would be give her the benefit of the doubt and assume she would pay her in good time. I have forgotten to leave money out before and have taken the money to them
That evening. It’s not really a big deal.

What has any of this got to do with being a socialist? You have a massive chip on your shoulder!

himalayansalt · 18/03/2018 13:48

I, along with oooooh I'm guessing 90% of working people in the UK, have to work for a whole month before I get paid. Fancy!

ObiJuanKenobi · 18/03/2018 13:49

I think @Alabama3 has cleared up any confusion in that last post - very well put!

IThinkThatsWeird · 18/03/2018 13:49

Elton. I dont understand why you can’t understand what happened. It’s not complicated. I’m not sure why you are ranting about other posters who aren’t even on this thread. Its all very strange......

himalayansalt · 18/03/2018 13:50

Anyway, op, have you decided to part company with her? She is not reliable and trustworthy which is a shame but you live and learn.

Alabama3 · 18/03/2018 13:53

thanks @ObiJuanKenobi i just thought that @eltonjohnssyrup was struggling to understand

MsWanaBanana · 18/03/2018 14:02

Elton You’re sounding more and more ridiculous as this thread goes on. Everyone else gets it, so you’re either that stupid that you don’t, or you’re deliberately trolling just for the sake of it. Either way, do fuck off

GnotherGnu · 18/03/2018 14:06

But you agreed to leave the money for her. You didn’t

Elton, what part of the statement that OP rushed back in order to leave the money as agreed before the cleaner was due to leave are you struggling to understand?

YANBU OP.

Elton since when is paying a cleaner at the end of the agreed shift ‘entitled’? Confused

DrFoxtrot · 18/03/2018 14:18

Blimey

MyBrilliantDisguise · 18/03/2018 14:20

But why wouldn't the cleaner have just sent a text asking if the OP had put her money somewhere?

blaaake · 18/03/2018 14:22

Are you a dickhead @Eltonjohnssyrup ?

Eltonjohnssyrup · 18/03/2018 14:22

And OP. If you employ somebody on the cheap and pay them cash without checking their immigration status or paying a premium to include tax, national insurance or a pension then you get what you pay for.

Why don’t you get a cleaner through an agency so you have a proper contract in place and are entitled to have legal comeback if your expectations are not met?

I suspect the answer to that question is because you want it on the cheap and are prepared to exploit your employees. But you whinge if that bites you on the arse.

IThinkThatsWeird · 18/03/2018 14:24

Elton 🤦🏻‍♀️
I’ve got to admire your determination but I still think you are being contrary for the sake of it. I think your interpretation of what happened is completely ridiculous.

scaryteacher · 18/03/2018 14:34

Elton Mine doesn't get paid until she's finished either, but as she's paid by service cheques that I have to sign, which enable her to pay her social service contribution and get holiday pay, then she'd be idiotic to leave without them.

I think you are being a twit. If the OP was there, then it is obvious that the cleaner would be paid when she had finished, even if the OP did leave the house for a bit.

ObiJuanKenobi · 18/03/2018 14:36

Elton is a wind up merchant - surely no one could be so obtuse?

Eltonjohnssyrup · 18/03/2018 14:52

It’s a wind up to suggest that employees have a right to be paid as agreed or not do the job? Riiiiight.

Unfinishedkitchen · 18/03/2018 14:53

OP YANBU. Cut your losses as it will only get worse. You shouldn’t be having these issues so early on. She sounds like a chancer.

On the other hand this thread has turned into comedy gold with Elton claiming this is a left wing plot! Talk about having a chip on your shoulder... Put the bottle down Elton, it’s too early in the day to be this pissed! Grin

Eltonjohnssyrup · 18/03/2018 14:57

Okay. Let’s look look at this another way.

AIBU: I went to my cleaning job today. My payment was supposed to be left in cash. I worked for an hour and a half and noticed my employer had not left payment as agreed. She had not contacted me in the hour since she’d left. WIBU to go home and not go back to complete the job until I was paid?

blaaake · 18/03/2018 14:59

Do you get paid at the start of your shift Elton? The money was there waaay before the end of the cleaner's shift, so if she'd actually stayed for the contracted hours she'd have been paid there and then. You're making a lot of assumptions, for whatever your agenda is. Confused

blaaake · 18/03/2018 15:02

AIBU? I work as a cleaner for a generous woman, not to drip feed she paid me for a week off I had as I couldn't make it due to snow. Anyway, I was working but thought I'd finish the early as she wouldn't know and I couldn't be arsed doing my job. I noticed she'd forgot to leave me the money but she's usually super reliable, so will probably bank transfer it to me. AIBU to think she's a CF for being annoyed?

dustarr73 · 18/03/2018 15:12

Well @Elton just as well the op forgot to leave the money.Otherwise she would not have realised the cleaner fucked off home early. The cleaner is in the wrong and i would get rid.It will only get worse from here on in.
