That St Patrick's day is just being pushed an excuse for drunken excess?

St Patrick's day in the UK now just seems to have become a hyper-commercialised piss up - including the days before.

Coming home on the tube last night I a group of women wearing little green hats, one throwing up on the platform while the others laughed and the area I got off was full of pissed blokes in Ireland sports top generally being obnoxious and pissing outside the station.

It wasn't even St Patrick's day!

All the pubs/supermarkets seem to be promoting this time just as another excuse to get pissed.

As one of Irish descent I confirm that I will be drinking and misbehaving soon . Sorry!

I'm inclined to agree. It does just seem to be another date on the commercial calendar these days. That said, I think pubs etc that celebrate Irish music and culture will be doing that properly all year round, rather than just on St Patrick's day.

In Ireland, we get a bank holiday, so people tend to have parties, go out with friends etc.

I cringe seeing people doing stuff like the stupid little hats in the UK. Embarrassing IMO.

I don't understand your point, I'm sorry. I think I'd phrase it as "so". No one forces them to drink and have fun. They are all adults and can make that choice themselves.

What would you prefer. A more religious slant? A bit of praying and quiet contemplation?. I'm sure the ones who wish to are doing that and you can too. Nothing to stop you. You don't need to have any fun at all.

Irish here in Ireland. Pot of chilli on and watched the match with a coke zero. People don't really need an excuse to drink. Won't be any drinking in my home.

I must say, I am becoming more convinced that you are a bit jealous and bitter that YOU are not included in anything.

Having an Irish husband, we shall be celebrating BIG tonight (with our Irish family!) And we won't be pissing anywhere outside in an old football top!

Who are you suggesting is at fault for this, OP? Capitalism? Supermarkets? The advertising industry? Pubs? Irish people? English people for putting on leprechaun hats and puking on station platforms?

I think it always and ever has been for some. Although there might be quite a few very happy Irish rugby fans added to the number this weekend!

Live and let live is my motto. I hope those celebrating it have a total blast with their friends and family. Life's too short to begrudge others some fun or to judge how they chose to have that fun. As long as no one is hurt, it's all good.

I'm Irish living in Irish and yes you are right! But isn't that the fun of it! The one day a year where drinking at noon is acceptable!
I'm pregnant so unfortunately can't drink this year but will be making up for it next year.

I got in to a row last year because i was talking to a friend about a mutral friend who like me is irish, and she was like "he'll be doing what all irish do on st patrick day and getting pissed tonight" and when i went excuse me what? Please dont be so sterotypical/borderline predjuice (and in the context of the conversation it was implied that just generally irish are piss heads) she started screaming at me and i indeed had to send her link to a thread on here of irish going what the hell is the fuss about getting drunk on paddys its not like that in ireland.

I am sure 20 years ago Chris Evans was drunk on the radio after st Patrick's day. It's hardly a new thing.
